Please can someone explain? In this song, and some others, the tune is easily recognised. Most Sacred Harp singing, though very attractive, does not appear to have a particular melody. Why is this song different?

Sacred Harp singing has the melody part sung by men and women. When the group has lots of strong men on that part, the very loud altos will be heard more prominently as their part is pitched above where the men are singing. Another part sung by both men and women is the treble part. Again, depending upon the mix of men and women, that part will either drown out or fade under the melody. Finally, the harmony of this particular song follows the more modern rules based on thirds, rather than the older style of many of the Sacred Harp songs which is based on fourths and fifths. And you probably know this melody? And therefore your ear will pick it out easily? I, too had trouble hearing the melody on recordings when I first started singing from this songbook.
