It’s been a while since I made a “tips” video. To be honest, I’ve probably said similar things in other videos so hopefully it’s not just one big repeat 😂 thanks for watching 🙏✌️

Couldn't agree more. Especially with the first few tips. Less gear, (and smaller gear when possible) and shooting with friends have been the things that have boosted my confidence in the shortest time.

Smaller gear was something I should have mentioned in the less gear part. There’s always a contrast if you see Martin Parr or Harry Gruyeart shooting with their big cameras but clearly it doesn’t bother them. Definitely makes me self conscious haha.

@@TheLiamGordon yeah I still use big stuff at night. It just depends on the photos you want. If people noticing you is what you want in your photos, it's no biggie. But if you're going candid specifically, smaller is always better

Great set of tips! Totally agree with the photo books, been a game changer for me to just sit down and study. Having a physical print to look at has a deeper impact than social media or a website.

Liam, it’s a Scottish thing; we’ve been made to feel that we can’t succeed so we feel ‘inferior’ when we’re not. It’s the ‘too wee, too poor, too stupid’ nonsense that’s been spoon-fed to us. There’s no harm in looking at other peoples work, it’s educational and enjoyable too, plus it gives you ideas that you may not have thought of yourself… I don’t mean copying what others do but it stirs the imagination into action. The only way you’ll find your style is: to get out one take images; good and bad. That’s how you learn and we’re all learning all the time. For me, I’ve gone from using interchangeable lenses to ending up using fixed lens cameras. I use the GRIIIx & the Fujifilm X100v… light and simple and no distractions; 35-40mm.

I often wondered if it’s actually a Scottish thing. I think I sabotage myself all the time with stuff like that. Started to notice it when I moved to the US where the attitude is generally more encouraging. I think when you first see peoples work, flat out copying (or trying to) is ok. It’s a way of adding something from their work to yours. Obviously you don’t make a project and try to say it’s all you. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t try copy Saul Leiter or Alex Webb many times. You’re right though, it’s all educational 🏴

@@davidmccann1276 Raymond Depardon Glasgow book... I've not bought it yet, but I did think it was depressing when I first saw it. Lately, having looked at his Glasgow work through KZitem (there are a few videos of this selection of images) I've changed my mind as it's documenting a part of Glasgow long gone. I found the images much more interesting after that... It's not for everyone so I’d suggest searching on KZitem for the photography in the book too see what you think.

@@davidmccann1276 I'm sure that's not always the attitude but it's at least what I internalized from my youth. Depardon's Glasgow is beautiful and bleak. The dull weather looks wonderful in pictures but I do not miss living in it. Especially in the colder months. Summer is quite nice because of the long days though. Glad you approve of the Lensrentals partnership. I'm quite excited about it. I feel good about promoting their service as I've enjoyed it in the past and they specifically told me that I should tell people if I don't like a piece of gear. :)

Hi Liam. I'm new to your channel but have been shooting street for about 15 years. I started a street photography group here in Atlanta in 2009. I have to say this is really one of the best set of tips! Nice shots too! BTW I still have my GR (original). I found that I really craved the ability to have interchangeable lenses so I started using my Fuji system more. Not having the tiny factor of my GR bothers me but having the benefit of interchangeable (and the Fuji look) is the direction I've been going lately because most of my street shots happen during travel. You've inspired me though to look at the newest GR :).

Thanks, JT. Yeah, it's a wonder how people got by back then haha. I guess being in the big cities around the art community helped a lot. Everything is so accessible these days. I'd like to run some workshops in the future. I don't feel ready yet though. I'd like to attend a couple first :)

It can depend on your personal preference of photographers but I think Magnum Streetwize is a good one as it features lots of little samples from a lot of photographers. I also like any book by Alex Webb. The Suffering of Light is a great starting point. Saul Leiter Early Color is good. If you're looking for more of a how-to book. Think Like a Street Photographer by Matt Stuart or How I Make Photographs by Joel Meyerowitz are great.
