the kera-kera onna (lit. "giggling woman") originates from a chinese legend. it reports that prince xiao tong (520 AD) was actually and literally stalked by a woman. her stalking and giggling was reportedly so annoying and creepy, that half of the city and the palace would complain about her. desperate, the prince had the lady executed. too bad that her ghost would soon return for even more stalking... funfact: the story is based on historical documents and real peoples.

"fun" fact. The Great fire of Meireki, that destroyed 60-70% of Tokyo and killed over 100.000 people in 1657, started with the burning of an allegedly cursed kimono (The kimono was said of having been owned in succession by three teenage girls who all died before even being able to wear it) in one of the temples of the city.

The kosode no te yokai sounds similar to Hmong superstitions about clothing that formerly belonged to someone who has passed away. The way you describe kejōrō somehow give me flashbacks of some descriptions of Nordic malevolent water spirit, ”Näkki/Näcken”. In some regions this creature is described as beautiful woman from behind as she is washing herself at shore of a lake or river. This appearence is a lure, since the face is described to be horrible. This creature then snatches her prey who has come close enough enchanted by the view and eaten in bottom of the lake/river.

@jamessan3404

Well, only thing I really agree here is that they were often victims of violence and that clients should be even more ashamed. Certainly I won't agree with modern day glorification of becoming sex workers - and it had enough effects to make some women in my middle of nowhere country fly out to Dubai to do dubious deals, I can only imagine scale in more cosmopolitan society. It's just not that good way for society to function (unless we just make all relationships into transaction and figure out alternatives for children and non sexual intimacy, but I don't think it's quite natural for us)

It has to do with the unique social structure of feudal Japan, while most other countries had an absolute monarch, Japan's emperor is a figurehead and the real power lies in the Shogun. Absolute monarchies like China and Korea nearby suppress folklore about Yokai and monsters as it promotes superstitions and undermines the power of the Imperial family. Japan doesn't have that and the Shogun like the power of the emperor being undermined (weak emperor = stronger Shogun) so they don't suppress folklore stories
