That early advice on being dissatisfied with the work has managed to hit me in a recent nerve. In the last half year I binged programming courses to put myself at a competent enough position to be employed in a family business, thinking that in the pandemic age I should take the opportunities that lay at my feet and let go of the idealism a bit. And while I love working with my family in an environment I won't get anywhere else, the work itself is something I have no passion for at all, and something I'm very scared of as I get more and more committed to the job. It may not be a lifelong commitment of course, so I could think of it strategically as a well paying opportunity to afford me things that better suit me later in life, but it's hard to think of spending years in that mindset. Big scary jumps into uncertain waters.

As an artist myself, the part about artists feeling undeserving of being paid hit me hard. Unfortunately, one of the more insidious aspects of modern capitalism is that it has convinced us that labor isn't something to be enjoyed (because if hating your job wasn't so normalized, no one would put up with some of the working conditions many of us have to deal with, let's be real), so if you put time, energy and resources into something that is inherently rewarding (such as expressing your creativity), it doesn't count as "work" and you don't deserve to be compensated for it. It's such a shame. Everyone should be able to find joy in their work, no matter which form it takes, and not feel guilty for benefiting materially from it as well.
@zeppie_

I’m also an artist, and I feel like artists don’t even consider creating artwork labor at all. It’s just moving a pen over a piece of paper or plastic, what’s so laborious about that? Work and labor has always been demonstrated as physical like a fireman or construction worker that they don’t even consider mental labor to be just as important

@@HelpfulVancouverVet I would really love to see a video on it. I adopted a special needs senior cat recently after fostering her for 8 months through a shelter. I went from working closely with our shelter vet, who is wonderful, to needing to find a private practice vet for her. It unexpectedly turned into the most challenging thing about adopting a special needs cat. I was frustrated nearly to the point of tears dealing with her vet last week, and all the while her health is what suffers the most. I want to find a new vet but I feel like trial and error is the only way to figure out the right one for us (almost all of them have rave reviews on Yelp/Google so that's not much help). I think that's an interesting subject. I look forward to Dr. Uri's thoughts on the subject, but one thing that comes to mind for me is to be mindful of the fact that choosing a vet doesn't have to be the same as choosing a primary physician. My current vet is someone who a family member warned me away from because they didn't like her personality or felt she wasn't warm enough with the family member; this person prefers medical professionals that are really easy to talk to and frankly that's not a significant consideration for me in choosing a vet. I ended up staying with that vet because she is clearly gentle and kind with my pets and extremely thorough with their care. She's super professional with me, but the most important aspect was how she behaved with my pets, not how folksy or chatty she is with me personally. Just a personal anecdote!
@HelpfulVancouverVet

@@vickenator That is an excellent point, and one I will surely a address. Thank you so much, Dr Uri! I am in the midst of an unplanned career shift (the result of the pandemic making my previous career paths no longer available), so hearing your introspection is helpful and even reassuring. I especially learned from what you said about working for/with people who share your values. Thank you. Also, as a classical musician (in a time when we can no longer meet to rehearse or perform in groups or for audiences) I greatly appreciate your words about fine and performing artists having to charge for their work. We should, and we must. Too often people might ask musicians (etc) to perform for free because it will be "good exposure." Once we are no longer at the official level of student (and even then perhaps) we shouldn't accept these opportunities. After all, I have been practicing my art and craft for (gulp) fifty years now, and have spent many thousands of dollars on lessons, music, instruments, travel to lessons and master classes, and two graduate degrees in music, to say nothing of the thousands of hours. So, thank you for reiterating this important point. I appreciate your comments encouraging people to teach or mentor others. It is important and very rewarding! I have a hard time to ask for money for my art, but daughter cat and me we send you some purrs as currency. She decided long ago that we should make that purrency should be a world wide exchange legal tender (We lost top shaped sportive Momma Cat trough a sudden illness before she got 15 a few years ago, but I think she would agree too.) DC always gets close to me when she loves someone on the internet and start the helicopter motors giving me hints (paws, headbutts, ear directions) to send some love to whom she thinks should hear her hard enough. She sat trough the NOMV video first and did like MrPirate by my side and got pretty interested/touched. I think she understands more than we can imagine, she learned courage to our very anxious foster cat and we adopted him in the end. So here is for you a gazillion purrs from DC Bank and me! Don't spend it all at the same person XD (I wish we had you as vet but I am on the other side of the country.)

Helphul Vancouver Vet thank you. I love your voice.

You are a beautiful human being and your (com)passion is both inspiring and motivating. I have enjoyed (and learnt from) all your earlier videos. I didnt expect this one but it comes at the perfect time for me to have a gentle reminder of this. I am starting my lifecoaching business myself and these tips are things I know on a rational level but they are, as you say, so hard to actually stick to well enough to actually earn money from it and help as many living beings as we can. It's easy to be swayed if I'm not keeping these things close to mind =). I've written them down, thank you once again for all of it and I love your energy, with or without cats! =)

I really enjoyed this video!! I'm a recent college graduate and a musician and I feel very, very lost sometimes. Sometimes you get to a point where you just want a job in your field and you don't care about which company it is, but this video reminded me to take a step back and make sure the company fits me, too. The things you said, Dr. Uri, about feeling guilty for getting paid for your work is SO true and it hit hard for me. It's really awesome to see a creative with your amount of experience, both in front of the camera and in the vet's office, talking about this. Thanks for the awesome video and looking forward to the next one

Very good vid doc! The point regarding altruism is quite a good one. For me and my two cats they are not just something thats around the house and i have to take care of. They are family and id do all in my power to help them. When i see people who treat pets like things. or scoff at the idea of a checkup appointment or spending money on something that isnt themselves. Its quite a painful revelation and saddens me for all the animals in households that are looked apon as an object or a burden.
