This may have been mentioned, but I believe the resistance to dress codes is largely a result of airline luggage restrictions and pricing. When we took a Cunard transatlantic, it took a separate bag to carry my gowns and my husband's tuxedo...and I'm a very good packer. (I once did a 10 day cruise, complete including dinner dresses, with carry-on only) Yes, even on land, the dress of people going to nice restaurants and even the opera, has become very casual, and in a port-intensive itinerary, sometimes you're just too tired to dress up. But again, airline restrictions is a huge part of that resistance.

@RandomRandomnessKCMO I agree. My wife and I just got off of a 21 day Caribbean cruise (HAL), and all we had was a small carry-on and a hand held bag each. We wash our shirts, underwear, socks etc., in the sink and don't bring a change of clothes for each day. We saw the guests in the cabin next to us come aboard with two large suitcases each and a hand bag, and they then got off after 10 days. Unbelievable. I know a lady who went for 21 days and brought 13 pairs of dress shoes as she said that she had to match each outfit. LOL.

If they had a contract with Men's Warehouse or something, where you can go get fitted before your cruise and then your tux is waiting for you in your cabin. Dress rental would be nice as well. I like the way the art selected for a cruise ship help sets the ambiance and 'vibe' for the ship. Traditional artwork for a traditional experience, more contemporary art for a more contemporary experience. For me, the art around the ship is part of sets it apart as a brand. To some extent, the dress code is the same. They make sense to me in that they help define the kind of passenger experience each line wants to create. With the spectrum of available options, passengers can choose with thier cruise booking dollars (or Pounds or Euros) what experience they want without depriving others with different preferences.

In terms of dress codes you have to remember that ships originally sailed with different classes of passenger. First class passengers dressed in full evening attire every night. This sometimes gives the false impression to people who have never cruised that they would not like cruising because think they would be required to dress up every night. However second class passengers only dressed up on dedicated nights may be one or two in a fortnight. In modern times formal nights are scheduled by cruise lines at different rates and people can factor this in when choosing an itinerary and cruise line. It is also possible to avoid certain areas of the ship and dress more casually on those nights.

A number of years ago I went on Celebrity cruise with a friend. He had quite a bit to drink and wanted to go to the art gallery, where this very slick “beautiful“ couple were the art dealers. He got completely suckered in and spent tens of thousands of dollars on that trip. Not only then, but in subsequent cruises and another special by invitation only events in Miami hotels, they have suckered him into buying more so-called art. They know how to press your buttons and make you feel “special.“ He now has so much “arts“ that he has it in storage units. I didn’t think one needed to be an art historian or connoisseur to come to the conclusion that most of the pieces were tacky junk.

Art is the closest you’ll get to experiencing reality through another person’s eyes. You either like art or you don’t and it seems you don’t. I remember most of the paintings in the rooms I’ve stayed in and they relax me. I notice and appreciate art wherever I go. The only thing I mostly don’t like is when a painting is modern art and it’s just a sheet of black paper or some other colour. That doesn’t make sense to me but it might to others.

My Uncle buys a lot of artwork to use in his office (I guess it can be a business expense - but he gets some for home too). Cruise lines give him a free week cruise all expenses paid, just in hopes that he'll buy a piece while on board. Art is good for them because there's no limit on price (especially if done on auction and there's a bidding war), you pay what you think it's worth, so it's not like, hey this bottle of whiskey is only 100$, I know what the price is and won't pay more.

Not in my cabin, per se, but certainly I remember the art in the public spaces, starting with whatever magnificence is in the central atrium. Places like the cruise office where you would go with a problem, had particularly distracting but soothing artwork to diffuse whatever problem I was there for. I know that Holland America has a European, old masters style, whereas Princess was more of a Hollywood glitz and glamour. Princess Majestic had Asian art throughout, from photos on the wall to decor in the specialty restaurants. (Majestic usually cruises in southeast Asia from Australia). Otherwise you have dull, bilious walls like the only Carnival cruise I went on. Never again!

While I applaud Tips For Travellers for bringing us valuable and entertaining news about the world of cruising, I think this idea of setting up various aspects of shipboard life as either "good" or "bad," "useless" or "essential," etc., is too controversial, as Gary even mentions in this video when he explains the system of waste-water handling. It is indeed an interesting topic, but I'd prefer a video that reveals what is happening behind "that door" in a matter-of-fact way, not trying to turn it into an emotional choice which passengers might vote for or against. My take: if you want to dress up, go for it -- but don't make everyone else miserable because they don't come up to your exacting and exalted standards (you can probably tell that I am not a huge fan of the whole jacket-and-tie thing). BTW, the dress code called for no ripped or shredded clothes or swimwear in the dining rooms (and I never saw any) and formal wear on formal nights only required in the main dining rooms.

Out last cruise had naked ladies in the artwork and it was on repeat all down the narrow hallways to the cabins on every floor I happened to go on. It was too much and uncomfortable 😳. We just kept trying to divert our eyes. It’s one thing to have it on it’s own inconspicuously but I don’t recommend it as THE decorating theme. After paying for plane tickets (I live in Hawaii!), pre and post cruise lodging and any excursions I might want to try…I’d be broke before even stepping on the ship! My first cruise was to Alaska on Holland America (to me, it was quite dressy), I think Mom and I only dined in the main dining room one time and I felt terribly under dressed! I would think that keeping a dress code that allows the choice of formality would be nice, perhaps a section in the main dining room for more casual attire! You have to admit dining in the main room is preferable to the buffet! 🌺

I've purchased from Park West several times on cruise ships and each time I feel I got a great price. My wife has a fine art degree and is a teacher so I go by her judgement for value. Some pieces we bought were simply because we liked them, and they tend to be unknown artists and we get very cheap prices. We've bought some as cheap as $50 up to $4500 I paid for a Max (now worth $11k easily). On top of that it's fun for her to see all the piece and watch some of the bidding on higher end pieces. Here's a hint: if you like a piece and are willing to take a chance on missing out on it, wait until close to the end of the cruise and go see the art sales rep privately and make them an offer. They need to move as many pieces as possible and they are typically willing to make a deal on unsold pieces.

This guy seems pretty sophisticated, it's amazing he doesn't get it about the art. As a related example: my band used to play the 3 hours before a Bucs game within the entry courtyard, from when they first opened the gates until the kickoff (we would quit when the jets flew over). There were 12 bands scattered from the gates to the lounges to the parking lots. I often thought, not one person coming to the game comes to see the bands, most people walked right past and didn't even acknowledge us. I was talking to our agent about this, "why do they bother?" Because, she said, it adds to the ambiance, to the feeling the place is live and a happening place to be, it keeps people moving by adding animation and dynamics to the stadium in a way piped in music would not. I understand completely why they have expensive art on the ships: it adds to the sense of luxury, of exclusiveness, of high-end vacation experience. Really, I'm amazed he doesn't get that.

Well, there are two things I would offer an opinion on, and they are a bit related: 1) Onboard decor (not the art available for purchase, just the regular decor): I think that most people who say that they don't even notice the artwork on a ship, in a hotel, at someone's home, etc. do still pick up a general ambience, and the artwork is a part of creating it, even if only perceived at an almost subliminal level. If you paid to go on vacation and found yourself on a cargo ship with exposed pipes, all one color of paint just to protect the surfaces from the salt air, and no decoration, I don't think you'd feel very pampered, at least if you're like most people. You may not remember whether the sculpture by the buffet was a horse or an elephant or some nonrepresentational glob, but if it weren't there, you'd probably come away feeling like you had been in a school cafeteria. I believe the artwork is one of the many details that passengers have the luxury of not noticing because someone else has worked hard to take care of it. 2) Dress codes: Like the artwork, I can understand how it creates an ambience, even if only at a subliminal level. However, the difference is that the artist is being paid. The passenger has paid to be there. It is one thing to say that YOU like to dress up. Hey, it's your vacation, you paid to be there, I think you should have the right to dress up if that makes the event feel special to you. It's very different when someone says they want EVERYONE ELSE to dress up. Those other people paid to be there, just as you did; you didn't pay them to create an ambience for you. I can see why what seems to have developed is a compromise, where different lines have a different basic minimum standard, in order to avoid people dressing in a way that is not just them minding their own business on their own vacation but an assault on everyone's ambience. I don't know if there's a nudist cruise line, but I would suggest that people who don't want to dress at all should have to go on that one, not expect everybody to be fine with their lack of dress on all the other cruise lines. Does that sound fair?

I absolutely notice the art work. Carnival Liberty and Carnival Freedom has creepy art work. Very bold and red with lots of naked ladies. I feel like I am at the Outlook Hotel from the Shinning. The Carnival Elation has very soothing tropical art work. I picked my next cruise ,the Carnival Mardi Gras based on it's soothing blue theme and I picked a Havana Cabin because of it's tropical Cuban Decore. That's my home for 7 days or more. The artwork matters.

In the same way I would wear something nice (not just jeans and tee-shirt) when going out to a show or a nice restaurant, I would have no problem dressing up for a nice night out on the cruise. But I don't see the point of it going to a buffet dining room or a deck-side party on board. In the way you're paying a lot for a special night out, you're paying a lot for special nights onboard, therefore, dress up. As for art, I don't know if I go for galleries or sales on ships but the best art is part of the decor and has to blend in. While you might not notice or care what the painting on the wall is in your cabin, you'd really notice if it wasn't there or was completely wrong for the room. There must be a fine skill of finding the right pieces for every area. I applaud that even if I might not particularly care for one piece or another.

We sailed on Royal Caribbean last year and we dressed up for dinner which we enjoy. There was a sign posted no shorts or tank tops but it was not enforced. We saw it every night. Personally I get aggravated and wish people knew how to dress. I’ll be glad when the slovenly look goes away.

I tend to notice certain pieces of art. For example an oriental suit of armor on my last HAL cruise. I never noticed the art in the cabins assuming they are just cheap prints like a hotel room. I never ever participate in the art auctions.

The art in the room, looks like a New England Fall scene, which is just odd.

If you want beautiful art, take a trip to Santa Fe, NM. It's not all southwest, western, or Native American art. Plus, you get to visit a very special area that most people aren't familiar with.

I do notice the art and feel it does add to the atmosphere but I do not care for the art that is for sale on board and am puzzled as to how that ever became “a thing” on cruise ships. As to formal attire, I will “dress up” but personally hate dressing formal

The cruise lines and their contractors make BIG $€£¥ on over priced art at auctions. That is how it became a thing.

I do notice the art. I do not usually find the art in the room memorable, but throughout the ship it can be. The art throughout the staircases on Celebrity is sometimes interesting. And I find some of the art for auction lovely, but I would never buy art at sea!

What makes no sense to me is that there is a dress code, but no way to iron or steam your clothes. People travel from far away to be on a cruise, so chances are that all your clothes are wrinkled. I tried the shower hack several times, which is to leave your dress near the steam in the bathroom while taking a shower, doesn't work. Took a steamer once with me, it got confiscated immediately when boarding. The ships also don't have any irons onboard for guests. I understand it's a fire hazard. But to look your best then becomes a challenge.

As for the art auctions, my parents used to buy a lot of art on ships at auction. Most of it seemed a bit garish to me, and apparently I wasn't alone because at their estate sale, NOT ONE piece of artwork sold, even though they reduced the prices by half at noon. That art-auction space onboard ship would be better used for something else.

Pro tip, art never moves at estate sales. It just doesn't, and people sometimes aren't honest about what you really have. So it might not sell, and they pick it up for $20 . Wind up selling it for much more. If you think you have anything of value, you get it appraised, and have to a true professional sell it in a gallery or at a true art auction. The items your parent bought weren't a waste. They had fun. They purchased items they liked. It reminded them of their special memories they had together. That's okay. Some people blow that much with other vices.

It makes no sense to have some people in formal evening attire in a dining room with others in trainers and shorts. So, it’s all or nothing in terms of ‘telling’ people, as far as I can see.

I learned from Cruising With Wheels that one clogged toilet affects all other toilets in what they call your “Toilet Neighborhood,” which is a specific but limited number of toilets. One alone never gets clogged. How would you like that job, huh?

Art is Life. Without art, we live in a bland world. @Dave Pratt said it beautifully. I very much enjoy being in the art classes on Oceania Riviera and Oceania Marina. We have no art auctions, but the artwork is absolutely beautiful on Oceania, and it definitely adds to the experience onboard. As for dress codes, I say dress with class if you are on a classy ship. We don’t look at, nor care, what other people do. I wear a nice dress and my husband wears a suit and tie every single night on the ship. Restaurants like Toscana, Jacques, Polo, even the Grand Dining Room are so beautiful, and I wouldn’t go to a fine dining establishment underdressed in a city or town, so why would we NOT dress up for dinner on a FINE cruise ship with beautiful dining venues? As for the casual restaurants, then fine. Go casual. But it makes sense to dress in the evening. Oceania calls it Country Club Casual. I call it: Whatever YOUR country club is, and our Clubs are in Palm Beach. I’ve taken some flack over the 20 cruises I’ve been on on Oceania (plus the world cruises on Regent, but there most people DO dress), but I ignore the comments and stares, and notice that after the second evening, the women start dressing. It takes no more effort to bring lightweight but beautiful dresses. They actually weigh less than jeans and casual clothing. My husband appreciates it, and I appreciate him making the effort to look handsome for me, too. On nights when we’re exhausted from daytime exploring in the Mediterranean, we might change from jeans and a shirt, to pants and a blouse. But shorts - never. They are inappropriate on a beautiful ship, except for during the day on the pool deck.

The vacuum toilet system is important for the ship. As you said, it saves water and reduces the amount of sewage that needs treatment to a manageable amount. Not flushing anything except human waste and toilet paper should be part of everyone's education on land and on sea. It also protects the environment and the ship. Using gallons of water to flush toilet is what makes no sense.

Comments: Art Auction - have never understood why you would buy art on a cruise ship - waste of money, I agree. Dress code: like you said the various lines are known by their dress codes and people know that before choosing the cruise - so no griping allowed, in my opinion! At least formal dress, to me is better than an “all white” party - firstly I can choose from many colors and styles for formal night where I, personally look washed out in white and then I`ve bought something for a cruise that I will wear once and never again!

British love to dress up. When I was in England, I would constantly joke about how men would have a morning tie, a tea tie, an evening tie and a sleeping tie. Here in Florida we are almost always dressed down.

Some of those artists are sometimes on board - i was on a cruise with my parents when i was 18 and a man introduced himself to me when i was having a look around the gallery and pointed out a couple of paintings he said was his - they were pretty awsome - he said he was trying to take his art in another direction and was looking for a model and asked if i would be interested - i thought it would be cool so agreed - of course i didnt realise i would have to get naked but after a bit of persuasion and the offer of 50 dollars i let him draw me in the nude - never saw him again strangly enough but ive always wondered if there is a painting of me hanging in a gallery somewhere - doubt it would fetch much lol - of course i never told my parents , they probably wouldnt have allowed me - and 50 dollars was quite a lot of to a lad back then with so much to spend your money on onboard

I don’t notice the art on a ship. I never go to the art auctions. The sewage could be got rid off in port, obviously the port needs to agree. I don’t eat in the dining room as I don’t like the dress code and like a more casual meal. I’ll only go on cruises I can feel relaxed.
