Hi there, I have a soon to be 5, 3, and 1 year olds and my husband wants me to homeschool and I'm feeling very overwhelmed at the thought. I am a stay at home mom but I don't want if they go into public school that their not behind and I'm a Christian mom and have dyslexia and autism myself and don't want to mess up my kids. What is the best curriculum you suggest that covers every like language arts, math, science, art, music, PE, or curriculum that helps teach on computer some things? Please help...

All great tips, Megan! I especially like your point about realistic expectations--it all comes down to knowing ourselves, knowing our kids and the lives we lead here in our real word. One strategy our family made a lot of use out of was siblings taking over homeschool tasks--bigger siblings teaching little ones their math lessons, or playing phonics games, or doing flashcards, or giving spelling tests to each other. Of course this requires investing a lot into good sibling relationships, because when sibling relationships are strained, it won't go well. The side benefit is that often older siblings ended up learning more or finally 'clicking' with a certain concept when they had to explain it and practice it with littler ones.

This was great, thanks so much!! Ha, oh my yes - little ones can be so surprising. Today, my little one put cat food all over the floor, then went to the fridge and literally started drinking A1 sauce. . . Why? 😂 It was exciting.

This was all so spot on! We switched from Saxon to CLE and it has been a sanity saver for us. My kids and I both enjoyed saxon, and it works wonderfully, however it took us literally hours a day to get through everyone's math. I'm expecting my 5th baby next month and we really needed the extra time and energy that CLE has given us back

What LA curriculum do you use for a 5th grader to foster independence?

My oldest used Fix-it Grammar at that age along with IEW structure and style video writing course. He also read assigned books and did summaries or designed poster boards about what he read about.

I have 7 kids ages 14 down to 8 months. When I found out I was expecting our 7th baby I switched to Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) which is designed for students to work independently. By the time my baby was was born I had my 4 oldest (14, 12, 11, and 9) all working independently. All I was doing was working with my kindergartener while the baby napped then checking all the older kids work in my pockets of spare time. Now the baby is 8 months old and everything is getting easier which is good because she’s down to only 2 naps a day!

I’m excited to try CLE Language Arts 4 this coming year to help my daughter be more independent with it. That’s what she wants. Great tips! Next year we’ll have a toddler and baby so we’re looking to keep things simple. ❤
