While this may be a loose style, your precision in placement of each brushstroke comes from your years of experience and artist’s eye. I’m watching thinking “Surely he’s done now…..wait, surely now…oh that looks better…how did he know to do that?!” I love your demos. They’re a meditative experience watching creation take shape. Hi Paul. Peter from Noosa Australia. Great demo. There is nothing like the feeling of loose watercolour, that is once you get used to it. You are soo right in your tips. By the way, just found you so I guess I have some catching up to do. P.S. Paul I hope that some may read this comment, because I am going to tell all that not many artists on utube give of their knowledge and love of giving so generously. You sir are one. Your videos are the best part of Wednesday! (Well after God of course. 🥰🙏🏻) I’m very grateful that God put a desire in you to paint and to share it with others. Awesome video...the best way I've found (by accident doing urban sketching via Ian Fennelly technique)...to loosen up...is to use HOT press paper and just putting paint on the paper outside the lines and just letting it flow. I know people think hot press is associated with detailed paintings...but I've found just the opposite when using the hot press. I find the paint floats on the surface instead of being absorbed ...so you actually have less control and therefore it looks loose. The first time I tried HP paper it was like "I can't work with this crap"...that's because I was used to being in total control that cold press and rough gave me. Try hot press and you will see that having less control will automatically happen Since switching my paintings now have "character" and not that polished look.

I've always been afraid of HOT press, I'm not sure why... I think I feel like you really have to be good to make a painting look good on hot press. But what you said made me think again, I think I need to try hot press! Thank you for the inspiration!! 🤩

I wish I could appreciate this style but honestly it just looks gosh I don’t know too simple. I love they way talented artists can use a few strokes and entice the viewer into understanding all that is left out but I can’t. Those trees look so u.n.-tree like. They look like blobs of color to me. But you Paul and make anything look lovely so I’ll keep trying to see things your way.

The tutorials from the Inspiration Series are my favourites...new artists to appreciate and new styles to attempt. Would you consider including Andrew Wyeth in your series? He's an American painter from the New England states and while much of his later work is in tempura, his earlier work and his 'studies' are in watercolour and many of them are lovely, even haunting. I just read "Andrew Wyeth:Memory and Magic" which was a delight to read and a feast for the eyes. Many thanks, as always, for your helpful and inspiring tutorials.

At 11:58 you quickly made a perfectly straight line. That's not easy. Usually when I try to do that it isn't very straight. I want to try this loose and fast technique but it usually doesn't turn out the way I want. Is this paper flat on the table?

Great rendition of Wesson style of loose watercolour. The demonstration was quick and direct without fuss or bother. I hope I can glean some of these wonderful tips and advice. Thank you so much.

Really enjoyed this, I am struggling with loose techniques and have started the same painting half a dozen times. This has reminded me of so much I need to apply. Here goes the next and final attempt 👍
