Blade steel doesn't matter because knife people don't use their knives! Except to open the box containing their next knife.

An advantage of a hollow grind, when well executed, is that over the years as you sharpen your knife again and again, the thickness behind the edge stays closer to the original parameters thus allowing your knife to perform better over the years. The flat grind thickness behind the edge gets thicker immediately so as you sharpen (and thus make your blade height shorter) it's hard to keep your knife as slicey as it was originally.

Great video, really like this kinda format, it breaks things up and I think there's a lot of great advice here for all the new knife folks out there. #4 is probably my favorite thing, I absolutely love buying and selling knives and trying everything to see what's out there. Nice job as always!

I agree with most of your points. Except the last one. Maybe it’s because I camp and do more Bushcraft type tasks often and still appreciate a Survival type knife as well as ones geared towards more woodworking tasks. I started in the hobby with fixed blades and moved to folders. I have most the knives you had on the table (never owned a Coldsteel) currently the Arius and Drunken are my personal favorites. Although that clip, I haven’t bent mine yet.

The Bark River Aurora is a fantastic knife for bushcraft and survival. It's not cheap mind you, but way better than the Esee imo. Feather sticking is not the best experience on an Esee 6. Maybe an Esee 4 would be better for that.

Bark river wilderness explorer! Got one custom. California buckeye burl. Gorgeous Jim Stewart custom designed by Robert loveless. And fallkniven is great! But more utilitarian, those Japanese vg10 and cos steels are done perfect by them. Nice and hard. Better leather sheaths than bark river too which is a big deal.

I’ve been wanting a good straight blade. I’m in a humid New England Massachusetts basement apartment. I like the tops tex creek CPM-154 but 1095 steel is $100 less. Looks like a great kitchen knife and when I go camping. May I have your feedback? It’s on HQ

Get a Bark River Fox River in Elmax. It will be a little more expensive but is a good stainless steel with a lot of utility. This the LT version which means it is a thinner blade stock. It will help with the food prep, but will still be a good all around knife. www.dlttrading.com/bark-river-fox-river-ext-1-lt-elmax

Booty blinded? Lol. To be honest, the tops operator 7 has me booty blinded. So far I have been strong but I know one day I will get too drunk. It’s interesting that your view of art is more like tactical. I view something like an eschaton more art. But I think I see what you are saying about looking tactical. Generally I view cold steel as a function over art company. I think they ask more from a knife that is traditionally accepted eg going through car hoods, weight hang etc Actually their function made them get rid of all my fixed knives
@MetalEffort
5 жыл бұрын
The tactical part of cold steel is art not function imo. Just like medfords they are focusing on appealing to some people's imagination more than the reality of how knives are actually used. The design of a knife should service cutting tape, boxes, and food more than car doors, zombies, and back ally fights.

I think you were flawed on your last point with the esee. Now bark river makes great knives but I think you're shortsighted in saying that it isn't a good knife. I think the green is awful and spending money on aftermarket scales was dumb but it isn't a bad knife. It is silly to spend 200 to 300 dollars on a bark river and talk about having to be able to use a ferro rod on it. How many people are really using it as a survival type knife and as though we have to pack so light as to carry a ferro rod and not a lighter. 1095 steel sharpens easily and the esee is a solid knife that you don't have to be afraid to use hard.
@MetalEffort
5 жыл бұрын
I was joking about the esee. I said it wasn't a bad knife, then made the joke. Remember this is my opinion and if I had to do it over, I wouldn't have bought the Esee and instead put that money to the Bark River. You can't really argue with my opinion, but you can disagree with it.
@codys5727

Sorry I guess I missed that part. I think alot of our perceptions on knives come from experience too. I have an esee 5 which is stupid thick and I don't have any practical use for but in a way I'm glad I got to experience it and being able to handle less refined knives helps to develop a yardstick to measure quality. I didn't mean to come off as an ass 😁

You mentioned the green blade wouldn’t produce a spark or wouldn’t work with the flint. Is that the same for Spyderco knives with a black coating?
@MetalEffort
5 жыл бұрын
Yes. A lot of pocket knives have a chamfered blade spine for comfort. Good survival knives have sharper spines so you have use them for flints.
@ChrisJohnson-ht3gx
5 жыл бұрын
Metal Effort so it has nothing to do with the coating on the blade?
@MetalEffort
5 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisJohnson-ht3gx It does along with the sharp edges. I said "Yes" to your question, but I didn't rephrase it back to you. Some people use the knife's cutting edge, but that destroys your edge. The spine is better if it works.

The nice thing about buying on the secondary market especially from knife guys is they take care of their stuff usually and probably own lots of knives so sometimes they are like new still. Also they understand what buyers want to know about condition, centering, action, grinds etc and yes you can save alot of money. I buy some new but alot on the secondary also.
