We have a big pulley on the engine crankshaft, it provides a 6:1 speed increase.

@MRkallek91 Yes, they are "self supercharged" using the crankcase side of the piston. Well, at least the great majority of 2 strokes are, the ones that need oil mixed with the gas, or have an oil injector. The exceptions are generally diesels like the GMC 6-71 series, and opposed piston types, like the Napier Deltic, and Junkers Jumo.

@douro20 Yes, new ones do cost a lot of money! The turbo on a friends car developed an oil leak, it was about $2000 later that he had a new turbo back on it, from a car dealer!

@NastytheGREASERZOMBI yes, also you should both remember that two strokes are self-supercharging hence they got the most power on highest rpm's. just bolt a bigger cylinder on.

Oh yes, gears would work, but require close machining tolerances on the mounting etc. You can buy the gears from places like McMaster -Carr etc. machining gears yourself is possible, but time consuming, as well as requiring a lot of special cutters, and equipment. I have a hard enough time just getting a lathe to use! :)

@NastytheGREASERZOMBI yeah haha do you know how to clean oil from the crankcase? i have trans oil in there from a bad seal i was thinking dumping gas in there and trying to blow it out with carb cleaner. i dont want to replace the rings and have them be destroyed by dirty oil

Hmmm, a moving application, so a shop vac is probably out of the question. I will have to think this one over a bit. I wonder about a small turbo perhaps (just brainstorming) :)

Yes, a belt or chain going that quickly could certainly cause some major damage!

It might be possible. What are you planning to use the supercharger for, to force feed a small engine or something? Please comment back, and I will see if I can help you out. I got started on building these Briggs projects when I did a basic design for a sleeve valved lawnmower engine, then we used it for our senior group project, lots of fun. Wish I had access to the engineering machine shop now!!! :)

Well a supercharger belt takes that rpm in some situations so mabye a belt system with a hard belt tentioner would work better. I know theres chain rated past 50,000 rpm so as long as it was super tight on the sprockets. Just dont do any belt ro chain setup without a big guard in case you break a belt or chain.

New turbochargers are very expensive. Why? Because of how long it takes to make the precisely machined and balanced impellers.

I would guess that the chain would fly off the sprockets with the 50,000 rpm speed of the centrifugal blower. In my opinion, I don't think a chain could take that, but I could be wrong :)

Actually it would be more like 35,000 rpm, as a racing 5 horse Briggs is good for over 6000 rpm. Anyway, it still isn't fast enough though. According to a youtuber in the know, this turbo compressor needs to turn around 100,000 to make decent boost. Yes, this did move some air, but boost would be negligible :( So do you have a Roots type blower to power with the electric motor, that would probably be best.

You could just use a set of back and forth chains and sprockets from a bike as your gears.

is there a way to put a turbocharger on a 2 stroke dirt bike? mine? with little time/ money i dont know how it would work with the oil mix would you need premium gas?
@njmvermont

could you run it with a set of gears or a chain system so it would reach that speed?

so what is that, 20,000 RPM? Does it make any boost? I am curious because I want to try a fork lift 9 hp electric motor driving a supercharger, but if a really big turbo cold work I could try that instead. I just thought there would not be any usable boost spinning so slow?

how do you plan to get the impeller spining 40,000 - 80,000 RPM ??
