Cash shops, loot boxes, micro-transactions etc.. The only acceptable monetization when it comes to MMOrpgs is box price+subscription. And when it comes to things in game, daily quests, flying mounts, fast traveling and drops of coins/tokens from bosses to turn in for gear totally ruin a game for me. 1. Encumbered is a great mechanismen in MMOrpgs 2. agree 100% 3. Food and drinks should be in, it's a part of crafting, but with limited feature. 4. Absolutely! 6. Competition is a good thing.

Biased by recent conversations, but I will go with the the company's lack of desire, effort, or ability to provide an equal experience by preventing behaviors such as cheating, botting, and multi-boxing. These all take away from the intended experience and wreck economies. Will it make the list? Bonuses: Micro-transactions (especially p2w), server instability/downtime, dailies (excessive, required amounts), RMT, hunter class in wow (stop taking rogue loot!)

I think there should be punitive things like being encumbered, needing food.. For food i think it should just give you base benefits, but not really nothing overboard like + to stats, etc.. The whole purpose of these things is to add risk and immersion. Not much different than needing a light source (torch, etc) to be able to explore a dungeon without being in complete darkness. The danger on many fronts is what made EQ great.. whether it was limited space, needing food, eyesight limitations, etc. It really needed MORE.. like being subject to weather effects like cold, etc. But i'm hardcore when it comes to immersion.. Most people these days just want things to be too easy or overpowering, which is in the polar opposite direction.

mandatory food/drink in EQ was a left over of tedious DnD mechanic that served no purpose in a pc-game and was only an annoyance. Iventory management can be annoying, but usually only when in games like EQ i forget to check my bags before heading to grind. I do like the fact you brought up how it does add a bit of realism. Food never really bothered me, even in EQ. If you had a caster, most likely they could summon you some, so became an inconvenience, and in FFXIV it is a nice buff often. Overall I dislike microtransactions, but when it comes to games like GW2, I understand the need. If it is an F2P game, the devs need money to run the servers and stuffs. GW2 is also not very in your face about it. It's things like WOW tokens, and Krono that bother me more.

Funny thing about Inventory Management: Runescape made me enjoy it. And I think the main reason is that the game is built around the limited inventory. And you can't buy inventory slots by any means. Now, you can get items that more of a specific item, but they are things you unlock by playing the game and are easy unlocks at that. They're not locked behind a paywall. For example, lets say you wanna carry more Runes that are used to cast spells. There's a Rune Pouch that can carry 3 types of Rune, saving you two Inventory slots. You can get it from 750 slayer points, which are obtained by training the Slayer Skill. If you wanted to speed run it, you can get that after doing about 22 tasks with a specific Slayer Trainer. The tasks are generally quick, and require you to kill X number of monsters. Another group of items are Essence Pouches. They let you carry more Rune Essence, which are used in the Runecrafting Skill. You get these are a fairly common drop from a Monster, and can use them after reaching a specific Runecrafting level. So you can get things that allow you to carry more items, but they're limited to specific items for specific skills, and they are unlocked via game play.

Food and drink - I feel the same about it as I do in any survival type game. If it exists and isn't a constant PITA, then it's good. If it's like in most survival games, where you have to worry about it every 5 minutes, then it's terrible game design. Subnautica is a really interesting example. When you first start that game, it feels like all you are doing is trying to feed yourself constantly. But as you start to progress and build a base, you have a self-sustaining supply of food/water and it sort of fades into the background. I'd say that was a progression system done well.

Daily quests actually make me play games less. You hit that point where you log in and do the dailies and then just log out once your dailies are finished because they are often tedious enough that you are just ready to quit playing when you finish them. After that comes the point where you just can't be bothered to log in at all anymore.

a 6th thing I'd like to add, and it's something that is done mainly by the community of some MMO's and not the Dev's. DPS Parsers/Meters just suck... sort of. I have seen people get refused for raids because they didn't submit a copy of their parse logs to a raid leader. Plus, it kind of adds a dynamic of someone's ego pushing them to play that parse meter to squeeze out that .01% higher DPS than their last one rather than work with their team as a whole.

I've really grown to dislike inventory management (your first example), especially the backpack-with-slots model that you demonstrated with Everquest. At the beginning of the game, not enough slots. At end game, so many slots the UI needs to support filtering and sorting to manage all the inventory. It's especially bad in farming / gathering games like Stardew Valley where 8 of your 36 slots are perma-occupied by various tools that you could leave in storage, but in reality can't. I'm not walking by tree without chopping it down with my axe, right?

I actually wouldn't mind encumbrance and inventory managements systems if the games didn't throw so much crap at you constantly. They are basically loot pinatas like ARPGs. There's so much crap raining down from the dying enemies that it's impossible to manage your inventory without having to break and sell constantly. And games that require different gear sets but make you carry them around in your regular inventory are just plain evil.

My list is probably starts with greed in whatever form that it appears which is usually microtransactions or "create the problem to sell the solution". The grind... I wanna feel immersed in the game... I wanna have purpose and I wanna gain XP thru the things I do meaningfully (questing, exploring, crafting). When I transition from exploration and questing to grinding thru combat for XP that tells me the devs ran out of good ways to keep their community actively progressing thru the environment in the game other than hack and slash. If I get a smooth progression thru a zone/dungeon, with meaningful quests and/or loot that leads me to the next zone/dungeon I consider that a win for that MMO... EQ did it beautifully with the progression thru Upper Guk to Lower Guk and Soluseks Eye and Nagafens Lair. Any mediocre development team can create combat encounters, I wanna know what's around the corner... there's a difference.

Maybe you even gained a level from the experience, and wham. You are attacked by the same creature you just defeated. The mechanic is clear. You have removed a feature from the game that another player wants to utilize, even if none of them are in sight. There are even games that dont wait for the demise of the creature, they spawn in another one while you are still fighting the first, only you are taking longer to do it then the devs thought! Time gated or login gated or daily quest gated FOMO content. WoW and ESO come to mind, ESO is a gnarly culprit. I have enjoyed both games, but the modern drive from both of them to login every day and do certain things just to maximize what I get done before the monthly event is over, or the next update cycle begins and the current content is less worth doing. I miss the days like in the mid 2000s of EQ, DAOC, and SWG (and Classic WOW) where you logged on and focused on what you wanted to do. you didn't HAVE to do anything or do the most current content, everything was relevant and held value if that was what you felt like doing.

I think what ruins MMORPGs the most for me is more about players than the games. MMORPG players these days are all so focused on going as fast as possible to end game. It's all about being the most efficient and nothing else matters. Then they get to end game and complain there is nothing to do and the game sucks. Yet they played hundreds to thousands of hours already. I just don't get that mindset. There is way too much negativity and it's exhausting. It's this way in all MMORPGS not just modern ones. Sometimes I just have to go player single player games to get away from it all.

When newer games have things like weight encumberance, low stack quantities and artificially small inventory/bag sizes that are there to nudge you towards microtransactions or subscriptions, i'm out. Fallout 76 and ESO are 2 heavy offenders here. Another thing is toxic community. I played on the leading Velious-capped EverQuest emulator server for nearly a decade (i'm sure you can guess) and I had to quit because it brought out the absolute worst in me and the people I was playing with. I carried around an unhealthy amount of animosity towards rival guilds and a couple of the staff because the raid culture was so damn toxic. And it made ME toxic and quite insufferable. Years of 3am batphones, petitionquesting, guild spies and raid bans... In the end I had to quit to save my sanity. Now I just play solo and it's so much brighter out there.

EQ's raid culture was like those psychotic FIFA fanatics. Guilds were all fans of rival teams.
