I'm a Stellantis(Chrysler/FCA) tech at a dealership that also drag races on the weekend. I work on these engines all the time...well the SRT 6.4 and truck 6.4...we never see the 6.1 anymore because most quit running many moons ago. I can make the 6.1 or 6.4 decision fairly simple for most people: Deciding which engine to start with highly depends on your goal. If you want to keep the engine fairly stock with some bolt-ons and minor mods, go with the 6.4L. Cars like the 1320 Challenger, 392 Charger, and 392 Challener. If you are wanting to heavily modify the engine, I mean go all out, but not spend your life savings doing so, go with the 6.1L. You can upgrade the rotating assembly, bore it a little over, and play with the camshaft selection...when matched with an older 5sp auto or 5sp standard...you got you a hot little ride. If you want to heavily mod the 6.4L, be ready to break the bank because of all the modifying and deleting you'll have to do such as the MDS and VVT systems, depending specifically on which 6.4 you start with. The 6.4L blocks are stronger, but there's all the other headache to go with it. If you want to go that route, either buy a bare 6.4L block or go with a Hellcat crate motor...either will be cheaper than the amount of time and money you'll spend heavily modding a SRT 392. My pick for the most bang for the buck without spending big money on a Hellcat: Dodge Challenger R/T 1320. You get the full power of the SRT 392 and most of the SRT suspension/drivetrain upgrades...for the lower price of a "special edition" R/T. Be sure to buy the passenger seat with it...yes, that's extra.
@knowplay3258
Жыл бұрын
Some will say to start with a non MDS 6.4L from a manual trans car. Well...that will save you from having to delete the MDS, BUT the provisions for the MDS system in the oil gallery are still there. These provisions are made to direct or redirect lifter actuation/lubrication depending MDS being active or not. These provisions can cause oil cavitation or restricted oiling even with the MDS deleted. Hence....the infamous "Hemi Tick". 5sp manual cars just basically had MDS deleted from the factory...for several reasons I won't go into...but the openings are still there.

Fantastic video! The issue with boost on the 6.4's really isn't the material of the pistons there are tons of OEM boosted engines running Hyperutectic slugs. The problem is the tight ring gaps, as the bores heat up the rings try to expand and they can't and when that happens they pop the top of the piston off because the top ring land is pretty thin on stock 6.4 pistons. With good tuning a 6.4 can run 7 lbs safely. I've been running a 2.3L Magnuson on my 6.4 since 40k miles and I just turned 80k miles. My engine was tuned very conservatively by Hemifever and it's been rock solid. But yes, if you want to run big boost then you will want to upgrade to T6 forged slugs and also a good idea to swap to some billet 4340 rods like those from Molnar.

I'm thinking that if one were to build one of these engines from a wrecking yard, I'd go after the "stronger" 6.4L BGE block. I also notice that these two engines connect to a small block Magnum LA bellhousing. A drag race version of the 46-48RH/RE (A518/618) could be built to then drop into some old ratty (or nice) A, B or even C body. Just a tip for us geezers that still fool around with such things in our own garages. FYI, I promise I won't butcher my own Scat Pack 6.4 in my Challenger for "experimental" purposes. I'll wait until I get a deal on a wrecked vehicle and pull that engine.

Great work. I have an 06 Charger SRT8 with 340,000 miles and running strong. The 6.1 is a great engine - more purpose built for higher RPM but lacking the low-end torque of the 6.4. I have raced many 6.4s with the NAG and they always open up a car length or two from low speeds and then we hold in place up to 140. All of the optimizing for the 6.4 (intake, cam phasing, etc.) creates more low-end power and better MPG. But I am not a fan of MDS. I will pay more for gas

The main reason for the lifter issues happens on 6.4 and 5.7, due to the mds system. thats why alot of mopar fans get the mds delete kit, or just tune it out. 6.1 didnt have that issue or any of the manual cars cus they didnt have to switch on and off when cruising. wish that it could have been a recall cus it was such a big issue in the HEMI engines
@DarkSlayer487
Жыл бұрын
No. Its not the MDS system. As stated in the video, the 6.1 suffers the same issue but at a much less common rate. The lifters are the issue. Thankfully, Dodge updated the non MDS lifters in 2015 when the Hellcat came out so Manual cars and Hellcats from then until now are more or less cured of that issue. The newer non MDS lifters are commonly referred to as Hellcat lifters. Simply turning off your MDS system will NOT save you. My 2013 SRT Challenger that got a new engine under warranty is proof of that. Its why I got a 6 speed when I ordered my brand new Scat Pack Widebody last year.

I have a 6.1 and the 6.2 Hemi '07 6.1 Jeep SRT8 140k miles daily driven, other than getting 10 mpg and a few electrical issues I've had no major problems. Being a 15yr old Hemi it definitely requires a higher level of regular maintenance otherwise very reliable. AWD launch never gets old. The 6.2 is my other Jeep. it's ridiculous and shouldn't be legal...I passed on purchasing a 6.4 Jeep SRT only because they decided to throw the Hellcat engine in the Jeep Trackhawk

6.1 was a lot more "raw". Traction control sucked, skid control sucked, torque management was nearly non-existent, and the NAG-1 can hold a ton of power with a proper converter and TCM tune. Drop some good pistons in it, and they'll make a ton of power with boost. Richard Holdener took a stock 5.7 of the same era and made north of 1000hp before breaking a piston. Good video.

very informative video, can you please provide me the lobe separation angle on both 6.1 & 6.4 camshafts?? i got a lifter failure and probably cam lobe damaged on my 2010 grand cherokee SRT8 6.1L so i have to replace them anyways and contemplating to upgrade to a 6.4 cam/springs if there is any gain by doing it but first need the complete specs for both camshafts which will help me to decide what route to follow, thanks in advance

I mean Boost is fine on the stock pistons as long as you gap the rings as shown by Holdener's big bang video on a Stock 5.7 he was pushing 20PSI before it blew and it's due to the extreme backpressure of a single turbo that's too small
@ryanc2927

I agree w this in lieu of the method engineered of the runners. It’s designed for it even has a similar (but not as low) compression ratio as the hellcat. Even more the fact that procharger demonstrates an install of their blower directly on a red Jeep srt on their website. If my Mazda 2.5 l 3 can handle boost from the factory why can’t it? Lol. I do however like the compare and contrast of why lifter failure may be occurring more on 6.4s as more were produced. Good review

So it seems like the stock lifters they use on the NA engines can't handle more than 360ish horsepower. Which is strange because it's not like that power is getting transfered to the lifters. They're not getting the brunt of it. Perhaps they can't handle as aggressive of a cam as these engines have. What I don't understand is why they don't take a look at what gm and ford used in their pushrod engines and follow the same formula. It would make a lot more sense and get rid of a common plague amongst their v8s.

Difference between the 5.7 and 6.1 Differences in the engines.... The Block is different The Cam is different The Intake Manifold is different The Heads are different The Exhaust manifolds are different I think that covers the majors. In other words the 5.7 and 6.1 are very different. Oh, the Throttle body...... it's the same :) The quoted HP is at the crank, not at the wheels. To acheive the 6.1L HP from your 5.7L you'd be at least looking at heads and a cam swap, exhaust, and tuning.
