Thanks man! Do my best to design and manufacture exotic engines like this one with rotary valve. I hope you enjoy it! Yeah, it runs crazy like hell!!! Have you already seen the V8 video in which it runs?

@@danielhunziker3577 yes I’ve seen that video now. Amazing! The definition of Swiss precision engineering.

Thanks for sharing! Our 100cc Briggs and Stratton version 3.0 made I think 2.2 hp. We later made a 3.1 and 3.2 version with more aggressive ports for the valve and it reved up significantly faster, but we never dynoed it.

Sounds interesting! How was the perceived performance of the engine with the rotary valve head compared to the original OHV head? Yes, the timing has a very big influence. This one has IO 50°/ IC 90°/ EO 90°/ EC 50°. Otherwise, speeds of up to 20'000 rpm wouldn't be possible. How was your chosen timing?

@@danielhunziker3577 It was originally rated at either 1.5 or 2 hp, so we were making a lot more power.

Thanks Daniel, I have been looking for videos of model rotary valve engines for ages and yours is the only one I ever found. Your skills are fantastic and the rotary valve system you have developed looks excellent, thanks for sharing. I have now subscribed.

Hi Berty 👋 You're welcome! I know. Rotary valves model engines are very rare and sometimes you can see them run in some videos. But it is never shown exactly how they are constructed and how they work. It makes me happy to hear that you appreciate my engines and the work behind them.

Even if I never get to trying to the rotary valve system I find it facinating. Is there a formula for the distance between the inlet and outlet vents ? Thanks Daniel.
@danielhunziker3577

Hi Berty! Yes, the size of the intake and exhaust valve depends on the diameter and the timing. The valve width is b = 2/3 x D × sin(a/2). Where "a" is the opening angle of the inlet or outlet valve at the rotary valve. In my case, you get 2/3 x 12mm x sin(160°/2) = 7.88mm.

Love the project Daniel, what is the CC of the V8?

The V8 ist eight time this single cylinder. So it's 53ccm.

From what I've seen of previous shots you took of the valve, it doesn't appear to have much port timing overlap, especially for a 22k RPM engine. How many degrees of overlap, and what's your centerline separation?

Hi James 👋 Good question! You are right. The first versions of my engines had zero timing. You've probably noticed this in older videos. But that was years ago and all my newer motors have a timing 50°/90°/90°/50° (Inlet open / Inlet close / Exhaust open / Exhaust close). Also this one here. The valve opening time is therefore 320° and we have an overlap of 140°. Best regards from Switzerland, Daniel.

@danielhunziker3577 - rotary valves flow much differently than poppets... typically with less initial flow. It would be great if you could post some numbers @ 12" or 14" vacuum.

That's right! Rotary valve engines have a different timing behavior as an engine with poppet valves. The timing I have chosen is nothing special and maybe not perfect for a rotary valve engine. I was thinking about to make various rotary valves with modified timing to see when we have an optimum. This is one of those future projects that I would like to do one day. I have too many projects and things I still want to do 🙈😅 But not enough time...
