Fashion magazines are widely criticized for their representations of women's bodies and the promotion of consumerist culture, but they are also hugely politically and culturally powerful. But from where did they gain this power? Historian Dr Serena Dyer explains how the fashion magazine, as well as the fashion plate and fashion journalism in general, has evolved over 500 years (well, 5 centuries, 400-ish years...). From the domestic household publications of the seventeenth century, through the glittering magazines of the Georgians and the consumer agenda of the nineteenth century, to the glossy magazines of the twentieth century, fashion magazines can reveal so much about how people of the past thought about fashion, time, and their own identities.
