Stinger works decent with a sowing needle to thread the line through the back as well with the nostril jig, just takes longer to set up, nice too because pikes don't usually short strike me so you can still use a wire leader still but floro line on the stringer, seems to keep the action decent and keeps em alive

I fish for bucket mouths most of the time and my proffered live bait are 3 to 4" bluegills. I rig them just behind the head through the skin, I never pierce the spine, I use 2/0 bass hooks. I attach a 2 to 3" float, add no weight, set near weedline. I let the gill swim 8" to 1 foot below, catches them everytime.

I go through the mouth out the gill twist and hook lightly again through the back by the dorsal fin… I don’t hurt the minnow very much doing that and it stays on in pretty good. I also use a stinger hook and let it just hang.

Yeah. I understand that. I wouldn’t recommend it if it wasn’t going to last. I’ve had mine for going on 8 years now and it’s bounced across miles of ice all winter as well as been in my boat all summer and has held up through all of that abuse. I’m not sponsored by them or anything. I just have been very impressed with the durability of it. It’s definitely an investment though!

Great video!! Which method do you suggest for jigging walleyes during the spring river run? I fish the Wolf, Wisconsin and Rock Rivers here in Wisconsin.
@calebwistad
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! In the spring there is usually a bit more current and dirtier water. You can get away with a little less action on the minnow in those conditions. I’d use the behind the head method to keep my minnow on a bit longer but still have some good tail kick. If it’s super snaggy I might go all the way through the back.

I have been hooking minnows in the back the way he says is wrong. When the fish ate feeding aggressively I have balled them up on the hook and gotten bites. When they are finicky, you need to paint black dots on the minnows forehead.

What about using frozen minnows?
@calebwistad

Frozen minnows will work if you hook them good. They are definitely mushier than fresh. Definitely not the best choice but they do the job.

@@calebwistad I hear ya but several areas do not allow live minnows and by 2027 they will not be allowed in some Canadaian provinces due to hitchhiking evasive species larvae in the water.

I get using live bait, but these ways kill them so fast, with the exception of going through the tail. So it is better to simply buy dead bait
@calebwistad
4 ай бұрын
That would be a concern if this was a live bait rig, but with a jig you are imparting most of the action with your rod so the bait’s liveliness is less important. Fresh dead is always better than frozen when it comes to bait as well.
@pocketjokers1
4 ай бұрын
Your #1 lip mouth is most definitely not the way to hook a minnow it will die very fast with your method ! You only hook the minnow thru the top lip so the moth can stay open and get water / oxygen flow thru mouth and over gills , minnows will live much longer on the hook.
@calebwistad
4 ай бұрын
That is true if you plan on using the minnow for a long time, say under a slip bobber, but when I’m jigging, the minnow rarely stays on the hook long enough to kill it, and even if it does I’m still giving the minnow most of the action with my rod anyway. At least that’s how I see it!
