I'm glad that Louise Fletcher turned me on to you. I'm loosening up on my assumptions that abstract artists haven't paid their dues of learning to draw, understand color, composition, and balance.

Many Abstract artists started as Graphic Artists…. They can draw and do know all the elements and principles of art because they are trained this way. Look at Picasso’s work when he was 16…. Abstract expression is more about digging deep into their soul and finding who they are and then slowly excavating this inner self. Creating what they need to say to the world….if we don’t have a “why” then there is always a struggle with “how” to express our story to ourselves and the world.

I'm a complete beginner. Every time I watch a new video, read a new book, or look at a new artist's work, I want to paint like that! I think I'm in [self-taught] art school, trying to soak up everything. So far, just in one medium (watercolor).

Hi Nick! Happy to see you here .....I find it really cool that you pop-up like this to give us a pep talk and guide us through our journey. I enjoy this contact so much and keeps me focused. I like listening to your videos while I’m in my atelier working. You are great company! Thank you for appearing in my life and encouraged me to continue the great journey! Tomorrow...No today is my 68 th birthday. I plan on doing something symbolic with the roll of watercolour paper I’ve been saving. I bought it for my 60th bday and never used it. So this time I promised myself that I would do it this time. An amazing birthday gift from me to me! Happy Birthday to me....Love is all you need ❤️ Lorraine from Quebec Canada

I’ve only just come across this video and omg can I totally relate to this! I have given up on art because my life doesn’t allow me to be free and inspired and life has just drained me but now and again I get fired up again so back I go into KZitem looking at other artists and trying out all these new things hoping to get inspiration and find my way back to art. I need to stop watching and do! I also need to just let go and paint. Thank you for all your advice and sharing your thoughts and methods and ideas on how to move forward when you are just stuck.

Very recognisable - and maybe curiosity is part of creativity - but I must admit that great work is not necessarily dependent on perfect materials - but good material is a pleasure but of course not enough to make good work - I think it all begins with felt life - and then express it in whatever way is meaningfull to you - and I totally agree that it is absolutely important to play and just be into what attracts you.

It is good to hear about the many art interests you have had as I went through the same processes for years. I studied and practiced art in many areas. I did oil painting, acrylic, watercolor, airbrush, glass painting, drawing, sculpture, pastel, ceramics and I thought about encaustic but did not do that. I had a friend who became a professional sculptor and she could not understand why I left sculpture as she loved it so much. I told her I missed working with color. I got to use some of my skills with a book I wrote called "Visions of a Star Traveler." It is about out of the ordinary experiences I had over many years. I did the front cover in oil painting and the back cover in glass painting. Many people told me they liked the art work. I write but I love working with color and I probably always will. You are right experimentation with any medium is very important.

This conversation was really enlightening. I realized now that I need to focus more and not let the distractions of art supplies get to my head. For myself, I think just simplifying and minimizing before moving on to other projects. I've also been to Bali many times, it's the best place to find inner peace and I did bring a sketch book and a small art supply set. Thank you, I'll be watch more.

I really started to re-vist painting last year when in COVID "lockdown" so visiting new places has not been something I can do (not to mention I don't have the $$ to travel to Tahiti!-lol). I kind of have to look to other's work for inspiration at this time. But you're advice on focusing down the subject/technique can open up my depth is what I'm going to keep in mind. I've been doing realist landscape and abstract forms and still life. I have to focus on one of these and explore it more deeply. thank you.

1:22 Wisconsin. Hi there I love the input and suggestions! I find when I'm feeling dry or uncreative that if I do a different type of art form and play ...not being concerned about the outcome I often get re - energized and it fuels my creativity for the main art I'm doing . I also usually really like the "play" piece . Also , when I don't I paint over pieces and then I love the textures coming from underneath and that usually makes way better pieces .
