I'm in the Boston market. John Henry, famously of criminal mind and now frugality much in the same vein as John Fisher, wants us to pay upwards of $330 per year for NESN, our local RSN. Needless to say I'm not doing that and finding 'alternative' ways to watch the Red Sox. We're at a break point in this conversation because not only am I getting turned off by ticket prices and TV prices, I'm also very bummed out with the incessant advertising that is EVERYWHERE. And sure...ads on the mound aren't getting in the way of the game and for as much as I hate them, neither are the ads on the helmets or sleeves (and I *do* hate them). We're now experiencing green screen problems with ads behind home plate and camera angles that are affecting the video feed of both the pitcher AND batter. So what do we do as fans? I'm tired of fighting it. I'm tired of paying a TON of money to enjoy something that used to be pretty damn accessible. For me, I'm happy to just turn the dial to something that won't disappoint or get back to doing my 'trade' (being a musician). It's quite seriously just not worth it anymore. All this video is telling me is that shit is about to get even more expensive. We've talked a ton about attendance at postseason games. Great. People are showing up. But are we seeing sellouts all the time? Can families afford to go to regular season games, let alone postseason games? We've been priced out. Baseball is for the beautiful people with boat loads of extra cash. Again, I'm exhausted. The business of the game won. The only way I can see them finally taking a "L" is when they start to feel the pressure of "regular" people not showing up in droves like we used to. That won't be for some time, though. There's just no point. This diatribe is also coming off of a loss last night by our Dodgers that made them look silly and lifeless, just about ready for yet another early exit and entry into a long off-season of mixed drinks and golf. Fucking baseball...

Brodie. Good stuff. Question. When you say the Twins reported $50m in revenue is that strictly rights money or does it include inventory within the broadcast owned by the team? For example, it has been rumored that Diamond pays the Columbus Blue Jackets about $2m a year for rights, but the team owns about 30% of the advertising inventory that they then package into their sponsorship deals. If they sell a $2m sponsorship package that includes arena signage, promotions and spots durning the broadcast, how is that accounted for in the team’s reported totals? It would seem those deals could continue on a streaming platform however, there would be diminished viewership that could effect the overall price. Hope you reply.

These are all just symptoms of a much bigger problem. The Problem: Everything is hyperinflated in baseball, and sports in general. Root Sports has lost the regional broadcast rights to both the Portland Trail Blazers & the Seattle Kraken the past few months as both teams did deals with their local ABC (Blazers) & NBC (Kraken) stations in an effort to increase viewership of their games especially after Comcast moved Root Sports to its highest priced package. With more people cutting the cord & no other teams (especially during the winter months & when there are no Mariners games) willing to fill the void left behind by the Kraken & Trail Blazers, the Mariners may have no choice but to shut down Root Sports if they want to stop losing money even if it means they have no control over their broadcasts.

I don't see MLB making the same revenue with individual team streams that they got from local broadcasters. One of the other factors that isn't discussed much here is the fact that the local broadcasters operate networks with other programming and revenue streams e.g. digital content and use MLB broadcasts to plug their other offerings during the game, so they can somewhat subsidize the cost of the broadcast by making revenues off of their other streams. What does MLB do when they are their own product and tries to offer say a Cleveland Guardians monthly/annual TV channel package? They have to fill the rest of the broadcast day and the entirety of the more than 200 days less playoffs (if applicable) that the team isn't playing. What do they fill it with to entice a viewer to want to watch it on say December 2 at 3:00 in the afternoon?

But do you have to have full programming? As an example in 2011, when an NHL team returned to Winnipeg, they had a part time specialty channel. They showed all the games that were not on national TV, 65 I think it was. So every month there was a $10 charge for the channel if you wanted it, in season only so around 6 months. Pre and post game shows and that was it, the rest of the time the channel showed nothing. But it was partnered with TSN (ESPN equivalent) in Canada. It only lasted one season though because TSN went from 1 to 5 channels the following season for more regional coverage of their sports teams. But I don't think a MLB team will get anything near , what they have seen in the past with this type of channel arrangement.

This is why "popup" channels are becoming more popular in usage for the local broadcasts. And MLB does not need to offer a dedicated channel to stream live events considering it just makes the local feed available on MLBTV to the individual team's package subscribers. Nor does MLB need a dedicated channel for non-live events. Much of that content is not high in viewership but can be offered in an on-demand portal on the team's website, as done today, that is if it wants to add exclusive content to enhance the live game bundle subscription. Otherwise, social media channels will show that content instead.

@@Actionronnie : if you want to get to the same revenue levels that you did when you leased the rights to broadcast networks, yes, you probably do. Look at Brodie's math at the 8:40 mark. 250,000 subscribers at $200 a pop gets to $50 million, and that doesn't even take into consideration the expenses associated with running the channel that the broadcasters previously absorbed. Using the model you proposed, you'd need more than triple the subscribers to pull that off. Even factoring in supply and demand economics, that's most likely not happening. It works for the NHL because the NHL is primarily a gate-driven league, whereas MLB tends to be more diversified in its streams.

Putting an entire sport behind a subscription paywall is a great way to NEVER grow your fanbase. Casual fans won't pay. New fans won't discover the sport. And eventually die hard fans will die off. Major League Soccer has completely disappeared since moving to subscription TV. On the other hand, I love that the White Sox (and Bulls, Blackhawks) are now free on over-the-air broadcast TV

The problem with MLB is the cost of cable TV and ticket prices parking, food, etc. I know that the high price of going to a game or watching on cable TV will hurt all sporting events. I do not mind going to games, but I am old and will have problems with walking and spending hours in traffic and other problems. I believe that all sporting events will have a problem with younger fans because of the high costs. I spend over thousand dollars attending a Dodger game with my wife because she does wants to sit behind home plate or will not go to the game.

Did you forget the Angels? Not really an issue, as they have been pretty forgettable these past few seasons and I wouldn't blame the MLB or Diamond/Ballys wanting to ignore them. This is the big Los Angeles market and the Angels cheapie owner needs to put a contending team on the field if he wants to get a good audience from the surrounding Orange County and Riverside/San Bernardino areas (TV or attendance at the games), but he seems adverse to any financial risk and wants someone else to pay for it.

The rich will get richer, which means we'll see the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and (unless they REALLY screw up) Mets in the World Series every year, buying players from the other teams (which will need the money). Just like in the old days (remember the Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, and the Philadelphia A's.) If baseball isn't dead as a sport now, this will definitely kill it.

You know Bally could have made some more money by, you know, negotiating carriage deals with literally any TV provider that isn't Spectrum or DirecTV. Also these teams weren't spending money in the first place, so they're just going to use it as an excuse to spend less.

MLBTV is already offering out of market deals with each in market team as an add on. The problem with any Amazon or Apple type deal is those "streamers" have significant restricted payouts if subscriber counts are not reached. And since MLBs streaming is already being run now by ESPN, unless MLB sublicenses those games out, they'll likely keep everything under the MLBTV platform.
