The most common BPD triggers are relationship triggers. Many people with BPD have a high sensitivity to abandonment and can experience intense fear and anger, impulsivity, self-harm, and even suicidality in relationship events that make them feel rejected, criticised or abandoned👍

@@stevendurrant1724 the reason it is called borderline is because one of the symptoms that people with BPD exhibit is a borderline or mild psychosis, i.e., distorted perceptions and cognitions. Thanks for this! I hate having to tell people I'm not a monster. I've worked very hard to get to where I am. Another myth that I find damaging is that women with BPD are bad moms. There is even research supporting this but I don't think it's fair. I had people tell me I would damage my kids and when I had my first child I was scared that I would be reported to child services even though I hadn't done anything. I have 2 kids now and I'm a very competent and loving mom. I actually use DBT skills with my kids because DBT skills are life skills and knowing them will support them in being a healthy adult.
@simplicity6079

Every person is different so of course you can't apply this "myth" to everyone and I also believe that you can be a good mother with bpd if you work hard on yourself but theres also a lot of truth in this. I know a lot of people with bpd who really never should've had kids. I know my mother shouldn't have and for sure I know I will never have kids because i would definetly be a bad mother and it would be selfish 🤷♀️ and a lot of people are but of course everybody is different, takes a lot of work to make it work I think.

You mention that the attachment component of BPD is unrelated to bipolar disorder. As someone with bipolar, I would say this is not accurate. I have bpd and until I was more self aware I was very very manipulative and emotionally abusive. I think people with bpd don’t do this with maliciousness it’s always triggered by fear of abandonment. The thought of abandonment to a bpd is like physical death, it’s soul destroying, when this is triggered bpds will be manipulative to stop this feeling.

It is a bad feeling to realize when you get diagnosed with any disorder. (Actually, it can feel good at first because it feels like now you can start doing something about it, but I mean specifically when you think about how your brain is actually working against you). But SO much worse than that is the feeling you get off you hear someone just casually say something like that about "just run away as fast as you can from people like that (like you)". It's pure torture to hear that and I do wish the so-called "normal" people would find the empathy to realize that.

@@_just_TK You know, many of their exes aren't even diagnosed with BPD or any mental illness… Their ex could have just been a jerk who did bad things. The other thing I find interesting is that some people who think their ex is crazy because of xyz exhibit more symptoms of various mental illnesses than the ex they're criticizing. Not always. But, it's a red flag if they label all their exes as crazy or witches and they're the common denominator.

BUT, we are the “toxic” parent. If we have moments of a hard time getting it under control, if only for short periods of time, YOU tell kids to blame their “toxic” parent. This is all well & good UNTIL children are involved. You have NO SUPPORT for the parent, you tell kids to blame their parents & walk away- forever if necessary. How about teaching people that BPD does not make you a bad parent???? No matter how much help you get or how hard you work on having good relationships, we are the FIRST to be blamed when a kid says they didn’t feel emotionally uplifted. This is a joke!!

BPD is one of the most misunderstood of the Cluster B personality disorders. There's been a lot of interesting empirical research in the last decade that has pretty altered our understanding of BPD. I'm glad Kati mentions #3 - BPD isn't super rare. Takeaway: in your lifetime, you will come across someone with BPD. Be informed/prepared, it's not easy to identify. Re #4 (& #5), I disagree with Kati that it's a good idea to be in a romantic relationship with someone who has BPD. BPD recovery takes YEARS. That's a long time. And many (most?) never recover (recover to the point where they no longer exhibit symptoms/behavior that meet the criteria in the DSM5). Recovery from any serious disorder, e.g., any Cluster A-C disorder, drug addiction, etc., requires 100% of someone's attention to be successful. And recovery is 100% an inside job. Second, not that abuse is intentional, but partners of people with BPD (or any Cluster B personality disorder) often end up with serious emotional abuse, CPTSD. Last, I do want to agree with Kati's general mission that we must not stigmatize anyone with mental health disorders. People can and should have friendships with someone with BPD. But not a romantic relationship.

1.4% is in fact a low percentage thus making it a small minority. Yes, when you take into consideration 4.6m make up that 1.4% it may seem like a large number. It is not. The United States is about 329m people. The United States is also a geographically massive country. It alone is larger than the whole continent of Europe. The state of Mississippi is the size of Korea. We are talking about a massive massive country. So, within that context, given how spread out the United State population is in conjunction with its geography and baseline population. 4.6m is not a lot. The USA has a population that is almost half that of the entire continent of Europe. The US population is 13X the continent of Australia The USA population is almost the same as all of the continent of South America The single country of the USA has populations bigger or almost equitable to 5 of the 7 continents on Earth. We are not talking about a small pool of people. It is unwise to take a data point and remove it from the context in which it was written.

Hi Kati I know this is an old video but I would love to see a part 2 and would add these myths: People with BPD are not violent. We do not harm others - just ourselves (as a result of our BPD symptoms - not saying anyone with BPD has never physically hurt anyone else). People with BPD are not psychotic or dangerous. People with BPD are not crazy. People with BPD are not controlling. People with BPD are not narcissists (although we can have some narcissistic traits we fail to meet the main criterion for NPD which is lack of empathy - we are actually some of the most empathatic people you will ever meet.) Thanks again for doing all of this work to help so many of us with our mental health struggles. I am so grateful to have found your social sites.

I agree with much of what you say, but not all. My ex-wife had bpd and she was extremely abusive toward.....physically, mentally and emotionally. This got so bad I wanted to die. Her actions were evil and she was never held accountable for her actions. She claimed, at one point during a home visit from our congregation elders, that as my wife she had the right to treat me the way she did. She was abandoned a lot as a child, her father died when she was 5 and she was raped a couple times when she was a teenager. I recognize that she has abandonment issues. However, this was no reasonable excuse for the way she abused me. I took marriage very seriously and I still do; so, I still stuck to her. It was so bad that when she cheated on me (I'm not clear about the final number of men) I was grateful, since I strongly believe that infidelity should be the only reason to divorce and remarry. I got PTSD as a result of those 4 1/2 years and I haven't heard from or had any contact from my then 5-yr-old son for the last 13 years. I'm trying to not hate her but she stole so much from me. So yea, not all BPD people are victims of their situation

What’s not talked about enough, is the BPD symptom of not feeling like in reality. It’s exhausting, tiresome and depressing. It’s a hazy feeling, like the high you get when you smoke a bong almost an hour later when you’re close to being burnt but prolonged for life. A dream, like the movements of my body are slightly delayed by 0.1 milliseconds.

I'm always surprised to consider that BPD isn't that rare; thing is, I suppose (indeed I'm no expert), it's because BPD has so many expressions that we might think: 'hm no, this person has certainly not BPD', refering to how we live with it. I also have BPD and been recently introduced into a therapy group, and was also surprised because we all share more or less same issues, yet we express it in so many different ways. I'm definitly 'quiet' type, and at first I rejected the BPD diagnosis because I didn't fit into the 'angry type' false stereotype that is so widely spread. Anyway excuse my poor English and I wish anyone reading a nice day :))

Thank you so so much for this video. One of my best friends has BPD, and the myths surrounding it are aggravating to put it lightly. Another one that they have heard a disturbing amount of times, even from mental health professionals is...I'm gonna put a TW on this one for anyone reading along... . . . . . . . . . . . . that people with BPD almost always end up killing themselves, that it is inevitable and mental health professionals shouldn't attempt to treat them because of this. They have heard that several times and it's incredibly damaging. I think it kind of goes with the last one you listed, that "they can't get better". If you end up doing a part 2, I would love to hear you talk about this myth!!! Thanks again!

I once heard that someone with BPD will do awful things to people in retaliation for perceived abandonment or whatever perceived slight. Example: someone had an argument with their roommate, and replaced her shampoo with Nair. My mom, who has a Master's in psychology said people with BPD tend to do things like that, but this was said back in the late 90s. Is that outdated information?

Hi Kati I am the 18 year old child of a mother with complex ptsd, that has caused her to become a toxic parent. My father is mentally unstable and cannot care for us adequately. Both are emotional abusers, to this day and have in my childhood, caused minor physical abuse to my older brother and I. They are (finally) divorcing and I will most likely have to live with my mother, and I would like to know, is it selfish of me to want to get out of there as quickly as possible, using a bursary to back up my studies, instead of staying to support and protect my two younger siblings? The abuse has slowed down, now being only emotional attacks that I can somewhat deal with, but I just feel like my mother's presence and influence suffocates me. Heeelp
