GIRLLL you calmed me down lol. I just got my hair straightened by the Dominicans, and my hair had so much heat damage after i washed it. So much stringy and straight pieces randomly all over. I cried so hard. Ive been natural for 2 years now, and now I feel like it was all for nothing. SIGH!

I had a similar experience after having a Dominican Blow Out. I discovered that they use silicones in their products. This will significantly change your curl pattern and make your hair very dry. After some research, I washed my hair with a sulfate shampoo (Mane 'n Tail) to strip away the silicone. Drenched my hair ( making sure every strand was saturated) in mayonnaise covered with a plastic cap and a thermal cap and left it on overnight (total of 12 hours). Rinse out the mayo the next morning and saw that my curl pattern returned back to its normal state and not as much heat damage as I thought before. Next, I towel dried, sprayed my hair with black tea (makes hair soft and lessens shedding) then I saturated my hair in my deep conditioner (It's a 10) covered with a plastic cap and thermal cap. Left it on for 8 hours. Rinsed. Combed out with Grapeseed oil and warm pure organic coconut oil. Twisted hair in medium size twists, pinned twists and covered hair with a silk wrap scarf. It works. No Big Chop!!

Been natural almost two years, flat ironed my hair once every few months and didn't get any heat Damage. Flat ironed my hair ONE time with a titanium flat iron, hair was straightened to the gawds lol. 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Washed my hair a month later and had two to four inches heat damage ALL over my head. I mean my ends were bone straight with no chance of a curl😭😭😭. My hair was past collar bone length, now it's barely shoulder length. I didn't waste anytime, cut the ends off and back to my protective styles. 😢

I remember freaking out so much when i discovered that I had heat damage. I first thought that to solve the problem was to blow dry it straight so people couldn't see it... I realized that the more heat I used the more damaging my hair got. I learned to just be patient and basically that's all you can do. If your keeping it clean and using protein treatments etc. Your hair will recover!!. I'm still working on my hair and taking care... but it takes time. You gave great advice and gave many hope !!

Hi - I took my hair out of locs n go a dominican blowout a month after. My hair DOES NOT HAVE ANY CURLS what so ever. So now I'm in search of something to give me my curls back. I'm going to try the hydrolyzed wheat protein. I've been using Kenra moisture conditioner bc it has the wheat protein in it for the past two weeks plus used the smelly apogee protein step 2. Hair is still straight. I know it will take some time so I've been doing heartless curly styles. I'm so grateful for my KZitem sistas sharing their experience n knowledge.

Hey Georgine, so it seems like you're taking all the right steps to help your hair recover! You'll see the difference in time honestly, go back to your regular regimen and continue the protein treatments. It took me 2 years to get my hair to look like it does now, unfortunately with this type of damage there is not instant solution. In the meantime, you can use perm rods or flexirods that mimic your curl pattern and achieve similar looks as you did before. That's the only way I made it through, no one really knew how damaged my hair was because I did styles that looked a lot like my natural curl pattern. Sorry this is long as ever lol

(Hopefully you're still answering questions!) But I just got my hair straightened for the first time in like...4 years to get my hair trimmed. Now that I've washed it out: I don't have any broken strands or straightened hair or anything, but I feel like my hair doesn't coil and bounce like it used to. I'm gonna try the protein from Green Beauty Channel, but that's not my issue. I want to know if indirect heat is going to be a danger to my hair at this point. I just bought Curlformers (I'm late as hell, I know!) and I want to at least start the drying process under a hooded dryer, but I can stay away from that if it's gonna make things worse. This answer is honestly open to anyone. Any and all help appreciated!
@curlsunbothered
8 жыл бұрын
I personally use indirect heat every wash day when I deep condition. That type of heat is a lot more gentle on the hair because you aren't actually manipulating the hair plus using heat. For perm rod, flexi rod, or Curlformer styles I still use heat protectant if I'm going to sit under a hooded dryer.

Patience is what I didn't have after my first BC, so I did a second one lol. Did the second one and still got some heat damage, so now I cut half my hair off. Lol...love and hate situation lol...but you are correct. Patience is important. Your new subbie btw. :)

ervina19 see I just couldn't imagine BC'ing at that time. Waiting was my only other option lol. I'm at the point now though where I prefer my curly hair over my straight hair. After a day or two I'm over it lol

I've been doing sew ins for a year and I have grown some inches since then because I'm not obligated to do daily manipulations to my hair. However, I do have to do protein treatments due to my heat trained hair. Thank you for this informative, but fun video.

GLAD i saw your video i went to the salon on Thursday and I'm worrying already i think the stylist use too much heat on my hair now friday coming is my wash day agin and I'm really nervous I was planning if its damage I'm going to cut my armpit length hair and start from scratch i really don't want to so I'm glad i stumbled on your video its frustrating because i use heat like every 5 months i have gone a year with out using heat its so unfair. but thank you for your video.

How many months did it take before you saw your heat damage disappear and curls return?

I started documenting my progress so i would take pictures every month. Because of that I was seeing a difference within the first 6 months. But it wasn't until the 2 year mark when I really saw how much progress I made.

Hello I love your video concerning heat damage and wanted to ask what was the wheat protein you used. It was a quick shot of it and I did not get the name of. My heat damage is mostly in the lower back of my scalp. I did not realize it was heat damaged until I saw your video. I had not flat ironed my hair in years. And I wont anytime soon. Thank you again.

I just big chopped after 2 YEARS and I tried my hardest to apply heat on only special occasions , and I believe that I did. When I was big chopping I noticed that some strands would be curly at the top , then less then one inch of the strand would be straight and then the rest would be curly, AND THEN the relaxed ends . Is that heat damage?

Great video I'm newly natural still in TWA phase but I am so scared to use heat now after seeing all these things on KZitem. I think I'm gonna stay away from heat at all costs maybe for my one year natural I might.

THANK YOU! You know my issue was that I used heat excessively, I forgot all about moderation (silly me). But if you use heat once or twice a year, on a setting that is appropriate for your hair texture you should be fine. I definitely understand the hesitation though because dealing with damage is ROUGH lol

Love this video! currently going through...*deep sigh*...but it's getting there starting to get my curl pattern back a bit. how do you feel about mayonnaise treatments? My mom was telling me that i could try that,which I did, and it helped a little but I'm still not all the way there yet plus she was exposing how it was a good source of protein for the hair. And also love your sweater!! HU is like the college at the top of my list!!!

Curls Unbothered Wow. So yr still working on your getting your curls to turn back? You're hair looks pretty healthy though. Yeah mine is pretty bad too. The damage started pretty much at the root of my hair, and I do not plan on cutting it.

Hello, I have a question. I had not put in my hair in 3 to 4 years. Well I did it and now suffer from heat damage bad. Because I am grey I plan to color the front of my hair in July before having my individuals done. The heat damage was caused last month. I will purchase the product you suggested. Do you have any further suggestions for me? Thanks in advance

First off I wanna say I love your hair! I've been transitioning for a year now and my hair is still in a akward stage. Some hair curls when I wet it or stays mushy but after it dries it's all puffy with stray curls here and there. I had lots of heat damage my hair has improved over the months just not as much as I thought it would. I wanna get a protein treatment to see if that would help but my hair isn't breaking off and I've never had any chemicals in my hair before its actually pretty healthy I don't wanna risk messing it up.
@curlsunbothered

Thank you!! I have the same issues, there are at least two large sections of my hair that look like reverted straight hair versus curly hair (it sucks). My hair never broke up either, but the protein (for me) helped restore my curl pattern. If you have doubts then I wouldn't do it. I do a TON of research before I try anything and make sure I can deal with the consequences no matter the outcome.

I don't use flat irons, I absolutely refuse to. However, I went back to the lady who did my big chop for a trim and rod set - that's all I wanted! She had her assistant, who didn't speak good English, blow my hair out bone straight. The lady was literally blowing out my hair like we were in the Dominican salon because my stylist claims she couldn't trim my hair wet. A week later, I wet my hair and begin picking out my afro when I notice a small patch of straight pieces dangling. I'm highly upset behind this, and will never allow anyone to style my hair again. I'm so lucky that the heat damage isn't as bad as it could have been. To add insult to injury, she overcharged the hell out of me, and I didn't leave the salon until 8 at night even though my appointment was for 1030. Never again!

Hey girl, I've had heat damage for a VERY long time so I was estatic when I came across this video! How often to you do the protein treatments on your hair, I usually do one once a week along with my aphogee protein shampoo. I don't really know if there is a limit for TOO much protein on damaged hair.
@curlsunbothered

Hola!! I'm so happy that the video can be of help to you! I do mine sporadically honestly, I try to do one at least once a month. In the meantime I always deep condition (with a heating cap) and I believe that has helped A LOT! You definitely can have protein overload, some signs is that your hair may be dry or brittle. How is the recovery coming?

Curls Unbothered Slowylyyy every so slowly I think I can see a difference, I haven't straightened my hair in a year and I honestly don't think I will until I'm a couple months in heat damage free. My goal is to have the majority of my hair repaired by the end of this year because currently my hair is like your before picture x2, but hopefully it can be fixed. But, I do think my hair is starting to curl up, so I'm gonna try some of the things in your video and see how they work!

I've had natural hair for a while and I've actually been taking care of it for about 5 years and I got it straightened one time. It was to my tailbone and it was really beautiful but since I've washed it it's been so dry and damaged. It's infuriating but I guess I learned my lesson.
