Tip number 6 Don't make your ride into a suffer fest. Take breaks. That's what I do. Remember, it's not about how far, how fast, where, or even when you go😊. JUST GO!! This is your wake up call 😊

I'm pretty handy around bikes and I thought nothing short of a crash could ruin my ride. Two days ago, my rear derailleur snapped in half. Not the cage, but the derailleur itself, something I've never seen before.

Solo rides are the best especially with nice weather, just yesterday my freehub suddenly couldnt catch and was spinning freely , lucky for me i was just 30 miniutes away from home.

sounds like sticky pawls...have you greased them lately? Sometimes if the grease is too thick this happens and a lighter oil is better??

Zip tie cassette to the spokes and carefully ride back home😊

I try to plan my rides so that the last 50% going back home is with a tailwind. I don't mind the effort on the first part. On a few occasions I also cheated by going against the wind by train and let the tailwind blow me home for like 60km. Can be fun and is just a little moral boost in weeks of heavy winds where I live. 😉

Check tyres after every ride or even after a stop for anything embedded. This will reduce punctures.

That's impressive. I have Conti all weather pros. Very good puncture resistance, hard to get on or off.

I've an old Boardman at my mums, it's still well maintained and in March/April I was using it, washing it (including wheels and tyres) to get salt and dirt off as the winter fades(!)...Then one day it was nice and sunny so at the end put it in the shed...Next time I got it out there appeared to be bird shite on the rear tyre as I looked for the valve pre-ride inflation...Got me reading specs on as it wouldn't scrape off and bloody hell, 4 places it was through to the threads! That was the difference of just one ride!!The last wash it was black all the way around!!!

Many times I've been riding into a head wind. I turn around a go 180* the other way. Still a damn head wind! Serious though, it sucks on a hot hot day with just enough of a tail wind that you're in dead air.

Churches and graveyards usually have free water, if you can drink tap water where you are. In Scandinavia you can drink tap water and it’s actually better than many bottled water being sold.

For long solo rides I will always bring a camelbak bag with 1.5litre reservoir. Plus two bottles on the bike. The extra weight is great for training and when it comes to doing sportives you will be flying it when you have no bag on your back. One other thing I always bring is a roll of insulating tape. It can fix any number of issues. One day the ratchet broke on my cycling shoes. Only for the insulting tape I was calling for a lift. A few wraps around the shoe and it got me home. 😎

I had a saddle fall off once. That was interesting. The bolt binding it to the rails broke. Newer versions of the seatpost used a stouter bolt. A friend's front quick release skewer broke once. That didn't end up well; he went down fairly hard. That's pretty country you're riding in.

I've had my rear derailleur come out on the other side of the wheel in the middle of nowhere.. Took some very delicate force bending it somewhat back so I had a whopping 2 gears I could trust on my way back "home". Whatever happens, don't despair. Eat and drink something and come up with a plan. Luckily it was the last ride of the vacation anyways so I could have it properly fixed in the shop when I got back (new derailleur and hanger and a spoke or two).
