The allocation of private frequencies in the range of 3.7 GHz enables companies to set up cost-effective, independent 5G campus networks. This offers industry opportunities such as improved flexibility, security and scalability, but also raises questions: Is 5G an alternative or complementary to existing technologies? What specific potential do local 5G networks offer, taking existing processes into account?
In this context, the 5G.NRW project “5Guarantee”, funded by MWIKE, addressed the research question if 5G performance promises can be implemented in practice based on specific applications and for which applications 5G is actually required.
In addition to identifying applications and their performance requirements, TU Dortmund University developed the STING system, an evaluation and control system for 5G campus networks that enables an objective comparison of technologies in operational production environments. The STING system developed was integrated into Miele's production operations in order to identify the application-specific potential of local 5G networks, verify the 5G performance promises in practice and test the integration of 5G into existing process landscapes.
