@@TJRtheOriginal People like the writers at _Rolling Stone_ weaponize the word "oppression" to the point of meaninglessness--and their way of doing so is rooted in pure Marxist theory, where there is always an oppressor class and an oppressed class. This goes beyond mere politics to the point of being completely enthralled by an ideology. I'd like to hear artistic criticism from someone whose mind isn't enslaved to an ideology. RS wasn't always like this. They actually had good criticism in their early days, but in the last couple decades, they've turned into a complete parody of their former selves. I remember when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened up, and they had the requirement that an artist had to have been around for at least twenty years to be considered for inclusion. Then as I watched who was getting inducted, I said to myself, I thing that should be extended to at least 25 years. Of course, as you say, if RS only focuses on older music, they're not going to have the younger generation as their customers. I find it amusing how RS is so Commie in their ideology but so Capitalist in actual practice.

Marvin Gaye originally intended to just record a quickie throwaway album with as little effort as possible as his “divorce settlement” album, but he wound up getting completely obsessed by the project and pouring his heart out to his ex-wife (for much of this album is addressed directly to her) in a sprawling, elaborately & expensively produced double album. He’s clearly not over her, and his pain comes through in ways that are sometimes embarrassingly self-pitying but always fascinating. If you can, find a physical copy in some format that reproduces all of the gatefold album artwork, for even that is elaborately & lavishly illustrated with imagery symbolically describing their divorce and the unique circumstances of this album’s creation.

It is indeed quite odd that Dark Side Of The Moon (or, one could also argue, Wish You Were Here or even Animals) wasn’t included. Often these lists will limit themselves to only one entry per artist and in such a case I could see The Wall getting the nod because it is the Floyd work with the strongest narrative structure, telling a fully developed story over the course of the album rather than just having an overarching connecting theme, but there are multiple entries here by The Who and Marvin Gaye, and it’s hard to argue that when it comes to concept albums, Pink Floyd aren’t at least as worthy of exceptions to any “one work per artist” rule as they are.

The romantic song cycle could be seen as a precursor to the concept album (the idea of a "rock opera" comes across more as a song cycle). Perhaps the most famous song-cycle is Schubert's "Winterreise", (concept: a young man takes a journey in winter, with increasing loneliness and misery) of which my favorite recording of late has been the 1945 recording by Peter Anders with Michael Raucheisen on piano. I admit that I haven't listened to too much current rock music since about the mid '80s-straying into other types of music-, so most of the concept albums on Rolling Stone's list I've never heard of, and so not heard. The absence of arguably the greatest concept album, nay arguably the greatest album ever - dark side of the moon - makes me think that they were restricted to 1 album per artist. How many votes did some of the more obscure albums get - or was it a free for all and everyone gets to pick there favourite and it gets a place? Yes. We must distinguish between "the concept of an album" and "a concept album." The two are not the same. Back in the days of 78 rpm records, records were basically sold as singles--i.e., a record would have only one song per side. Some pieces of music, primarily classical music, were too long to fit onto a single 78, so they were put onto several records which were then bundled into a package which resembled an old photo album--hence the name. Running with that concept, collections of popular music--usually greatest-hits collections--were marketed in a similar fashion. But at this point, we're still talking about physical objects, not an intellectual concept. The long-playing record hit the market in 1947, I believe. Again, we have a physical object, but the overarching intellectual conception is still missing. At that time, musicians would book studio time and go in and record a bunch of songs in the space of a few hours. Their record company would then take the strongest songs from a session and release them as singles and promote them--leaving them with a bunch of left-over material that normally would just remain sitting in a can in the vault. The invention of the LP gave the record companies an idea. They would take this left-over stuff and put it all on an LP, hoping that a musician's really die-hard fans would buy it, so that the record company could recoup some of their investment that went into the production of that material. You've got to remember that back in those days, LP's were too pricey for the average consumer, so they were only marketed towards the die-hard fans. In 1955 (and not the late 1940's, as TJR says), Frank Sinatra hit upon the idea of putting together a group of songs on one LP that all created a similar mood, thus building upon each other to create a larger work of artistry, rather in the same way that classical composers had been writing song cycles for centuries. The result was _In the Wee Small Hours,_ the first album in the intellectual sense of what an album is--thus creating the concept of the album. An album is a collection of a specific recording of a specific group of songs. It doesn't matter the format it comes on, whether it be LP, tape, CD, or a computer file. The concept of the concept album didn't come along until the 1960's. A concept album doesn't just have a group of songs convey a particular mood--it has a group of songs tell a specific story. To compare it to classical music, I guess we could say we've moved from the territory of the song cycle into the territory of the opera. Thus, it's rather fitting that an early concept album, the Who's _Tommy,_ was called a rock opera.

Yes. That list from 1987 was voted on by nineteen current and former RS music critics. Later lists were voted on by hundreds of people in the music industry--and you can see the shift in their picks as soon as that started happening. The first such from 2003 named all the voters, and most of them were contemporary big names rather than long-established ones--hence Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were among the voters, but the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page, and Bruce Springsteen were noticeably absent.

Thompson said, "Ha! They don't mean the last thousand years! They mean the last ten years!"
