The way this scene was done was perfect with the sound fading out to and the focus blurring when he finds out he has cancer. Also the song they chose when he looks out the window is perfect, and the fact that they shoot it from outside is also beautiful.

Pretty sure this doctor is the prime example of what not to do when breaking bad news - barely looks at the patient or acknowledge their presence, uses medical jargon they can't follow, isn't empathetic.

@@willsnally At the time I wrote that, I was preparing for interviews to get into medical schools, and one of the stations they put you in is a role play where you have to deliver bad news to a patient. All this stuff was on my mind a lot and it came through when I watched that. (In case you’re wondering, I didn’t get into any of them, but I didn’t meet the grades and interviews are nigh impossible to pass for autistic folks however hard you try to mask.)

I once had a CT tech ask me if I had started chemo yet. I sat up on the CT table and said, "I HAVE CANCER?!!" and she backed out of the room and stammered, "Uh... that's not for me to say. Ask your doctor." I drove from the CT place an hour away to work only to collapse at my desk from the nausea of the barium. I was told to go home but I was too nauseous to drive an hour home, so I tried to sleep in my car but I couldn't cuz my landlord called to yell at me about my roommate moving out. I told him I was having a hard day due to receiving difficult medical news and he goes, "I'm sorry you're sick, but that's not my problem," and continued his rant. The doctor did not tell me for several days that I did NOT have cancer.

My mom had bilateral bypass surgery and the next day at 7 am the GI doc comes in and just says I reviewed your X-ray and you have a mass on your pancreas. I said like a tumor and he goes yeah. I said cancer? He goes I don’t know and left

I remember when my doctor told he I had a spinal cord tumor. It was just like this scene. Except my doctor is a woman and she's great. I just went numb and everything just faded into the background.

This movie blew me away when it first came on direct tv-I myself just prior got diagnosis of a tumor(oddly a rare gene mutation also)&many other depresing issues in my spine&one very serious-guess everyone gets that numb,tingling,buzz in the ears sensation when told something they don't wanna believe-I have since only leaked out this info to a few people in my life(keeping it to myself)cause I was brought up to be independant&strong!-this movie really hit home for me&was very well researched for accurate situation(s)-very good movie&should've gotten more&better reveiws than it did.

What a horrible, impersonal doctor. He might as well be a robot. I especially hate it when doctors explain your diagnosis using medical jargon. Like, dude, you know I didn't go to med school.

This has been used more than once when a character learns that he or she has cancer, like in Breaking Bad. I've never gotten cancer, so is the shock of learning that you have cancer like this? Where it's like you can't hear anything?
@analiapastrana1593

In my experience I can tell you it wasn't quite like this but similar in some ways. After I learned I had cancer (breast cancer) I got out to the street and as I watched people walking by, smiling or talking to each other, everything lost sense to me, for a couple of minutes, things I used to be worried about before the diagnosis that day, simply seemed vain to me. I felt like "this is it. It's all over", first thing that came to my mind. 2 months later, I can tell you I have my ups and downs but mostly I feel positive and ready to fight this battle. I have long months of treatment ahead before surgery but I know everything's gonna be alright. Don't know how, but I know it. 🙂
