Nice fish for sure! Fish of a lifetime… but that fish is dead. Dude basically drowned it with the back and fourth.

That pushes and pulls water thru the gills which increases oxygen

The fish swam off nice and strong. Plus out of curiosity, how do you drown a fish? Serious question. Never ever heard anyone say that before.

@@platinumpursuitoutdoors Gills are unidirectional, fish don't swim backwards so there wouldn't be a need for them to function as such. Yes, you can suffocate a fish by pulling it backwards. After a fight fish more commonly die from acidosis caused by lactic acid build up. Oxygen is required to recover from this condition. Also, the gills are designed to function in one direction and pulling the fish backwards can cause physical damage to the gills.

@@platinumpursuitoutdoors I suggested rolling them back and forth slowly is the best procedure if they don't take off right away.

The back and forth reviving was considered standard practice 20, 30 years ago but much has been learned since then. Research has shown this is not conducive to a healthy release. One article compared it to running a sprint and then having air forced into your lungs. Best practice is to hold it from the tail, let the fish gain its balance, recoup, and it will let you know when it’s ready to go. Seen way too many fish go belly up after a quick release.
