I got hired by the department I currently work for because of appearance. It was narrowed down to me and another person. They showed up to the panel interview with a polo shirt and jeans and shirt not tucked in. The one I beat out had more experience but how I presented myself made the difference.

As someone who’s going through the process, DO NOT 1. Lie 2. Cheat 3. Steal Being a LEO is about integrity at its base, if you lie cheat or steal, your foundation of integrity has been demolished and you will definitely not be a choice candidate. Be honest. It’s better to be honest about an F up than lie and get caught. It shows you’ve matured despite making a mistake previously.

@@ansonwu24 you will have to take a polygraph, so lying is not a good idea. I know people who have admitted to doing things like smoking pot and shoplifting but as long as there is a decent bit of time between now and then (a few years), you might be forgiven. If they catch you lying, it's a pretty much instant disqualifier no matter how you try to explain it. Police work is all about integrity. They are having you walk around with a gun all day in stressful situations and you cant even tell the truth before you start they cant trust you. So just tell the truth and show that you have learned from your mistakes, that's your best bet.

Then I started the academy but with only a high school degree. Listen to him. A bachelor degree will really help you jump quickly on ranks if you have ambition and want to be someone in life. Lucky for me (I don't know about other countries) but the police academy in my country also has a university where you can have the chance of becoming an Officer with an important rank. I am 40 years old, and I want to be a police officer.... Yeah it took me a LONG time to decide that, huh? lol..... I'm not quite sure what to do actually. I'm very lost, and I need some advice lol... I have a clean record, I've never been arrested in my life. I'm still in fairly decent shape and my health is pretty good, it could be better but I'm working on that. I want to work on a career path that allows me to advance in the field of investigating domestic terrorism, hate crimes, and other violent incidents like mass killings. I know those are very specific and grim topics, but that type of work is what I am most passionate about pursuing, because those types of crimes I feel are the ones that America should take priority in solving right now. I feel like my skills and talents could help bring justice to people who need it most. But I am lost. I don't have much confidence in myself to follow through and go for it... I want to start a new life, but I don't know how.

I've been thinking about policing especially since I grew up with my dad being one and know many of his friends who are police officers-it's always seemed like an interesting career to me. I'm currently doing a chemistry degree and considering a forensic science one, which if I did become a police officer, could allow me to work with forensics (in Canada forensic scientists are police officers-aside from the RCMP). However, I have a hearing loss which I imagine would immediately disqualify me-even though I grew up wearing hearing aids and have always excelled in English courses-and people I know either forgetting that I have the hearing loss or not even realizing unless if they see my hearing aids. I know that the police department that I want to work for has regulations on uncorrected vision and hearing, but they also have regulations on CORRECTED vision, so I don't see why they wouldn't consider corrected hearing-but I could be wrong.

Education options... Even during the law enforcement career... 1. Consider a junior college or community college. Why pay for the first two years of a four year college/university at that rate; when one can pay considerably less? 2. Online schools. From the most difficult such as MIT (yes that MIT) to ones such as Biola and countless others. MIT can be free, or at a very trivial cost, such as getting books and/or cost to print transcript. Just a few classes from a school such as MIT guarantees one a lifetime career; the employer will come to you instead of the other way around. 3. Consider items such as computer certification.

I'm doing my initial research to determine "Do I want to be a cop, or is it just a nice idea that's not really for me?" Questions: What's the difference between a cop and a sheriff's deputy? What's the difference in hiring and qualifications? Does my military service actually help, or is it useless? Sure, police are (I'm guessing) something like a paramilitary (hope that's the right term) organization so, I'm familiar with rank structure, discipline, rules, regulations, and bullshit. However, what I'm wondering is really: Hey, I was a diesel mechanic in the Army. Does that count for anything? Does that hold any water? If one job opening is available, and there's 2 candidates, me and an identical candidate who has zero military experience but is identical to me in every other way, who gets hired?
@minutemanproductions8029
4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the department, no two are the same. Generally speaking a 4 year military contract is just as good as a bachelor's degree. The military guys that don't get in are usually special operations guys, if you were a diesel mechanic and not in combat then your military experience is definitely a big advantage for most departments. The disadvantage of a military background is that the police department has to retrain you for their policies

A sheriffs deputy and a police officer are pretty much the same thing depending on where you are sometimes the sheriffs department have you working at a jail and if a city needs some help the deputy’s will patrol that area also the sheriffs deputy can help out in many towns or cities within their jurisdiction. But if I’m not mistaken some towns don’t have police officers they have just a sheriffs deputies. From what I’ve heard it’s easier to become a deputy

I want to start preparing to apply to my local agency and I am terrified lol I have a fairly clean record; light drug usage but I haven’t touched anything in at least ten years. No felonies convicted or not. Haven’t had a ticket in over 12 years. I’m a CCW holder so the government trusts me enough to carry a concealed weapon. It’s still scary though. A few family members have DUIs so I’m hoping that doesn’t hurt me.

I got tips 1, 2, 4, and 5 down but I definitely need to work at being physically fit. I’m not bad or super out of shape but definitely not up to Police standards. The thought that I can spend the next several months or year to improve myself in that category sounds pretty thrilling, plus it’ll really let me know if the police field is something I really want to get into.

Start with a 37 min jog everyday. When I went through basic training for the US military the people who worked hard before attempting were the top performers. Don’t wait until it’s time to go. Get started now. Push ups sit ups run. Easy money. Focus on your endurance core and stamina duration.

This is a great video and really good advice. For the appearance pretty much any one that has served in the military, as myself US Army, knows what you're talking about. I do have a question about something that you didn't mention. How about someone that has a low credit score or bad credit? I did some financial mistakes when I was younger and my credit is not perfect, will that disqualify me or slow down my process?

Physically fitness is something that not all department that do count on! why i'm saying that since there are allot of cops on the street that are overweight So many t]of them that are just so big to the point that how can they run LOL

Empire24453 I think after a while they really don’t care. Everyone has been telling me you have to be fit to be a police officer. I think you just have to be fit just to get in. Because you’re right I’ve seen police officer who can’t even run or anything. So I think after a while when you’re set in stone on being a police officer everything that has to do with your body is up to you. Like some people said you don’t chase people 24/7.

On the job, meals get lazy and small. REAL lazy and small. Hence why Donuts and Coffee are such a stereotype for cops xD Sometimes fast food places will give cops free meals out of free security. Least that's what I hear from Officer401 LOL

I’m 6’3 250 and I’m in grade 12. I have a purple belt in jiu jitsu and have been wrestling in high school for 2 years. I also do muay tai and kickboxing. I’m pretty quick, but I just wanted to know if pull ups are something you need to do? cause I’ve always sucked at them. Another thing, I have quite a bit of tattoos, what’s the rules with them? If there are any

Look at the police department you are considering to apply to for their fitness requirements. Since you are in grade 12, do some post-secondary education first either at a college or university. If after the education you still want to be an officer go for it. Avoid police foundations (or similar programs) as it will not help and is unnecessary. For a program choose something you are interested and can fall back on. Continue with your jiu-jitsu to show you can achieve goals.

freaker I’m 17 and currently looking into the military and law enforcement, but I have a breaking and entering felony that has been expunged off my record. A police officer and military recruits told me that it doesn’t disqualify me. If you were caught stealing which probably is a misdemeanor, you will be fine especially if you were a minor.

I have a question, I went to take my live screen fingerprints for California Corrections. I'm going, to be honest with you, and would like some advice. In 2013, I applied for a cleaning agency, that agency cleaned the sheriff's buildings. Even though I did not apply through the sheriff's agency, they to took my fingerprints to work there. The problem was that I forgot to mention it on my PHS form, do you think they will find out? They fired me from that job because I wasn't working the way they want me to, but it was 7 years ago.

I’m 19 and I work as a correctional officer at a county jail. I started working there 7 months ago and have been doing well so far. I am getting to know some of the county and city police officers but I was wondering if there was anything else I could do to try and help my chances of being hired as a police officer when I turn 21. I’ve been listening to scanners at work and getting used to dealing with out of control individuals and dealing with legal cases etc. Any advice ?
