First cylinders were made from brown wax one by one, and an artist had to sing or play as many times as there were records to be made. Later cylinders were acoustically dubbed or pantographed from old brown wax or from Edison diamond discs. In 1902 the "Gold-Moulded" process was developed for 2-minute cylinders, which start to get very rare, since they are under attack by mold fungus, and black ones are prone to crack under mechanical or temperature stress. Always pack them in their original felt-padded boxes. Here we have a representative sample of 56 boxed early black wax cylinders made between 1902 and 1908, in superb visual and playing condition. 28 have lids with record-matching printed titles and/or record numbers. 3 boxes are empty. Let's listen to 3 of the cylinders, played on a 1906 Columbia model BF 20th century graphophone, called the "Peerless" with Lyric T-3 reproducer and a 21" Searchlight horn. The fidelity is unsurpassed with this setup, compared with a mini machine like the cute model Q.
The records and later the two graphophones will be sold on eBay:
