I face palmed at the 6th season of History Channel's Vikings, specifically with the Rus. 1. The Rus warriors look like some kind of highly fictionalized fantasy-inspired Turkic or Mongolic nomads in their attire, while their urban culture is depicted as something out of the 15th or 16th century, or 600-700 years after concurrent events. 2. The Rus converted to Christianity at least a full century before the actual historic conversion of the Varangian and Slavic upper elite within the domains of Kiev, while the Slavic commoners remained pagan for additional two or three centuries. 3. Kievan Rus invades Scandinavia. It never happened and it makes no sense. There is a good reason no great continental power had ever tried to conquer land (at least until WWII) in Scandinavia - it has no strategic or logistic value.

A few additional points: About shields being made of naked planks with no cover: This would not even be rare, it would be unheard of. Modern tests have been done against reproduction shields of the correct thickness and types of wood. Without a glued-on covering of linen, leather or hide, the wood splits almost instantly on impact from arrows or spear points. With covering, it never splits and it significantly less ens penetration depth. Shields would always have been covered. About weapons: While it is true, that spears most likely were the most commonly used weapon, we really shouldn't forget about the one-handed battle axe. It was particularly common amongst Scandinavians, and several contemporary depictions of vikings show them armed almost exclusively with axes, so even at the time they were associated with that weapon. The axe appears to have been just as much of a status weapon as the sword. They were often richly decorated and feature in portraits of jarls and kings. An example is the axe of King Olaf The Fat (AKA the Catholic Saint Olaf) which he named "Hel" and which became his saintly symbol. The axe was inherited and used in war by King Magnus The Good, who even used it as a propaganda tool. The axe was definitely a weapon of status and not just a cheaper alternative to the sword.
@einzelfeuer_2855

Against shields and mail I'd prefer an axe or spear to a sword honestly.
@Finkeren
4 жыл бұрын
@@einzelfeuer_2855 while an axe does deliver more impact, it really isn't particularly effective against maille, particularly not the very thin-bladed bearded axes and Daneaxes, which are really no better than swords in defeating maille. Some of the more narrow-bladed and more wedge-shaped axes of the period - the ones where you cannot really tell if it's a tool or a weapon - might punch through maille, if swung with a lot of force at the right angle, but even then it is by no means a guarantee. A hefty spear is a much better bet in that case. What makes axes a pretty good weapon of war is the fact, that it can deliver a debilitating wound both through impact and through cutting - ideally both, but one is usually enough. This, combined with its usefulness as a hook makes it a slightly awkward but very versatile weapon up close.
@einzelfeuer_2855
4 жыл бұрын
@@Finkeren True but while they may not penetrate mail they (as you somewhat said) can impact it hard enough to cause rather serious bruising wounds. A bearded axe or even just a hand axe is a better backup weapon than a sword is but a spear is always the primary choice for anyone that isn't an archer (or rather it should be anyway).
@Finkeren
4 жыл бұрын
@@einzelfeuer_2855 An axe is only a good weapon when combined with a shield (though in this case that's hardly an issue) This is by no means something that there is consensus about amongst historians and archaeologists, but I honestly think, that some warriors, particularly in Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages did prefer one handed battle axes over spears as a battlefield weapon, and that this might be one of the reasons, why they were so feared and viewed as especially ferocious in combat. Let me explain: For one thing, "vikings" are depicted in contemporary art using axes in combat often enough, that this must have been a thing. Axes are a particularly effective "shock-and-awe" weapon. An aggressive opponent pressing in close with an axe is gonna be hella scary to any spearman, who is used to and comfortable with fighting at a distance. I think it is entirely possible, that some Scandinavian war bands would use the tactic of quickly closing with the enemy, throw 1 or 2 javelins each (easy to carry into battle, when you don't also carry a spear) and then rush in, using their very large shields to get inside the range of the opposing spears and attack with their axes. It is a tactic not entirely dissimilar to that of the Roman legions of the late republic/early empire: Move in close, throw javelins, move in under cover of a large shield, quickly engage in hand-to-hand combat with a devastating short weapon. We have no detailed accounts describing, what it was actually like fighting Scandinavian warriors at this time, so we might never know, but I think this tactic fits well with the high status of the axe among the Scandinavian warrior class, their reputation for ferocity and fearlessness in battle and the fact, that vikings famously beat much larger armies in battle very quickly on a number of occasions (and might also explain why at other times they were utterly slaughtered to a man - this would have been a risky tactic, if the enemy didn't break right away)
@einzelfeuer_2855
4 жыл бұрын
@@Finkeren There are supposedly accounts of danish axes being used to fell horses and shieldwalls not unlike a legionary unit were common to most armies at the time. If those are both assumed then I would think that they were probably so feared because of a fighting style not too dissimilar to later medieval periods where the main body played defense with shield and spear while others stepped in and out of formation with two handed axes or axes and shields to opportunistically break open enemy shield walls (berserkers or whatever skirmishing like this would mirror the role of halberdiers in pike formations later on to be more specific.) If I'm right then these relatively advanced tactics would be absolutely devastating to a typical shieldwall or spear formation.

A couple of points on weapons and shield. the Norwegian Gulathing law stated that at weapons muster, the warrior had to have a spear, a sidearm (sword and axe were seen as roughly equal) and a shield, which had to be strengthened by at least three iron bands across it, nailed to the shield with iron seams. Any weapon missing from this meant that the warrior was fined three öre, which at the time was about 80 grams (about three ounces) of silver.

When you talked about cleanliness you did not mention the sauna. It uses less fuel than heating a bath tub full of water. Heat a small room, wash with soap and a small bucket of water, then roll around in the snow so the melt water rinses off the soap. The sudden temperature shock causes fleas and lice to drop off. I am not sure if it works with ticks. Fleas have to remain attached 24 hours to spread plague, so if you sauna everyday you avoid plague from fleas. I got this from an old logger who said he prefered to share a cabin with Scandinavians because "they didn't have no fleas". He logged in Minnesota in 1898 to 1904.

Excellent vlog. A minor point or two. The ax would be one-handed unless the shield was lost. A wooden boss would be a nice alternative for a poor freeman, carved stump-wood can be very protective but also a heavier. Naturally, a metal boss would replace the inferior wood once the raider was successful. Wooden bosses were undoubtedly the first design of the single grip shield, before metals were more widely available. That's what I think.

As for the weapons, I also read that the reason we often picture them with axes is that they couldn't afford other weapons, beign farmers/sons of farmers. They would instead use their wood cutting axes, wich they generally already had lying around. This is only regarding the raiders. I guess proper armies had the finance to afford spears for their man. Plus the tactical advantage of a spear vs an axe.

When it comes to the uniformity of shields in movies and tv, I'd say that it's just faster and cheaper for the prop department to mass produce a bunch of shields that look exactly the same rather than taking the time to make a bunch of shields that look different.

@Metatron from the bronze age to Viking age north European pagans sacrificed swords for their gods in wells and rivers. The last 400 years before the Viking raids: gothic mercenaries fighting for Rome bringing back tons of silver. The soil of Öland and Gotland are full of it. You will have hard time to find a place where you find more "solidi". 1000 years after the Viking raids:"No one could afford a sword!"

All valid points, Metatron. But here's one very frequent mistake I have to say you've left out, which apparently a lot of people are posting in the comments below me: The tendency to use the term "Vikings" to describe a race of people. This is not correct at all because the term "Viking" means "sea-raider" or "pirate". So it is not a term for a race of people, but it's actually a JOB title. One of the very few times I've heard the term used in this correct way (to describe a profession/job) is in the series "The Last Kingdom".

What did you expect, that they go ahead and take a bath as soon as they finish fighting? Why don’t you show what they’re portrayed like in their everyday life, they look pretty clean there.

When a Norse Earl, decided to go raiding.... He called the þing, the assembly. Here all matters political and legal were resolved. Here he declared his intent and asked his subject to support him. If he was a popular man, people were eager. When people stood the chance of being lost at sea or die on foreign shores, they took care to make every issue public and official. Even wills and pledges of runestones were made, should someone not return. If he succeeded to rally enough support throughout the winter, he raised his Leidang with ease. The Leidang were the economic and military force behind his Earldom. He and his leidang were also pledged to whatever King he was aligned with. So sometimes raiding took the backseat to the interests of the king. His Leidang consisted of the free men, the Housecarls of his fief. They all pledged men and ships to the enterprise. Outfitting a raiding party had many facets and was expensive. The Housecarls were the farmers, traders, hunters, artisans and builders, all free men. The Housecarls had swore oaths of loyalty to the earl, for protection from other earls and roving niðingar (outlaws). A raid was a possibility to earn more wealth, slaves and honor among peers. So the men were eager to go. The workload on farmers became especially tough in summer, as they also had to grow crops in the raiding season. The extended family along with the thralls was called upon to handle the harvest. A man with enough thralls, had it easier. Some farms even merged when the men were away. Anyone in the Leidang was obliged to house the King, or his men when they travelled, through fealty to their Earl, and was expected to provide both lodging and food for them. A potential dread for poorer farmers. Many kings took advantage of the raiding season to visit farms, and check up on his subjects, the crops and tax collection. Many bastards were born to the King's men, as they helped themselves to the women. The Earl also had his professional household guards, the Hird. Berserkers were usually found among the Hirdmen. They were the most feared fighters of the viking society, and had lethal prowess, and even supernatural strength and abilities according to the saga's. His men-at-arms, the hird, were his most trusted and experienced people and assisted in the logistical and practical organization of a raid or war assembly. They were also his tacticians and most able troops. The Hirdmen were pledged to the Earl by either belonging to the king, by monetary contracts, by blood oaths or family obligations. Some wealthy men, if they had many sons, would often pledge their youngest to the Hird, before they could even lift a sword, in order to raise the status of their family. The Hird also lead the Fylking. The Fylking was the smaller tactical units of an overall raiding force. The king or Earl also had other allies and pledged housecarls in other communities, and the raids tended to draw in people in from far and wide. To have large groups of men assembled came with considerable costs. And problems. People needed to be lodged, fed and shown the courtesy of their stature, with gifting, in order to secure and renew new and old pledges. Many young maid fell victim to the charms of raiders who fathered children they would never see or hear of, if they died on a raid. These children would then be sent with their mothers, to live with the family of the father. Most weapons was personal but many special agreements were made to get people to join in. There was always some farmer that needed convincing. Compensations might include livestock. Some might not have the health to raid no more, so they sent younger relatives to honor agreements. Women and children and old people stayed home with the thralls to take care of the farms and animals. Some thralls were brought on raids, usually females, for companionship. Only a Jarl or Hersir (a Chieftain) was forwarded such privileges.

There is an easy explanation for all that. As a nordic spy once told the metatron, their favorite food was pizza, i mean, look at their shields, it is obvious! Because there was no pizza in Scandinavia they went viking! As they "searched" in Poland , England and France they finally realized when they were in Sicily that pizza was not invented yet. That made them miserable, whey wore gray clothes and stopped washing them more and more. And all the other stuff that doesn t make sence, i mean why using armor, if there is no pizza??? Maybe in Valhalla there is! And you know it you are not yourself without having pizza. Same counts for the norseman ;).

Likely most professional warriors ("hird") in service of a jarl or king, would be provided with armour and weapons by their ruler, and so might be wearing chainmail, a high-quality shield, etc, even though they personally might not be able to afford it. Also, one thing that gets overlooked, which I see way too often e.g. in "Vikings" and even in AC:Valhalla, are the hairstyles. Especially in "Vikings", they are way too modern. Shaved heads probably weren't _that_ common although it did happen, undercuts were mostly only worn by the really poor... Some braiding of beards and even hair was done, even by males.

A couple of criticisms. You say that iron rims are more common in archaeological evidence, but this is not the case. Shields are more often found with no rim whatsoever, which may look like an impartial piece of evidence but it is actually evidence for organic rims. In fact, I'm not sure where you get that idea from in the first place. There are very few shield finds with metal rims found. AFAIK only one of the Gokstad shields can be interpreted as that and even then the iron banding is inside the perimeter of the shield. There are a number of other shields from Gokstad, Trelleborg, Tira, and Oseberg that suggest the existence of organic rims being more common. The current theory is that shields with metal banding were primarily ceremonial. Also, I would avoid using pictures from "the vikings" as examples for round shields. Most of the material culture in the show is horrifically wrong, and their shields by and large are well off, especially the ones you showed. If you are looking at them for bad examples, then you could also show good examples.

I felt tall when I visited the UK, and I'm just above average for a Swede. I imagine the difference was not insignificant back then either. Especially because vikings (not all Norsemen) were also warriors, and it's more common for large (tall) people to become successful warriors than small (short) ones. So the Franks and the English would encounter Norsemen who were on the tall side even when compared to their own countrymen. Even today, you'll find that the average infantryman is taller and larger than the average civilian. Big boys are just more likely to become soldiers for various reasons - and even more likely to succeed in that role. After WWI, surviving soldiers were 3.33cm taller than fallen soldiers on average. Might seem like a bit of a tangent, but I want to emphasize the correlation between height and odds for survival in war and battle, as I think tall vikings might have been partly the result of shorter men simply not surviving as long. Meaning, not only are warriors taller to begin with, but the longer a party is at war, the taller their warriors will be on average. So a band of veteran warriors would likely tower over the average peasant and priest, for example.
