There are actually three types of edges, hard edges, soft edges, and lost edges. Marco Bucci has done some great videos explaining how to use them to maximize your painting. You have great tips here, because even as an artist that’s been doing this for over 20 years, I still catch myself slipping and forgetting some of the things you mentioned.

how did you change hue and saturation as you paint without an adjustment layer?

"Make your soft edges softer and your hard edges harder" That's a statement that deserves it's own video, if you ask me. I'm a beginner and from what I can tell edges are the biggest aspect of painting that makes the rendering of beginners look all smudgy and ugly. And it's really hard to paint edges well. Especially in something like a face or even worse abdominal muscles.

I completely understand what you're saying. I would say I am a kind of beginner myself. I'm making these videos while learning these skills. Perhaps I'll create a video on edges someday when I have a much better understanding of it.

This is 100% right. I’ve been an artist for over 20 years, and I can tell you that’s one of the hardest things to change, even when you KNOW about hard vs. soft edges, it’s so difficult to stop yourself from making things look too blurry. For me, when I left hard edges in, it always felt unfinished, just like if you have visible brushstrokes in your painting. Over time, I’ve learned that both of those things are not only ok, but they add depth and dimension to your paintings and make them look way better.
