This is why I rock with 50! I was actually in college taking Business Law in 2006 when he partnered with Vitaminwater. I was a label geek until I majored in Fashion Merchandising. I was crushed when I found out about markups, and how the “NAME” is actually what consumers pay for. Now it’s even worse, because consumers have become so wasteful following trends. Which then causes prices to rise on items that aren’t in “high” demand, or get discontinued even if the same customers have been loyal for years. For instance, the same ream of denim is used to make Old Navy, Gap, and Banana Republic jeans. 😂It’s all about the LOOK. Smh

@@Enig_Mataall three brands Gap Old Navy Banana even JCrew comes from more or less the same factories and all cost the same to manufacture stitch for stitch. There is a big difference between having nice things and having designer things; for me I opt for looking nice over spending exorbitant amounts of money on someone else’s name. I like some designer names but not all and it needs to look and feel classy. Some of these designers have horrible taste but because their name is attached to a shoe or a handbag people will spend a lot of money on these products. I’m cool with keeping it classy and that doesn’t have to break the bank.

Those designers do not even like our kind and you not me starve for inclusion into a life that will never happen. Every item you buy depletes your wealth and increases theirs by 100%+ markup.

I concur. I like to purchase items that are well crafted, designed and will last. I always look for the clothing's material, either if its 100% cotton, wool, linen, silk, full grain leather. I'm selective on the synthetic fibers, unless its a windbreaker made of polyester or nylon, a mix of materials to wisk away water or wind. Doesn't matter if I am buying an item at Walmart, Target, Bloomingdale's or Saks Fifth Avenue. Most of my buying I do at ebay or Grailed.

I want for nothing and work because I want to not because I have to any longer. I have learned about investing very young and stuck with it. It has more than paid off. I have never been into purchasing items because someone's name is written all over it. I could care less. That stuff is manufactured a very minimal cost and sold at exorbitant prices. Sad thing is, the average working Joe is going bankrupt purchasing these items that are high-end designers and they truly don't even want you wearing it in the first place. Singers/rappers need to stop advertising for free. They are talking about designer items and liquor brands they made popular (i.e., Hennessy), while the corporations benefit financially. Let them pay you dearly for it. The same stores on 5th avenue don't even want you there and will follow you around I'm sure. Stop letting the cost of material things define your self worth.

Why spend 89$ on a shirt, when I can invest 1200$, make a bunch of shirts I want, and in the process make 6-10k off them. And I get to wear something I made. as a clothing brand owner, he’s totally right - the only time i justify paying a lot for something is if i can see that it’s well made, with good fabrics, and somebody, usually an independent designer or local brand has actually put their sole into it. A lot of brands charge prices where they’re making 300% profit on a piece and nobody knows. Once you see how much things cost to be made like you said, it does change your perspective on it, as a consumer and a designer.

That's why there are stores like Ross, Marshall's, Walmart, TJ Maxx, Kohl's, Amazon, etc. Ain't nobody being forced to buy high end designers goods!

He’s exactly right! Nowadays, it’s nothing. Back before mid 90s you wore Gucci you had money. You drove a Bimmer or Benz before leasing and auction cars you had money. I remember one of my big woman friend told me in 1994 that the ones you see in Tommy Hilfiger they don’t have money. The men that look simple they’re the ones with the money. Facts to the highest levels.

Facts! Especially because black culture is American culture and people always like what we wear so they want to mimic us. And, like my grandma would say everyone wants to keep up with Jones knowing they can't afford it. So the fact that he is conscious to know he can afford doesn't need to buy it because it's another brand. You are the brand. You are your walking advertisement.

Fashion is European culture and has been for centuries. All the big fashion names are European. Gucci, Versace, Hugo Boss, Chanel, LV, Valentino, YSL, Parada etc The biggest fashion cities are Milan and Paris. The oldest fashion brands are ALL European. Some almost as old as America is as an official country. Even the oldest sports brands like Adidas and Puma are German. The newer kids on the block like Nike and UA were created by white American dudes. Europeans have been wearing sports clothing casually for over 100 years. Even watches, all the best are Swiss. Where does black or even American culture fit into this on the grander scale? ‘Johnny come lately’ is all the US are in this equation, especially black America. This is almost as bad as Americans thinking they invented freedom and democracy.
