Now you have me reminiscing about my equipment. My first tractor was a 1954 JD 60, two cylinder, that I bought in 1971. I bought a JD #5 semi mounted 7' sickle bar mower for it. We cut maybe 20 acres of hay with it and the next year, 1972, I bought a used JD #480 9' haybine and a JD #640 4 bar side delivery rake with my "saved for me" college fund, about $2k. Boy was Mom pissed but Dad and I were in "hog heaven". Stilled used and had all that equipment when I sold out in 2005. Yes, I finished a 2 year Associates Degree in Metal Tech, I was working part time through college to pay my way through.

It's kind of fun to think back on the things we've had. Right after I bought my farm I had the woods logged so I could afford to update some equipment.

Nice 🙂. I started with an MF 41 sickle mower...just bought another one a week ago😉. When we finally switched to swathers in 2010, I thought we had died and gone to heaven 😁. A real nice history of swather technology. I am sure glad you northern farmers figured the tech out before it came to my area!

Your welcome for the swathers! They are just not well suited to our terrain.

I cut a lot of acres with a Series II D15 AC and a 990 IH mower conditioner. 2nd gear high range, loved it in wet spots, so light it could almost walk on water. If the 990 would have conditioned better we would still have it. Great video as usual.

Neat. We never had any of those but the closest was a new idea 5409 which was just a 3 pt disc mower version of the 5209.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane there. 👍🏻 We've had an IH 990 & 1190 both were 9' cut. Now as you've seen, I've got a JD 260 disc mower that is a 7' 10" cut. I liked the intro. 👍🏻 👍🏻 ROCK ON FARMER PETE!!!

I came close to buying a IH 990 before I bought my Hesston 1110 and was close to buying a NI 5209 before I bought my Krone. Both the IH and NI were and are excellent machines IMHO.

Nice walk down memory lane. I think almost everyone has had or used a 489 New Holland. Was not a big fan when we had one. Take care Pete

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't think the 489 was any better than the 990.

We had a 230 swather. I hated running it! On our hilly ground it was always exciting going down the hills... especially when you had to pull back on the levers to slow down. I swear I thought it was going to flip right over on it's nose.

We had a 1100 New Holland swather I hated it! My father in law gave me a 488 haybine I rebuilt it and used it for 18 years till I found my 1411 disk bine and I'll never go back to a sickle bar!

I don't know how we got any hay cut before discbines!
