@dennisenglishjournal498
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this brilliant videolesson, Hadar. So, here's the summary: 1:03 IMMERSION - surround yourself with English! Watch TV in English, read English papers, make English-speaking friends online and in real life, SPEAK English. 1:42 METHODOLOGY - break down English, understand every single part of the language separately, focus on certain grammar points/rules/pronunciation items, etc. 2:28 CHALLENGING - take any speaking opportunity, take any part that is challenging! 3:12 PRACTICE - practice regularly, as much as you can. Work hard! Drill words, repeat words, repeat them again and again, record yourself and speak again. Read out loud wherever you are. Learn to enjoy the process, not only the result. *_Fluency comes from practice._* 4:51 COMMUNICATION - talk a lot. Take opportunities to speak with people. Ask questions and gave answers. Connect with people around you, the more the better! 🙂

I've noticed that non-native speakers who have reached this high point of language skills are able to speak even better than natives do.
@abbysands9510
6 жыл бұрын
IKR, I think is because there are aware of their mouth movement, like where to place their tongues, how to open their mouth, etc. Native speakers are not aware it just reflexes. That is why voice coaches are the best people to learn from if you want to lose your accent and not from a native speaker.
@linking932
5 жыл бұрын
@@abbysands9510 Wouldn't that mean you'll not be able to understand natives?
@abbysands9510
5 жыл бұрын
@@linking932 Let me clarify what I mean. Yes, you still be able to understand a native depending on your level of English, the idioms you understand, the speed at which the native talks at. You might even learn new vocabulary, correct grammar, pronunciation and in time, be able to improve in your speaking and written English. But you won't be able to reduce your accent if you have one (if that is your goal ) at least not from a native English speaker. The reason is they don't know the proper tongue placement, the sounds to make, the phonetics, the correct size to open the jaw, linking, word and sentence stress or the intonation. This is because they have been speaking English or whatever language you hope to learn from the native their entire lives and so It becomes a reflex. They mouth just open to the right position and their tongue moves to the right position when they want to produce a word or sentence as well as making the correct sounds. For you to get rid of an accent you need special training from a voice or accent reduction coach. These people are aware of the sounds and how to make them.
@linking932
5 жыл бұрын
abby Sand got you, and yeah you're right, also they don't know the phonetic symbols, I've asked natives about that and they just say: what are you talking about? haha they're not aware of that, they just make the sounds automatically

When it comes to accent reduction the secret is - go to an acting school. This is where they show you how to work on your accent. Then of course you work on it knowing exactly what to do. Not just "work hard" without a clue. Everything else is secondary.

Also when it comes to talk to native speakers i get self conscious and i tend to lower the tone of my voice. last but not least i speak better at night than in the morning when i wake up. how is that even possible? is it just all in my mind? could someone give me a piece of advice? has anyone got through that too?

That happens to me too, maybe the reason that cuz we spent a lot of time practice our speaking skills alone, so we are good, but when it comes to speak with others, face to face and public, we forgot everything and get lost cuz we actully didn't used to speak face to face yet, so we need to speak with ppl more and more. When i speak with someone, the first 3 mins always hard to me, but then I feel comfortable and can speak without any problem. So next time, just keep speaking till you reach the time that you dont find any problem.

You make videos telling us trying to better our accents how to be more confident and not shy, you give advice, tell us how to make sound but you also try to put yourself in our shoes and validate our feelings if we’re insecure or whatnot you don’t just mechanically say ‘do xyz and thats that’ your way of teaching/videos is very personal (ok personal that was the word I was looking for!). I’ve been feeling very depressed about how I sound and you’re one of the people that have helped me get out of my rut and stay positive and continue to try to be better 😄 I don’t think you realize how much you’re doing for so many of us, thank you for all the content you put out and all the hard work that you put in your video is very appreciated

Your diction/pronunciation is perfect. I'm impressed. I wouldn't even know you weren't born here. My two daughters are so good with Italian (thanks to my Italian wife) that people in Italy think they're native Italians.

When I came to the U.S., I considered working on my accent. But, then, I started driving around. From Virginia, I drove down to Texas. Along the way, I stopped in every state. Quickly, I realized that one actually hears 'different sounds' or, accents, when they speak... That's when I gave up the thought of having to work on my accent. :)

Great advices! I noticed myself when I'm surrounded with people of my native language all the time, i tend to forget how to communicate well with english speakers. I'll take your suggestions to practice all the time.
