The CD Colour (which were actually a dark shade of purple, I believe) had nothing to do with the protection: the legit discs actually had a "wobble" of sorts, marked near the edge of the disc, which was different to a regular CD-ROM's "wobble". This is a common mistake amongst the beliefs about the copy protection, but regardless I enjoyed the video thoroughly :)
@miragesnworlds
2 жыл бұрын
This is correct. There was however a video tour of a sony pressing factory for ps1 games where the voiceover claimed the dark ink in the cds was piracy protection. So some people believe that sony was promoting the dark color as an anti piracy measure to throw people off the scent of the actual DRM method

I will never forget going from NES, Sega, N64, and finally PS1. I popped in this little game I rented called Medal of Honor and the controls frustrated me. The left stick let me move and the right stick let me control the camera. I was so used to N64 and only needing one analog stick. It was like learning how to play guitar or throwing a baseball with my left hand. It was incredibly frustrating and I was pissed off. I shut it down and came back later when I cooled off. Think about that for a second. We take for granted the Xbox and PlayStation controller but at that time, it was new and difficult to learn when we were all used to D-Pad controls and N64 with only one analog stick. Haha!

#27. Polygons and textures (at least at PS1 level) didn't take up that much memory. It was mainly FMV's, voice overs, and music audio that took up memory and why some games were on multiple discs. For example, every Final Fantasy VII disc contains about 99% of the same 3D data and bitmaps. It was only the FMV's that were different on the discs. It's why even on the last disc, you can revisit all the old towns and fight all the old enemies in random battles. Riven took up five discs because the ENTIRE GAME was pre-rendered graphics. The fact that it WASN'T real 3D was why it needed so many discs.

It's actually not. The system does not see any difference between a black or silver disc. What anti piracy function it has, if any, would be for a human to notice if it was a copy or unlicensed press. Fun fact: The Gran Turismo album (as in music CD) is also black. A little easter egg to those who knew the band made the intro song on one of the GT games maybe. :) Still as hard/easy to copy as any other music CD though.
