I'm so sad there has to be a caveat on recommending the old bodice ripper books these days. I love them with their high tension stakes and often times non-con tropes. For decades nobody had a problem distinguishing between escapism and reality and I'm not sure why now there is so much policing and shaming going on around women's sexuality and what we're allowed to like in books.

I 2nd these recommendations and also add the Kleypas book “Dreaming of You”. Derek Craven is a very unusual (the cockney accent alone!) and unforgettable hero. If you like podcasts, I also recommend “Fated Mates” co-hosted by Sarah Maclean and Jen Prokop. The 1st season is all about Kresley Cole’s paranormal “Immortals After Dark” series but the second season is about all the books that made them romance readers and they talk about Kleypas and the authors you mentioned in your video a lot. They have a whole episode on “Lord of Scoundrels”. They are hilarious and bawdy and I think a must listen for anyone who adores romances.

I always thought I didn't like historicals but since so many romance booktubers have been reading them, I started trying some out, and BOY OH BOY DO I HAVE A RECOMMENDATION FOR YOU!!! I really think you'd like "Seduced By A Highlander" by Paula Quinn. It's enemies to lovers where the hero and the heroine are from enemy clans because of the murder of their uncle/father respectively. But Tristan, the hero, meets the heroine Isobel and at first doesn't realize who she is, then when he does find out, vows to reconcile the feud between their families. She is determined to hate him because his father killed hers, but is super attracted to him. And a big part of the book is set at Isobel's home where you meet her brothers who are all just so precious! Besides the romance, there are themes of grief, and healing, and men opening up about their emotions, and I loved it so much! I highly recommend it!

I much more prefer non politically correct reads. People live outwardly their superficial lives. But, if you peel back the layers you’ll find every one and their families have their particular secrets, fears, needs, wants and sins that they try to keep locked up from public scrutiny. Give me some fluff but give me real and if real be dark, so be it.
