Tip Number 1b: Do not expect everything you do to be masterpiece. It is better to write 10 pieces, 9 of which are rubbish and only one is good, than to not write at all.

Great tips. Thanks, Sarah. What works for me, too, is creating physical movement (i.e. long walks, short jogs, etc.). A mental block is like stagnant, still water. It eventually draws flies and looses its freshness. A moving or rushing stream of water is another story. So whenever I feel creatively blocked, I get my body in gear and move. It tends to get my stuck brain moving as well. ^_^

Great ideas. Very relevant to me (and probably most of us) who find it very hard to create something that really works. Either it's impossible to finish, or when you leave it and come back it sounds stupid, or the verse is killer but you can't find a chorus or... Will definitely try these ideas. Thank you Sarah!

Tip number 3 hit me hard. In my department at work I have worked by myself for the majority of this last year. Yesterday they gave me two new people to train, and I realized that despite having my job down to a science, I am not good at teaching others to do my job. But as the day progressed I found that I enjoyed having some help and I actually had an alright day.

That is some great advice sarah!! One thing that I usually do for singer songwriter stuff is basically try to write while I am watching TV or you tube videos about stuff. Sometimes I can get into a zone of your not paying attention to the fact that your even trying to write something new or are playing at all. Then something comes up and I will think. Cool I will run with that.

I completely agree with playing a new instrument. A year ago, I wasn't enjoying playing any more and felt I had reached the edge of what I could accomplish on guitar. As a result, I became really disillusioned with music for the first time in my life. Then I picked up the old bass that had been sitting in the corner for years. What a change! All the fun of music came back, and I found myself exploring new styles and hearing things in a way I never had before. Every once in a while, you need to hit refresh, lol.

You hinted at the need for consistency. Brad Isaac said this about the method Jerry Seinfeld used in his career as a comedian and writer: "He said the way to be a better comic was to create better jokes and the way to create better jokes was to write every day. He told me to get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker. He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day. “After a few days you'll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job is to not break the chain."

Cool tips :) my tip for avoiding writer's block is to spend some time playing 'bad' music on purpose, like, making up munted chords and playing bad sounding riffs, so that I don't have any restrictions, and then by chance I will make something nice, just by accident, amidst all of the chaos haha

I was to say, take a long walk and just breath, just walk and breath and forget about everything. Just..forget it. Walk! Same time try to remember, if you really feel it (not wanted, but naturally), the sense that ''something good is in the way'' ... you know how it feels :) To trigger this mood, is key for put yourself to work. Sometimes the feeling won't come to you, but the long walk will make your body feel better, maybe feel hungry? Then eat something you love, then sleep better, and a fresh brain is what you need to be creative again. In my case, I need to remember ''hey Veronica you are valuable, take care of yourself, love yourself, eat well, sleep (SLEEEEEP), check if your guitars are in tune (yes they are, but do something! xD ), check again and see if you grab a pick and end recording something? who knows?'' ... that kind of ''how to parenting yourself'' thoughts 😄 Thank you for this reminder!

Great video Sarah! I know this isn't strictly related to writers block but I really like playing the songs from the Yousician weekly challenge. Everyone likely has an opinion on how effective the tool is for learning the guitar, but there's something to be said for just trying whatever the weekly challenge songs are (usually 2) irrespective of whether they are in your preferred genre / style.

Sarah, thank you so much for tips! It is just in time :) I avoided collabs because of having some issues in communicating - I easily get in touch with one person, but not with the band and I tried to make it playing with different people in different genres (there was a time when I played some pop-bard songs in a band contained of 7 musicians). One of the moments I came across is the question of trust. It took a long time for me to realise that I hadn't really trust my intuition, other people, and situations we were into. I had a strong fear of doing something wrong. But I came up with one thing - there's nothing to do wrong.

@JackMuskrat

I actually try not to worry about anything when I force myself to write. I don’t think about how it’ll sound, or what the end result will be, I just get something out without thinking too much and go from there 👍🙂 if it sucks, try again tomorrow, if it’s got potential, try and re-shape it till you like it 😁

It's great to write something on your own but it's easier if you're talented like you and/or know the theory (scales...) You should make a guitar camp with other youtubers, like Mattias IA Eklundh does every year in Sweden.
@SarahLongfield
4 жыл бұрын
meshug gagah Thanks for the kind words, but I actually don’t know any theory or scales or anything😅 Songwriting is something I’ve always struggled with, but after writing hundreds of songs at this point (despite only releasing like 10 percent of them) it’s gotten a bit easier, so really it’s just a matter of training your brain to get used to creating :) like anything, the more you practice it the easier it’ll become! I’d love to do a guitar camp someday, but not knowing anything about theory might mean I’m not qualified 😅
@meshuggagah4118
4 жыл бұрын
Unconsciously you know some scales because you play songs from bands which use scales. I don't know anything either but I'm not able to write a 4 fingers tapping. It seems so natural and easy for you, do you have a perfect ear? You're too modest. You can teach "how to write hundreds of songs without knowing anything" in a guitar camp... and much more. You can also teach Steevie T how to overcome his anxiety.

Hey, I feel like back when I unsubbed from a lot of channels you hinted me to go back to Toby Hendy's channel. I sub to channels I want to get notification of. So I still like you, just saying. ;) I don't think I'm having writer's block, I think I'm just too often alone and I feel like I should be communicating with people and making music in a private setting, instead. But I can't find people who want the same. I've been sending a lot of messages around, but I feel everybody became a zombie to social media. it's hard. It really is, you need a tribe. and preferably a tribe with people who are just a little older and more experienced than you to make it work well, but here I go, I can't even find *a* music buddy, so let's cancel having any sort of demand like that at all. I feel like I'm musically stuck because I find it incredibly hard to just motivate myself, or come up with something out of nothing

I can't tell how many times this happened. I think that most than lazyness, is the fear that in the end, ''oh it isn't that good at all'' feeling. Perfectionism is not your friend. That's how I lost thousands of ideas, good or bad, these were ideas that could've been recorded, and ended in a song. We have smartphones and can sing a melody at fly, or whistling, no excuses, it's our low self esteem that vanishes our inspiration.
