1, keep only 10 fonts to use in projects 2, use only one typeface on project, if really really need then add too 3, put white space to typeface too 4, use same font size weight for similar items like menu related items. In order to repeat more 5, change one parameter at a time, like size,color,tracking etc

I liked your observation about the link between sizes in a landscape and a layout. I always looked at newspaper articles as the absolute standard, meaning "Title > Subtitle > Text > Footnotes" But ultimately, variation in sizes is another type of gradient and it creates depth of field that makes your designs more interesting to look at.

Thanks for the tips, although I would've slightly disagree with repetition being used to create something safe. I think it's better to think of repetition as using it to create a cohesive piece of work that doesn't ruin the rhythm and flow of something if it were to be designed well 😀

@hellobont

Obada Qawwas yeah, I understand. That’s because the typeface might look good only in big or small sizes, but not along the scale. That’s one of the reasons why I think it’s better to use only excellent typefaces, they work in any scale, have variants for big sizes and body copy sizes, and a lot more benefits. Thanks for the comment!

Great video! Can you share your thoughts on how to choose best version of a typeface? For example, Vignelli's list of typefaces, where can I buy the best versions of this typefaces?
@hellobont
6 жыл бұрын
Alexandr Volkov hmmm good question. Some of the typographies are system fonts, so no need to buy them. There’s people at MediaMonks that handle that kind of stuff, so I wouldn’t be the person to ask. But any well known service like myfonts should work pretty much the same I assume 🤔 I will see if I can ask and give you a better answer 😅

What do you think of the font Proxima Nova? I like it more for web and I like Helvetica for print
@hellobont
5 жыл бұрын
There's nothing to discuss when it comes to tastes, that's totally personal. If you want my opinion, I think it's a very good typeface, but it's not a replacement of Helvetica because it has a big x-height, so it doesn't work well enough for Display sizes, while Helvetica works super well across any size. So if I would use it, I would add a Display typeface in the mix. hope this helps!

What about the Google fonts? For work all I am using are those because it is better for the developers (they say). I am wondering if you use typefaces from Google fonts?
@hellobont

For developers it should be the same using Google Fonts or any font you provide. I use Gooogle Fonts sometimes, yes. Specially when the client’s branding uses Google fonts. Not a fan of most, but there are some good ones that have also been improved a lot since the time I did this video :)

I'm kind of torn on the one typeface rule. I understand it for ultimate simplicity and unity w/ a design, but I think using two separate typefaces can introduce variety and visual differentiation (perhaps if you were trying to convey emphasis with your titles and have body copy be distinct.)

Doesn't using the same typeface make all your works similar and boring?

Bont Co Yes, that does make sense. But for example, no matter how many ever ways I try to present Comic Sans, I'm sure everyone will still hate it irrespective of the way it's used.

Would be good to add that since two years ago when I did this video til now, I’ve started using more expressive typefaces for display sizes. I think that’s where you can sometimes go a bit nuts to find something more appropriate for the brand, and still use the classic typefaces for body copy and other smaller sizes.
@merisimamovic965
3 жыл бұрын
It's okay, but you also use more than 10 definitely. Everyone does.
@hellobont

Sure. It’s not about the number, but the principle really. The idea is to avoid using a new typeface for each project, but to get to know a few and use them well. And when you are starting out, you might find handy to have a list of recommended typefaces to help you sift through the sea of typefaces out there.
