I don’t buy drinks out since 2020, I also don’t drink soda, also don’t hit the vending machines at work. I make my own bread, have chickens for my eggs and recently started a garden in the back yard, last year we had a good harvest or radishes, potatoes, strawberries, carrots, and onions. We have a small back yard, so it’s all container grown.

Limiting meals out is definitely a must for us. It just costs too much to do on a regular basis especially now that groceries have gone up also

Agreed. And once you limit eating out, it’s so much more special when you do eat out.

Congrats on getting off Coke! I did it too. I only drink Crystal Geyser gallon bottled water, out of glasses. I do drink milk. I did my best when I actually wrote out a weekly meal plan, shopped for it and stuck to it. It made it seem so much easier! Now I am older and not alone, so I have it in my head, but that is not as good as pen and paper. We shop at Walmart, which we never did before. Instead of eating out, we use frozen pizza or some canned food, easily prepared. And I try to make meatloaf, casseroles, taco salad enough for two nights, but that is not easy cause he eats so much! LOL I am trying to stay away from processed foods.

I use a filter pitcher for the water I drink and make coffee or cook with. I carry a sealed insulated cup of water and some snacks with me when I'm not home so I reduce eating out when I get hungry. I put a Dove dark chocolate and some Junior mints or a small broken up candy cane into my cup and brew coffee onto it. Then I add Ovaltine for more sweetening, chocolate flavor, vitamins and minerals, and maybe some coconut oil. The dark chocolate helps my brain make the happy chemicals. 🙂 Even if I eat at a restaurant, which is rare, I get the entree only - no appetizers, sides, drinks or desserts. Now if it's a birthday dinner or St. Patrick's Day with friends, I'll get whatever I want. I bring my own water in my sealed cup and I haven't had one restaurant object to it yet. I buy socks, underwear and most shoes new but I start at thrift stores for everything else. I set a spending limit, try on clothes, prioritize what works and buy no more than that limit. I write everything I'd like to buy on a Wish List, on paper at home. Over time as I look at it I realize what's most important or most needed. When I wait to save up or find money in my budget and buy something, it feels really good! Enjoy the free things you've always enjoyed. I started playing board games with friends instead of going out and spending money in restaurants. We did buy some snacks. It was so much fun! Keep a chart of your goals, keep track of your actions and reward yourself for your progress. Even "said no to buying a snack, saved $4" or "added my own toppings to a frozen cheese pizza, saved $14." If you limit your pocket money for spontaneous spending to, let's say, $12 a week, see how much is left the next week. If you have $4 left, add $8 to top it off to $12, but use that $4 not spent to pay down a debt faster. (c) 2024 Lorraine Lamour

I love DIY too. I enjoy pottering around fixing things, though I don't touch electrics or plumbing. I also garden, sew, crochet, can and make my own soap, cleaning products and skincare. I prefer it to buying stuff. My downfall is working in a grocery shop with a lovely deli and bakery. I struggle to resist all that lovely food, especially baked goods.

I make a delicious drink: I buy ginger root (size of my hand) grate it & boil it for 10mins in 1-2litres of boiling water, let it cool, strain it & store it in a glass bottle in the fridge. Then squeeze lemons bought in season/on sale/from friends with a tree & freeze in ice cube trays to store in freezer. In a glass I'll add a splash of the concentrated ginger juice, a lemon cube & a splash of apple cider vinegar with either warm or cold water & add liquid stevia to taste. Delicious & healthy!

This sounds really tasty. How long will the ginger root juice keep in the fridge? Diane

Keeps for several weeks, if it ferments it's still healthy to consume. You could also freeze it in ice cubes once you know how much you like to add (half fill the ice cubes if you don't like it as strong)@@jimmiepatrum

I found a Britta water filter pitcher at a thrift store. This replaced purchasing water. I also buy caffeinated flavored water packets on the cheap.

Order water instead of soda at a restaurant. You save $2 to $3 per person that way!

I have never cared for soda…I grew up in a country that didn’t have it available….lucky for me. I can’t estimate lifetime savings but I bet it’s a lot.

I bought an egg McMuffin and a large diet Coke at McDonald's this morning. It cost $5.85. WHAT??? Way too expensive. I won't be doing that anytime soon. Diane

We have takeout about once a week but I’m now reducing it to every 2 weeks. Restaurant is very rare now. Quit following influencers!!! Saves a ton of money. Buy on sale always. Look up sales to save. I’m even reducing online time as there are ads. Marketplace has a lot of used items still good… example instapots, air fryer etc.

Lemon juice, water and artificial sweeteners make a low carb lemonade

Be wary of the artificial sweeteners though, they are very bad for our health. But natural alternatives like stevia are 0 carb & not detrimental to our health
