The thing to remind people is that stainless steel soaps are odor eaters and NOT for getting rid of bacteria. They work by transferring the smell of the metal to your body. Rubbing your hands on any stainless steel thing, even your metal sink will do the same thing. Just don't replace your regular soap with it.

Just FYI..."metal" has no smell. The smell comes from the oils in your skin reacting with the metal. Specific, very pungent compounds are created when your oils react with various metals. This is generally not the case with certain stainless steel alloys with a high chromium content, so at best stainless steel can be neutral. Whether stainless steel can actually remove certain odorous compounds or not is iffy. There is genuine research into that question and results have been about 50/50. The actual chemistry involved doesn't really support the idea that it can remove all smells, but it does support the idea it can remove sulfur-containing compounds (such as in onions and garlic) and there is enough anecdotal evidence to support testing it. The general idea is that the chromium oxide on the surface of some stainless steels will react with the sulfur compounds in things like garlic and onions in a way that it is easily washed away by water instead of locked up in oils on your skin. The whole point of using soap when you wash your hands is to strip these oils away which contain odor causing compounds, other oils, and microbes. While a stainless "soap" will not necessarily do much for removing skin oils like real soaps do, it reacts with sulfur compounds (and perhaps other compounds) and draws them out so water, the real cleaning agent in life, can just wash it all away. Also, while stainless steel will not "kill" bacteria and viruses per se, it will not accumulate them either, and if you are handling garlic or onions, those happen to be anti-microbial themselves (when fresh). The stinky stuff might offend you, but it's hell on bacteria and viruses.

It's a misunderstanding. It's not so much that they're made of plastic. Since straws are smaller, they end up in the oceans much easier than cups.
