Yeah, this light is loosing a lot of output due to thermal limiting. The light enclosure is not designed to be a heat sink and has poor thermal dissipation. The halogen bulb and enclosure are designed just to run really hot. A halogen bulb makes mostly heat and has a light output as a bonus.

Good luck with your light. I tried this and my COB popped from too much heat. I ended up mounting the new COB on an old server-CPU heat sink (with thermal paste) and then screwed that onto the back of the lamp. It's been good since then.

Excellent comment man. Just the feedback I was looking for. I definitely want to ballance making it reliable and still keep it simple. A computer friend of mine recommended the same. Next I want to try getting it to sync to the actual aluminum housing. There's enough housing that I think it may dissipate enough. A solid block of aluminum right to the back of the housing with paste in the joints might work. Aluminum is pretty thirsty but it has to shake hands with free air. Like the heat sink, you need surface area.
