Honourable mention to the 1st generation (1997-2003) Honda Valkyrie. Compared to the Gold Wing on which its engine was based, it had hotter cams and six carburettors rather than the Gold Wings milder cams and twin carbs. The result was what can arguably be called the best custom motorcycle ever made and the very definition of an iron fist in a velvet glove. Another honourable mention to Allen Millyard who turned a four-cylinder Kawasaki Z1 into a six-cylinder Z1.

Probably I am a bit biased as I was actively riding from the late 70's to the present and looking back at these machines I feel I have to say they still command the greatest presence of any motorcycles on the road! What matters more is the gorgeous aesthetics and relatively huge power outputs for the time. They may not be anywhere near as powerful and fast as the present day counterparts but in my eyes win hands down for desire and appeal. The 1970's/80's produced some of the most beautiful machines ever crerated.

That was very interesting. There is a special "something" about six cylinder bikes. Sadly I have never ridden one, though I very nearly bought a Benelli 900 Sei that had a beautiful Tricolori paint job. It had been the Earl's court show model. Hindsight is an exact science. I bloke I went to school with bought a red CBX A when they were launched. We were only seventeen, but he worked for his Dad's haulage firm, so cost was no object. As far as I know, he still owns it.

Ghia didn't work with or for Ford on the 70s... They were owned by them. My wife has a little roadster designed by Ghia before the name became a trim level on Fords.... Nonetheless, a good video full of nostalgia.

Had a test ride on the Z13 (and a Z1 and a 650). The smooth, high torque engine was very impressive and as I had a BMW at the time the shaft drive was not an issue. The best handling and most useful was the 650, the Z1 did not impress (handling was very poor compared to the 650).The Z13 would have been more impressive as a fully equipped sports tourer (I think they made one for the US) than a sports only bike. Do not mention the CBX 1000 to the TT marshals. There was a design issue which caused failures at racing speeds. You did not mention the racing Honda 6 even just for reference.

I bought my 1980 Benelli Sei Mk 2 for £1.2k in 1986, I still have it today. When the stock duplex chain and sprockets wore out and needed replacing, I converted my machine to a 630 simplex chain with sprockets machined to fit, I worked for an engineering company, so it was easy to get the sprockets machined. I replaced the three Dell 'Orto 24mm carbs with six 22mm Dell 'Orto's, one and a half sets from a Benelli 500 Quattro. The Benelli 900 Sei is now becoming a classic for collectors, they are exchanging hands for between £15k to £20k. In the ten years of production there were only 1878 Benelli 900 Sei's manufactured, so they are quite a rare machine.
