Honestly with age and experience it becomes blatantly obvious when someone is faking their intelligence. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves when someone is trying to passively assert they believe they’re smarter than everyone else. Intelligent people want people to understand them so they they turn complex concepts/conversational topics into simple and easy to understand points because they’re able to draw parallels into something else that would be easier for the listener to absorb. Truly intelligent people will make it seem like big things are easy to understand and learn. People who are faking it will intentionally make it more difficult for you to understand or just not make any sense.

I dont think its necessarily "intelligent" people that want to make things simple (assuming we are talking about IQ), i thinks thats more of a trait people attribute to logical/reasonable thinking, if people are genually interested in a subject then they try to explain it in the most simple manner possible not only to someone who doesnt understand the concept/literature but also themselves. The reason I bring this up is because often I find that alot of intelligent people have high egos since everything is so easy for them initially, it can often lead to them overestimating there abilities and once they make it to advanced calculus etc. they finally have to try hard for the first time in there life. I think the "pseudo-intellectual" is alot more to do with people who havent put much effort into learning that subject but play it off as if there experts consistently of on a regualr basis. or in otherwords the dunning-kruger effect, in several subjects.

I'm quite guilty of this. When I was younger, there were some kids in my neighborhood that I *tried* to play with. Sometimes I would and sometimes I wouldn't. I wouldn't because most of them wanted to hang out with the "cooler kids" instead. I was basically back-up for them if the "cool kids" weren't outside. In my own childish way, I was fed up and pretended to be so smart to either impress or bully them. My plan did nothing except maybe make the kids dislike me more. When my parents noticed what I was doing, they told me that my plan was not be the best way to handle the situation and I understood. I regret acting this way because if no one had told me, I would have probably bullied others more.

In my experience, truly intelligent people have a growth mindset - they're always learning and they never take an infallible, rigid stance on anything. They're always open to experience and change, if the change is warranted for the situation at hand. On the other hand, people who want others to think they are intelligent will have a fixed mindset - why should I learn anything else when I know all there is to know? Something I noticed from the video: When I was in middle school, I related to 3/5 of the pseudo intelligence traits described in the video. That's years ago thankfully and I am proud of who I ended up, looking back at how I've outgrown some nasty habits (I used to waste time cringing at my younger self, but not as much anymore since I can be using more of my time to continue healing myself mentally). Back then I bragged that I'm the smartest in my grade level team simply over a teacher noting I had the highest grades (sheesh). I kept showing my grades off to flaunt my braincells (that I lacked thereof since I had a massive amount of naivety and had no knowledge of what intelligence really is other than assuming it means I'm the best at school subjects). That and I actually used to lash out whenever someone says an answer before I get the chance as well as having the wish to remember as much vocab and quotes as I can to be as lexical as possible (my poor memory prevented me from that), though I don't really care much about it now unless I want to make a joke about it, try to understand what someone else says in a conversation, or use it in a story for whatever reason. That's more important than fitting in an encyclopedia along with other famous people quotes in my head so I can randomly say them out loud in meaningless moments to show off. *I realized that although I haven't commented frequently from this channel's videos, when I do, it's mainly comparing myself past vs present or how I currently relate to what's described in videos. It's nice to discover more about myself from watching videos describe traits of some things and how I overcame some of them.

I am a pseudo intellecutal, but I am not because I want to show off, so the signs stated in this video dont really match me, which makes sense because I dont actively want to fake it, but I have interests in topics intelligent people are more likely to be interested in or are more associated with intelligent people. like chess, reading factual books, being quite rational about life decisions, facts before emotions when deciding what to do, wanting to live a optimised life, having really deep conversations about life and the universe ect. Lots of people, regardless of their age, told me that I was smart. And its really annoying because people beginn to think that I am quite smart, but eventually find out that I am not. I dont know how to stop this, since it really hurts seeing them being dissapointed after a while. I mean mabye I subconsciouslly want to let them think that way about me. I dont think so, but who knows. Though that are the interests I also persue when I am alone so that cant totally be it. if anyone has an idea how to fix this, please tell me.

I don't have a solution to fix it, but I think you should try to remember that you are being held up to unreasonable expectations created by social stereotypes and that it's not your fault for being able to meet them. You're being yourself as it is from the sounds of it, but are not being valued adequately for it. You probably are already trying, but continue trying to find people that don't hold you up to those expectations and accept you for who you are. I relate to this comment very much. I think people are quick to put labels on other people esp when they have interests that are intelligent or require some kind of thinking. As someone who used to walk around and pretend to be smarter than everyone else (similar to what you are experiencing but a little different) , I found a lot of freedom in admitting that I don't know a lot. And you never know, you might be smarter than you think. And maybe the weight of other people's expectations is something living inside of you.

You said you don't actively want to fake it. There it is. You may not actively do it but subconsciously you may still be faking this based on societal expectations as Contra said. The perception of what intelligence should be you take an interest in that because intelligence is interesting. However many highly intelligent Eastern intellects don't. They don't play Chess, read factual books or live an optimised life. Their intelligence and wisdom spans centuries though, in their short-lived lives.

Two other signs of a pseudo-intellectual: 1) They judge others' intelligence by social/cultural cues (dress, accent, manners, etc) & 2) They shut down real inquiry rather than ask or answer real questions, with statements like, "Why does anyone care?" or "Why don't you find out instead of flaunting your ignorance?" Real inquiry is the bane of pseudo-intellectuals but the breath of truly intelligent people.

3:00 I've been told I do this one a lot lol I don't really do "small talk" that well -- so asking things like: "What does it REALLY mean to enjoy life?" ...kinda *are* casual, everyday topics that I (and people like myself) enjoy chasing. I don't think those things are "pointless" or "meaningless" because it's meaningful to me. _That might be because I was cursed with an INFJ personality + I'm on the autism spectrum...living proof that God has one sick sense of dark humour._ Honestly, I wish more people would ask highly technical questions and/or philosophically abstract questions. I believe these "pointless" things are *worthy* of our time, energy, and respect...because when we come together to discuss that stuff -- it yields rewards far beyond the questions themselves. Those questions challenge us to think and feel beyond our comfort zones. It's the endlessness of abstract conversations which gives people the intellectual space to grow & share. ☺ _Not every journey is about arriving at a destination._ ☺

⛈ A friend of mine has been hurting another friend this way. They find ways to brag about their intelligence by insulting my friend’s intelligence. Recently, they asked her about a philosophical question. When my friend gave a simple response, they were “disappointed” that it wasn’t a detailed response. They called her “basic.” They didn’t try to expand her answer by asking more about her thoughts on the topic. We both love this friend, even if they have been mildly unpleasant. I’m guessing there’s something more going on with this friend, and both of us want to help them. But the insulting remarks are more hurtful than intelligent. It’s upsetting, to say the least. Currently, the “basic” friend has been making strides to stand up for herself more often. I’m proud of her, and she’s grown a lot as a person. I really hope we can get things to change.

With just the title of the video I started questioning myself immediately. How do I know I am not just a 'smart' ass and using my intelligence just to be dominant over others? How do I know I am a horrible person but being blind to it due to some superiority complex? How do I know I am just stupid and don't actually have a future? (As you can see, I have a great self-esteem.) But after I reviewed myself over every point for literal hours I finally got over it and the main reason I am not calling myself a pseudointellectual is my questioning of my self and my opinion of myself. However, a lot of smaller points that you had said also helped a lot (being open to explaining complex words, for example) so thank you, Psych2Go. The thing is, I can agree with this video in many ways, although there is quite a fine line between what is fake and what is real. Some people may indeed be intelligent but just can't stand people constantly trying to contradict them. I think we should encourage people to still be openly smart and not try to dumb themselves down, but to still be humble about it, rather then tell people to kind of ignore they are smart. This doesn't mean I disagree with this video though. I think these are good points and can be true depending on the person.😌

@@CindyPsych2go I clicked on it because I was genuinely curious, but then after a few seconds I had flashbacks to the last big argument my abuser started with me where he said that I was pretending to be smart (he's a covert cerebral narcissist so he would constantly insult other people's intelligence regardless of who they were) so I guess it was that trigger of that specific memory that made me afraid (๑•﹏•) it was still a really informative video though!

To be honest sometimes I slip into using excessively long words to help detach myself from strong emotions. But sometimes I actually try to avoid using excessively technical language even when it's what occurs to me initially and I know the other person will understand it, just because I want to communicate in a more genuine, less artificial way. For example, in a therapy session last week, "cathexis" was legit the first word that came to my head to describe what I wanted to say...I spent a few seconds looking for a more normal word before giving up, cringing hard, and just going ahead with describing it like that. I was just like...how has this ridiculous bit of poorly translated jargon managed to take over normal language in my head? D:

@@ellebastonart You're likely (and quite factually) undoubtedly intelligent. 😐 Do yourself a favour and take a MBTI test - this will give you an idea of what sort of 'neuro-psychology' (neuropersonality) you ACTUALLY have. And it will likely be an 'intuitive' and intelligent one. Getting hate for being at the top is unfortunately the norm (that is how barely habitable society is; so many narcissits, ESFJ, ESFP/ISFP are allowed to exist and at the expense of the more deserving and neurologically-healthy). Also, INTJ/INFJ experience a lot of hate the most. I think INTP are a close second-but it is important not to give in. I think this is the sole difference between MBTI with the 'J' function, compared to those with the 'P' function. P.S. Intuitively, I'd guess you were an INTP. I'm likely correct on that assessment. 🤔

One of the most comical person in my school happened to be the smartest. They really didn't advertise there intelligence. Frequently had assignments done same day and handed them in one or two days late. They were actually really embarrassed by it. Comedy was there way of seeming normal. However, they had a huge dislike of pseudo-intellectuals. It developed radar.

Refusing to have a conversation because of different opinions and beliefs is a massive red flag for pseudointelectuals. :)
@nikkibee187

Sometimes, I get my words mixed up in conversations, especially if they are very similar sounding or looking words. The thing is, I did know the definitions of those words at one point. I just find myself with more and more brain fog issues as I get older. Sometimes, I forget how to use foreign-origin words (like for food) grammatically correct in their foreign language and so I just use them like people would in whatever language I am using for the conversation. A former classmate went off on me on one of her posts for doing the latter thing. She called me an idiot and laugh reacted my comment and berated me, encouraging her friends to pile up on me. I just shrugged it off, and was like, "Okay. Well, I don't really care. I mean, because it's obvious that you know what I mean, and most people who are speaking our language don't know the language this word is from, so they would only be confused if I used it properly." So then she blocked me. I feel like that person is a really good example of this video. But I'm sure if she were to watch this, she would somehow see me in it too. I have a strong suspicion that she just resents me. I ended up doing a lot more within our study fields, which are related to words and foreign language, than she did so that's why I suspect resentment was the cause of that attempt to cyber-mob me. I am very brain-foggy and exhausted now, so I don't know how coherent this thought will be to others. Just thought of this example that happened to me, where potentially two people would be poised to accuse each other of being pseudointellectuals.

perhaps THE MOST telling sign... people with GENUINE intelligence ABSOLUTELY ARE aware that there can be multiple valid perspectives when considering the same issue. and, though other views may be different or not as efficient/effective at arriving at the same conclusion; perhaps the flavor or color of the alternate route IS WORTHY of consideration REGARDLESS. there ABSOLUTELY CAN BE more than one valid perspective on the same issue. and, ANYone who insists that their way is the only way is ONLY trying to bully others into adopting their perspective before they consider other options and see that there ARE more robust or flavorful options. ABSOLUTELY. FOR SURE.

Glad she is not in my life , pretty much a psychopath, but I’m aware that some ppl are not being like this out of those reasons , Anxiety and others can sometimes awake self doubt and a need to prove yourself to others, and you as well . just be yourself and don’t try to impress others, you don’t need to fake it, what you rlly find interesting and have fun learning, your true abilities will come up when you will be comfortable and confident with yourself, know that You are amazing and smart, don’t doubt yourself.

A lot of people react to my "advanced" vocabulary, but to me the words I use have meaning because they better describe the subject matter; synonyms usually don't mean the exakt same thing, there is usually a better fit with one of them for that particular occassion, but I'm always happy to explain the meaning of all the words I use. Some people even think I come from a highly academic family, but I don't, my parents barely understand me; I'm just autistic and I soak up all the juicy useful words I come across and actually start using them effectively to my advantage in order to communicate as accurately as possible :)
