I read a book on boxer rebellion. 400 multi national protected the foreign legation. The chinese converts there starved and many died due to unequal food distribution. Not far away, there was a church protected by mere 20 or 40 italian solders led by a lieutenant . Administered by a priest, they held out until the end and everyone, caucasian and chinese, got equal share of food. Epic defense and brave lieutenant olivieri was killed days before relief forces arrived. That story even more moving

Only the Catholic converts starved from what I heard, as the protestant missionaries took care of their converts. Also, the Church of the Savior (Beitang) was defended by Chinese converts (around 3000), around 30-40 french soldiers and 12 Italian sailors under Olivieri, with the overall defence being led by the French lieutenant Eugène Darcy - not by a "mere 20 or 40 italian soldiers"... The main Italian force, it seems, rather worked with the Japanese to defend the Fu line.

My dad and I always love to watch 55 Days At Peking back then. China actually declined as one of the best ancient civilization ever. After the Boxer Rebellion was actually over with, China had a great and difficult time ahead; strange things happening, new thoughts, new ways of living, new ideas. The ways of old China was actually a great memory.

The discussion so far: -Don't forget the national humiliation -Article 21 is the national humiliation of declaring war? -This is not yet understood -Do you want to commemorate the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution? What does article 21 refer to, the Chinese constitution, the United Nations declaration, the 21 demands of the Japanese? And also what does the Great leap forward has to do with the Boxer war discussion?
