In kendo, there are four cuts: Men (Head), Kote (wrist) dō (left and right side of the body) and tsuki (throat). The cut has to be in the correct place on the armour and hit with the correct part of the shinai, accompanied by full spirit and good posture. The cut must also be followed by zanshin, or a readiness to fight or defend oneself. It sounds complicated, but it's all kind of flows when you're in a competition :P

I wish this sort of respect could be integrated into all American sports. It just shows that it's possible to be this intense and at the same time be respectful. I mean, look at them, they're screaming at each other, but at the end they still sheath they're swords and bow. I'm jealous as both an athlete and an American.

I have never taken a Kendo class, but will be soon , and all my knowledge of this martial art is through books. With that said, this is not boring, there is a great mental struggle going on in this fight along with a physical one. Kendo is about strength of spirit and mind, when your spirit is strong along with your mind. Your strike will be strong. It will be effortless. The 'kiai' is a shout of power, used in many martial arts. They usually unleash it before or during a strike or technique. It's not as much about taunting your opponent as it is focusing your energy (or 'ki') and releasing it in one concentrated blow. Look 'kiai' up on Wikipedia for more info.

To the matter of age: I started when I was seventeen and now I´m doing for 1 1/2 years. You can get better quite quick, but you maybe never be able to catch up with a japanese who did this since he was five. My sensei started when he was 25 and now he is second Dan (could be higher, but he stopped taking higher Dans after an argument with the guys who are taking the exams). He´s one of the best Kendoka in Germany and is known among some japanese masters.

@ryuzzaky you score by hitting the head (men), torso (do) or wrist (te) with the shinai (the sword), making your foot make contact with the floor at the same time, while shouting the relevant word (men, do, or te), a ki-ai again at the same time. also contact must be made in the top 1/4 of the shinai and after the attack has taken place, the attacker must be ready to attack again e.g the shinai point bust still be aimed at the opponent's 'men'.

@619kammy There really aren't any special techniques solely used by any schools, but some schools/kendokas specialize in certain styles. For example: one school might emphasize straightforward attacks without too much flapping about, while another school emphasizes a more technical counter-attacking style.

In kendo the "kiai" is used to relax the body, and thus increase the speed of the strike. Holding your breath causes your muscles to tense and become less flexible, and this will of course produce slower reflex of the body and mind.

Shinai is the same weight as the bokken because of the leather, its bigger, it got solid wood in the middle of the sword. so you might consider it heavier ever. It's the technique that makes you fast, not making unnecessary movements and such. The worlds fastest can counter in 0,5 sec

They raise their hands above their heads after a strike because that is part of the technique. You're able to immediately attack if you see your opponent coming at you so even though it may appear the torso is exposed, it's a lot harder than you would think to actually hit it.

no. There are 4 scoring points in Kendo: Men (head) Dou (body) Kote (wrist) Tsuki (throat) (not usually done) Matches are to a certain number of points, I believe it is normally 2. After every scoring hit, the kondoka return to their original starting positions.

it's the same in kumdo, too. Except the words for the strikepoints are different. 멀리 (Meolli) is a strike to the top of the head 호리 (Hori) is a strike to the torso 수목 (Sumok) is a strike to the wrist 치름 (Chireum) is a stab to the throat Also in kumdo we don't do that squat at the start, we just bow. Other than that, the rules seem the same to me. This was a great match!

No worries. There IS a lot of technique here and it is a very intense mental contest. Harada-San (white) seemed to be the most aggressive player coming up with the most strikes, however Suzuki-San, although he appeared to be moving backward a lot was holding centre more and goading Harada to come within his maai (distance). They spent a LOT of time in isoku itono ma (point to point) and very little in tsuba zeriai (extreme close). They are very skilled and hard out players.

why is it that after certain series of action, they either stand a certain distance apart with their swords cross and mututally step back until the swords are uncrossed? or get in each other faces with swords crossed vertically, but neither appearing to attack the other from that close? a neutral stance of some sort?

It's like in any other martial arts sparrings or combats, you don't see a lot of fancy moves like spinning kicks or beautiful movements. I think those fancy moves slow down your attacks and make you exposed to your opponent more. All the competitors are well-trained, so I don't think they would risk doing those moves, although I've seen many well-executed fancy moves, and they worked.
@Mistwraith99

@flapplewapple Who says you can't make wide movements with those pants? It's not a skirt; they're divided all the way up, like any other pair of pants. You could do the splits in those things if you really wanted to. The narrow kendo footwork is a tactical choice, not a limitation of their clothing.
