Thanks for covering the 6.5 CM. I have a 6.5 CM, 30-06 and .270 and I reload . The 6.5 is the most accurate of the three. Shoots .250 groups @100 great little gun . Can’t say it hits as hard as .270 or 30-06 but with 13-14 grains less powder I don’t expect it to. I think the hate comes from those who have never tried one, and the rookies that think it smokes 30-06 and 7 mags and can kill deer and elk at 2000 yards. It’s just a good mid powered 6.5 that is damn accurate. Nothing more, nothing less in my humble opinion.

While certainly not the best elk cartridge, it kills them just fine. So far my kiddos have used it on elk out to 400 thus far. Kills just fine. There really is not a debate about deer with. If you find it lacking, learn to pick good hunting bullets. Its rep for wounding, i believe is due to hornady being the creator and they market the 143 eldx as a great premium hunting bullet which it is not. Its accurate with a good bc but it is not a great hunting bullet. If you use an accubond, accubond long range, barnes lrx, swift scirroco or equivalents, it does what the 308 does with lower recoil and does it longer. No one hates on anyone touting the 308 as an elk cartridge.

At 61 years old, and someone who has shot a lot of deer, went to school to build accurate rifles I must admit to loving the magnums. A young man who is a friend of my son came down here to Az to shoot his newly built 6.5 creedmoor in the Ruger system. He had only factory ammo, when we went out to shoot. It was a fun rifle for sure. I shot a 4 inch 3 shot group at 1000 yards. The 6.5 i believe is responsible for getting a lot of younger men into shooting long range and having fun. Concedering how fine the 6mm Remington is on deer I would not hesitate to use the 6.5 creedmoor. In fact the first deer I ever shot was at age 11 with the model 660 in 6.5 Remington Magnum. I think you did a wonderful job in explaining the 6.5 Creedmoor. I must admit at first I was in the camp of why do we need it, but now I think it has done more positive than negative. I will add that after the young man left I went to the local gun shop in Yuma and bought a early model 7mm Remington with the stainless barrel and it was easy to get to 1000 yards with reloads, and it's easy to build reduced loads with H4895. So the 6.5 even got me shooting out to 1000 yards.

You know there are naysayers about everything,and if you want to nick pick,you can find fault with every cartridge out there.The perfect round for everything has not been invented,nor will it ever be.So I'm happy with ALL of the new cartridges that have come out.They are all great cartridges in their own right.I like the 6.5 creedmoor because it's a good shooting,light recoiling,moderate velocity cartridge.Ive always liked the 6.5x55 and wished it would do better here in the states,then the 260 came out,and now we have the creedmoor.They all do the same,but the creedmoor is the most efficient,so I say welcome and hope it stays around for 100 yrs.Its a great deer size game cartridge,and probably up to caribou size animals.So let the haters hate,but for those that actually shoot and hunt,we have another great little round to enjoy.Thanks for the vid,and keep up the good work.

Spacepathfinder1 exactly the video i was looking for. This is the end all video for any argument i get into with people about the creedmoor! It is phenomenal, 605 yards if i remember correctly and it only ran like 40 or 50 yards and dropped. I have seen deer run further with bigger calibers at a much closer range. People dont like the creedmoor because it steps on the toes of almost every .308 fan in existance. It lays a whoopin on the .308 and they dont like it when their bullet gets heavily outperformed. The creedmoor is a perfect all around hunting round because i can put a varmint bullet in it and kill groundhogs and yotes and bobcats and then i can put a 140gr bullet in it and if you know the rifle you just adjust the scope to the heavier bullet and you can hunt elk all with the same rifle in the same day.

With today's technology the 6.5 Creedmoore retains enough foot pounds of energy out to the 600 yards distances because it can keep this energy up to 600 yards without going beyond the 143 grain weight rifle bullet with other Rifle Calibers they lost their Foot Pounds of Energy at about 400 Yards so that is the reason in an Rifle Caliber like the .308 Winchester would need to switch to a 168 Grains Bullet weight from the 150 Bullet Weight Bullet to go out to 1000 yards the .308 Winchester must move up to the 175 Grains Bullet Weight Bullet If you want to Max out your Foot Pounds of Energy by switching from the normal bullet weight to the top end of the rifle bullet weight for the .308 Winchester Rifle CAlifer

Americans have never been susceptible to metrc cartridges. The 6.5mm bullet has been around for more than a 100 years. I am from South Aftica, My grandfather, long gone now, rest is soul, hunted with a 6.5 x 58 porrugeuse Mauser. To him, a gun was a tool, he hunted for meat. I have seen with my own young 11 year old eyes, many years ago, the biggest Kudu bulls fall with this cartridge. The 6.5 x 55 mm has also been very popular over here. I am glad Honady has brought the 6.5 to the masses. I personally think think the 6.5CM compared to the 6.5 swede, is like the 308 compared to the 30-06, but in this case the 6.5CM is better. I'm sure it's a great round but I'm already rolling in different calibers. The 5 shot group you displayed at 11:40 looks just like a group I shot with my 257 Roberts a while back. Besides, in 45 years of hunting in Alabama, I can count less than a dozen deer I've killed at over 150 yards. All BS aside, there just aren't many places in the state that require long shots of 400+ yards. If they told the truth, most Alabama, and Southeastern, deer hunters could get by with '94's in 30-30! Anyways, I enjoyed your review. I remember that WSM's were all the rage 20 years ago and now only the 270 & 300 versions are on the shelves locally and the 270 & 30-06's outsell them hands down. If the 6.5CR is still available in 20 years, I might think about it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

@@randyschaff8939 You know, I can hit paper at fairly consistently at long distances because I know they're stapled to a non-moving backer. My concern is that while a deer may be the same distance, I've seen folks press the trigger and the deer takes a step. Instead of a great heart/lung shot, they have a gut shot deer running away. At 300yds and closer, the bullet arrives on target almost instantly. Double and triple that distance and there's enough time for a less than optimal hit to occur. This is not saying anything against the hunter's ability but rather the deer's movement as the shot goes off. At the 300yds and closer distances I prefer, my other calibers work just fine.

@@paulsimmons5726 Hi - and around here we have common, gusty winds - I have seen rotors form which caused a .243 bullet to drop over a foot more at 300 yards with a wind from behind - figuring what exactly your bullet will have to pass thru befor arriving on target out there can be difficult at best - at least the big bc 6.5 bullets move less in the wind so are more resistant to gusts and wind shears. I've owned the 260 remington, 6.5 Swede, and four 6.5 CM's. I have killed 35 deer with these cartridges, and there is not one ounce of difference between them on game with handloads. The biggest thing the CM has going for it is the abundance of extremely accurate hunting, and match factory ammo. Also in four different rifles I've been able to touch the lands with long match bullets, and still feed through factory magazines. Also all four factory CM rifles easily achieved sub moa with factory or handloads. I cant say I had that experience with the 260 or 6.5 swede. All of them are great cartridges in their own right, and deserve to be popular in my opinion. Another great video also, I really enjoy your channel!

All your telling me is if those same companies went out and brought out the same match barrels in 6,5 swede the Swede would shoot better created a bunch of new swede ammo they could hype up the Swede! Why are the Swede , 308, 30-06 and 8.57 military ammo it is because those barrel don't burn out like a Creedmoor will or especially a 260 rem which will smoke the Creedmoor but nobody jumped on that bandwagon!

I think a lot of hate also stems from people who misuse it, meaning they use match bullets for elk and big game hunting, and attempt to make shots they are not capable of making and not understanding limitations on kinetic energy and the nuances of bullets, using bullets that were not designed for big game hunting. I think 6.5 cm a fine deer and antelope rifle, that's hard to beat. Yes you can use it for elk hunting but know your limits, limits of the bullet you choose and limits on kinetic energy. common sense keep your ranges inside 300 yards use tough bullets like Nosler Accubond's and partitions, Norma Oryx, Swift A frame's and Scirrocos. Barnes LRX and TSX. If you elk hunt with your 6.5cm stay away from VLD and match style bullets and making stupid shots with it, that's beyond your abilities and the bullets abilities. 6.5 cm can be a good elk cartridge if it's used properly. In Scandinavia hunters use the 6.5x55 to moose hunt, you don't hear about them making ridiculous shots with them and using match bullets. To me the 6.5cm and 6.5x55 do the same thing. The Swede is very popular in Scandinavia with hunters. I am considering getting a 6.5cm as opposed to 6.5x55. Shot placement is extremely important, but your pill has to be tough enough to expand properly to get to an elks boiler room, that's where a tough, controlled expansion or bonded bullet comes into play with ample kinetic energy. Match bullets on elk or any other big game animal act like a grenade, fragments and not reaching the vitals resulting in a wounded animal. Match grade bullets are No-bueno when it comes to big game hunting. This is true for not only 6.5's but for all cartridges and bullets. That's where I think the 6.5' cm's hate stems from mostly.

Spot on assessment. When I was doing research for a hunting rifle, I hadn't even heard of the the Creedmoor, but had my heart set on the 6.5 Swede as I had become very enamored with that round. While I am a fan of the 6.5 Creedmoor, I most certainly don’t drink the kool-aid by some that it's the end all be all cartridge. It doesn't do any better, or any worse than the .260 Remy or 6.5 Swede. Last year when shopping for a hunting rifle, I started doing what most of us probably do; compare the caliber I was leaning toward to others. When I’d type 6.5 Swede vs... I’d get returns like 6.5 Swede vs. 6.5 creed etc. As I stated previously, I had never heard of the round before then. The more I researched the Creedmoor, I came to the conclusion that ballistically it’s in a dead heat with the Swede. The pluses in its favor for me were that it’s available in a short action (which I’ve since come to prefer), it’s more readily available than the Swede (here in the States anyway), it’s less expensive than the Swede, and where I live in CA where the law mandates lead-free ammo, pickens’ are real slim for Swede, so I went with the Creedmoor. Many argue that you can load the Swede hotter because of it's 55mm case vs the Creedmoor's 48mm. Well, the Creedmoor can be loaded hotter too. The case was designed so that the bullet sits higher, intruding into the case as little as possible into the cartridge case. Hornady's Superformance ammo is an example. The way I look at it they are ballistic twins. You just need to decide if you prefer short action or long action, and see what's more easily available in your neck of the woods. All said, if you’re a fan of .264 caliber bullets, I don’t think you can go wrong with the Swede, Creedmoor, or .260 Remington. I could never understand why people get so wound up in their caliber wars. At the end of the day, the game you harvest isn’t going to tell the difference between the three. And for those who argue it was developed as a target round and blah, blah blah, shouldn't be used for hunting blah, blah, blah get over yourselves. Whenever you say that it makes you sound silly.

I think it irritates seasoned shooters who have been shooting many years and collecting data along with experience to form a very well informed opinion about various calibres and their applications, and now some "gamer" or youtube comando gos and buys a creedmoor along with some of that great ammo downloads strelok pro shoots out to 1000 yards once or twice with luck and then proceeds to think he is carlos hathcock. This is not the cartridges fault but will forever be synonymous there with, and even today if you look at shooters who own 6.5 cm 90% of them know bugger all about firearms and just bought it because its mainstream, and they will tell you its the best, but not after 1000s of rounds fired and 100's of guns owned, no just because they hear it from fellow youtube commandos.

I don't own a rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, but I do plan on rectifying that. To me, it is what the .250-3000 Savage should have been from the beginning. I used the .250 Savage a lot while hunting the Central Coast of California during the blacktail season and also for hunting pigs in the region. The rifle I used was a tang-safety M-77 Ultralight. One of the things about the .250 was that its 1.912" case length and resulting overall length gave me some latitude to compensate for throat erosion of the rifle with my bullet seating die, as the rounds at standard OAL dimension didn't take up all the mag well room in my short-action Ruger M-77. I had that rifle for 35 years and shot the piss out of it during that time because it was so much fun to shoot, with negligible recoil and mild report. I always used 117-120 grain bullets in it. As the years passed by and the round count went up, I could just back of the seating stem to compensate. To me, the 6.5 Creedmoor seems like it offers everything I like about the .250 Savage, with the added bonus of longer-lasting brass that isn't unobtainum, and the capacity to better serve me on an elk hunt, if I ever go on another one.

My first deer rifle given to me by my dad was a model 99a Savage in 250-3000. That was 1971 and I was 7yrs old, I still have and use that rifle. Deer, hogs, coyotes have all fallen to that rifle. I was also raised along the east side of the central coast mountains. I haven't found an animal yet that could tell me the difference between the 250 or a 6.5 Creedmore. My biggest whitetail to date, a 140 inch buck fell to the 250, everything I ever shot with the 250 never went more than a few steps. I was also taught at an early age how to "hunt"! If I want to go shooting I'll go to the range, to go hunting means to get close (300yds) or closer. It shows respect for the life you are about to take.

Well the hype of the 6.5 Creedmoor being the second coming contributes to dislike or more not wanting to listen to people drone on about it justifying that what they bought is better. Reminds of the long standing Ford vs Chevy debate. Personally, for short actions, I already had 6.5-284 Win and 6.5-47 Lapua before 6.5 Creedmoor existed and used them both in 1,000 yard competition. For 100-130 grain Bullets, I use the 6.5x47 Lapua and for 140 grain plus Bullets, I use the 6.5-284. As mentioned, I also use the 6 Dasher and for lousy wind days, have a 284 Win for 180 grain Bullets and my own variant of a 300 Norma Mag for 210 to 230 grain Bullets.

I think the 6.5 creedmoor makes good sense and I don't get the hate. For deer and hog do you prefer a lighter 125 partition at 2900 or the heavier 140 partition at 2600/2700 ? Also what about the 156 Barnes or the traditional 160 RN they use in Europe with the 6.5x55. What about the 6.5x55 Swede for hunting? I'm coming from the fun at range and hunting perspective not a competitor. Thanks great video 👍

I'm waiting for the 7mm Creedmoor LOL. But actually like the 7mm-08's little extra energy/weight bullet options, but until I start reloading, at least in Kansas Bass Pro has one option for 7m-08 and about 14 or so 6.5 Creedmoor options on the shelf. Don't like following the sheep in life, however economy of scale/market success has its advantages that are sometimes not wise to ignore.

The point is that it doesn't do anything that a whole bunch of other calibers don't already do. I don't have anything against the 6.5 Creedmore, I just don't understand what it really brings to the table... Maybe it's just a new round to get people to spend money on, but as I said, it doesn't bring anything new to the table.
@desertdogoutdoors1113

If you watch the video....you will see that it did bring something to the table for F-class target shooters that needed to get past the limitations of the 308 case; which is why it was invented (it was not invented for hunting). It instantly got popular, but also quickly faded out of the competitive shooting world in favor of the fast 6mm's. Today, its found more in hunting and tactical rifle applications than in F-class competition. It does the same thing as the 260 and 6.5 Swede, but is much easier to load for and is now much more common than the other 6.5's.

@denisleblanc4506

Personally I think the hate comes from the fact that when you go to your local gunship, you will find a selection of Creed ammo rivalling 308 for considerably less money. Gives you the impression you've been overpaying for decades. Then you add the hype. The 7mm-08 is a youth or women caliber but the Creed is a low recoiling cartridge that allows you to keep your sight on target or see the impact. The target reputation of the Creed all of a sudden convinced hunters they could ethically shoot game at longer ranges. Like you said, there are several calibers that don't recoil more, kill as effectively and all that. So I was never that impressed by it. Like you said, it is the result of masterful marketing, great timing with the explosion of long range shooting, and great support from all manufacturers sadly at the expense of older just as efficient and deadly cartridges. It worked and everyone was happy. You can't sell the same rifle successfully forever, but introduce a new caliber and it gets a second life on the market. Sad but its the American way.
@locarnese5598

I think the hate comes from the cartridge being overly hyped--just like so many other crazes and fads often have an equal amount of passionate detractors. As a professional in the firearms industry, rifle shooter, handloader, hunter, etc., I know that the 6.5 CRDMR is a superbly-engineered, well-balanced round; but it's becoming like an overly-popular tune, clichéd and annoying after hearing it so many times.

I've been really curious about the 6.5 CM as maybe fitting the bill of jack of all trades (but master of none) that might work out well for me. I've got my 30-06 and my dad's philosophy was always 30-06 will do it all. That's fairly true, but my wife hates shooting it! Rarely do we go elk hunting, so a 6.5 CM would work out well for deer or just having fun practicing long range shooting. It would even work on elk if you make sure you have a good shot and weren't too far out. Thanks for making this vid, it's given me a lot to think about. I think a local range rents these so I might need to get my wife out there and try it out.

@@desertdogoutdoors1113 the fact that hornady uses a doppler radar in their bullet developement they can fine tune to the minutest detail to get every possible ounce of performance out of it. Thats just not true with older calibers. Yes the 30 cal has been around for forever but its old technology, its old design. A bullet cant be too much different in shape from one caliber to the next but the fact we can now watch a bullet its entire flight means we can go with say a 1.25" projectile and give it a .024" boat tail(just example no idea if its an actual option lol) and it doesnt stabilize until 85 yards then they go to .030" boat tail and it stabilizes at 30 yards but has too much draft and loses 95fps then they go to .027" boat tail and the bullet stabilizes at 40 yards but doesnt lose the 95fps then they can either label it as a longer range bullet or go back to the drawing board and redesign the ogive or make a slightly deeper cannelure and nail it. I agree 100%, a bullet of the same weight and velocity will do pretty much the same amount of damage if they are both HP or SP or whatever. The thing newer cartridges do for us as hunters is make a bullet faster without sacrificing accuracy. Anybody who says a creedmoor cant be deadly passed 400 yards is simply wrong, whether misinformed or their head is stuck in the past. When its dead nuts the 6.5 outperforms the .308 at distance and holds its own and in some cases matches it at closer ranges. My brother is a .30 cal fan and wont give anything else a chance. He shot my creed and i seen the flame start to ignite then he quickly tried to reason it and smother it out but he knows the creed is a mean round. It takes performance that a .30 cal gives at 200 yards and stretches it out to 400 yards, same devastating impact. I love the .30-30 and .30-06, its what i was raised on but you cant deny the .264 as a contender and even passes them up past 500 yards. You wont find a 500 yard shot where im at but its there with the same up close performance. 603 yards pass through on an elk speaks for its own. I have seen more deer dropped in its shadow with the creed than i have a 300win. A lot of times the .300 is too much and cant expand in time to do much permanent cavitation damage. I watched jason aldean have to put 2 rounds in a deer on tv, it was 7mm mag or 300win one. Hunting grounds uses a creed and said it was one of his absolute favorite rifles and it was a budget rifle just like i got. Lunkerstv(former army sniper) said if he had to choose only one caliber it would be the 6.5 creedmoor. I feel thats my case rested lol a military sniper saying its a good round should end all arguments haha

Only problem I see with the 6.5 CM as a hunting cartridge is that it does nothing that many older cartridges can do sometimes less. I'm sure it is great as a target cartridge. As far as the accuracy benefits of a cartridge design , it has minimal effect for hunting rifle accuracy. The 270 and 30-06 smokes the 6.5 CM. If I was into the 6.5 caliber , 260 Remington or 6.5-06 would be my choice.

A good rule many hunters need to recall, take a reasonable shot with a rifle and round you are comfortable with and enjoy!

Desert Dog Outdoors well I talked to a lot of people at work who sold theirs and switched back to .270. I’m sure it was ammo related but I honestly didn’t want to take the chance. I heard that you had 2 ammo options: ones that icepick at any range and those that explode on impact. I’m sure that was not exactly true but when it came to putting my money on the line I wanted to go with what I knew. And those weren’t the only reasons I also wanted to share common ammo with my Dads rifle and shoot what I knew I could find locally since I don’t hand load. I have no issues with the caliber, if you like it that is perfectly fine. It just didn’t seem to suit my needs.

I have hunted with many different round like 30-30, 2506, 3006, 7mm, 243, 270 and others and for hunting it’s mostly personal preference in my opinion. My other creed is a Ruger Precision and to get into the long range game I think that’s a tough combo to beat. The high bc’s make it easier to get on target at 1000+ yards and there are so many choices for bullet and powder. I shoot hornady 143 ELDX for hunting and long range fun. People can say what they want but this is a great lower recoil round that is a lot of fun to play with.

My three favorite center fire rifle cartridges are 223Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor, 30-06. Nominally 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5. Those three will cover North America just fine. I never trust a cartridge that wouldn't be practical for use in an air cooled machine gun! (6.5 Creedmoor gets a pass because it's an analog for 6.5x55mm Sweedish Mauser). The power of the 30-06 was set up as the most powerful rifle the average American, given training and practice, could shoot well. I'm just not interested in rifles with more recoil and/or significantly less bore life than say a 9 pound 30-06 firing full power ammunition. I like to plink a lot with my hunting rifles including a lot of three position unsupported shooting. Recoil, barrel heat and mirage and impact shift are a real pain during practice and need to be minimized. There are plenty of other cartridges that could also fill the bill but these are my favorite especially when you take into account the above and ammo availability .

Fundamentally it is a product improvement just slightly over all of the common commercial cartridges. It has a flatter trajectory and lower recoil than a .308 or a .30-06 (and fits into short action receivers which the .30-06 and .270 cannot). It has more power than cartridges like the .243 so it has more versatility for game. It's been put together to combine all of the positive attributes of certain cartridges (low recoil, decent bullet weight range, short action receiver capability, very good trajectory and sectional density, etc.).

My dad shot a texas whitetail buck in 1969 at a really long range from a tree stand. We were sitting in the stand and he was planning on shooting a deer in a clearing created by a wash that ran into a creek that ran through the ranch owned by my uncle. We were expecting a deer to enter the clearing and our longest line of sight was 150yds. My dad just happened to look over the tops of the trees way to the south over the creek and into a hay meadow and see a buck meandering along a fence line. My dad estimated 600 yds. Made a swag hold over with his Weaver fixed 4x scope atop his 6.5x55mm Sweedish Mauser. He fired, the Buck took a few steps and crumpled. Nosler 140gr partition bullseye in the vitals perfect broadside aspect. A few years ago I measured the distance on Google earth it was 687 yards. My dad must have missed a little high.. I wouldn't consider this an ethical shot today but it was a different time different generation.

Never understood the hate , over hyped maybe but it is what it is. Seen it in action on deer and it works, personally have 308 2506 and 270 so does not fit any need for me. They all can out shoot my ability so that's not a selling point to me plus I value getting close as close as possible not how far I can shoot. Just my 2 cents that ain't worth much to anyone but me.

I agree it's super easy to load for. The Savage axis I load for my wife is a sub moa round in most of the loads working up. I was amazed.

A buddy of mine bought a Ruger American 6.5 Creedmoor rifle and he loves it. I shot it, and ya I thought it was spot on.

Me too, my buddy bought one on sale and that Ruger American is very accurate, I struggled with the cheap scope, but still got a respectable group.

I personally don’t care about 1 cartridge over another. People have argued about that subject and will till the end of time. When they start talking about how far they have killed animals at with what ever latest and greatest laser beam cartridge on a moonless night and 20 mph wind that varies. But wait that’s not all they were forced to go offhand because the animal was ready to move. We all have heard it. Hell they are on u tube videos. On paper you shoot out as far as you want to. BUT I want to hear ethical hunters who fought to get close enough to make a shot clean. Or better tell me about the hard shot when you broke a French kiss with animal to get enough distance to have a clean shot. Thank you all for allowing me a small rant. I shot and hunted for 40 years and still would If I could.

My deer have been taken at less than 200 yards -I use an -06. overkill even with 150 gr bullets at that rage - lots of energy left after a pass thru - and even fairly remote farmland frequently puts you close enough to habitations to give me pause thinking of a hunting bullet passing thru and heading cross-country. I've started loading reduced load rounds for close hunting wth the -06 - bullets designed for the 30-30, at relatively low velocity( but still appropriate for the bullet and game.

I own one. This rifle is no joke and neither is my ammo for it. Great video. Respect to the creator of this rifle.
