youve really progressed! i had my first skating lesson on Friday, and I learnt how to do forward swizzles and a two foot glide. They still need a lot of practice because i have a dominant foot from ballet. but we're slowly getting there. your progression videos give me a lot of hope! :)

Thank you :) So excited to hear that! Swizzles are a great inside edge exercise and they strengthen those inner thigh/core muscles. That's normal for most skaters too, I think you'll find ballet training will help you a lot on your journey ;) Glad to hear that and all the best for you lessons!! xx

Imone!OnIce back again haha. Started learning how to skate backwards, and am also doing chasses! Do you have any tips for how to be more confident on the ice? Broad question but although i am definitely a lot better at skating, I still feel that wobbly-ness on ice. Will that just go with more practice? When did you stop feeling like that or do you still get like it? sorry for all the questions lol xx
@ImoneOnIce

Congratulations! Skating backwards was such a big milestone for me so I'm really happy for you! The wobbliness took me a while to get over, even now somedays I get on to the ice and feel a little shaky until I warm up! Practice definitely helped my confidence go up and I started to wobble less and less. When you're practicing stroking or slaloms for example: press deep into the ice, get your balance on each foot strong and hear the scrape of the ice when you do your slaloms/swizzles, a good warm up does wonders too ;) Don't apologise for the questions, I used to ask the same questions too!

Lol there's so many people at my rink after I take my class for general skating and I can barely practice and I'm always having a close encounter with someone or the hockey players that go HAM or a freaking kid. I'm just like today's task DON'T KILL ANYONE'S CHILD! lmaooo but it's just SO frustrating becuz it's TOO PACKED. Then I end up hurting myself trying to not hurt someone else. But great progress

@ImoneOnIce
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you :D When I started, I had no idea where to even begin with skating and private lessons/getting my own boots were ridiculously expensive. Luckily my rink offered group lessons for beginners of all ages during the weekends for a cheaper price than privates. The group lessons kind of introduced me to the world of skating and how skills were learned and progressed. I think having some lessons to get you started would help give you some direction (and avoid building any bad technique) but KZitem and other skaters at the rink are helpful teachers too until you get comfortable on the ice (i.e. be able to do swizzles, turns, one foot glides all forward and backward) :) x

I'm not hating or anything but when you're doing your spirals keep the leg on the ice completely straight and it will help you make your spirals last longer and make it more aestheticly pleasing to the eye(in my opinion at least) Also keep your body more bent to get your opposing leg higher! But make sure you're not staring at the ground, keep your head up

@@ImoneOnIce :) Also I'm not sure if you have this or not but you should get a turn board/ spin board! They help with all sorts of spins! (Scratch spins, camel, 1 foot etc) They're meant for dancers which include figure skaters. I have one and they help a lot.!! Also if you haven't already please do a what's in my skating bag vid or skaters essentials or something like that!!

Wow! Amazing progress! I started adult skating lesson a month ago as my 35 year birthday gift to myself. I had zero knowledge about skating and still figuring out my forward stroking, one-foot glide and backward swizzles . XD. How many hours do you practice per week? Any secret on your fast progress?
@ImoneOnIce
6 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on starting skating!! I'll be honest, up until month 3 I was pretty much only doing basic edge work, it was after month 4 that I really started trying spins, jumps etc. I found the swizzles and one foot glides difficult then but I believe I progressed faster in new skills because I practised the basics a lot! One skater at my rink tells me to practise what I'm not good at twice as hard haha. I skate once a week for around 3 hours ( I wish I could go more often though!).

Imone!OnIce Wow! Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and practice hours. It is very encouraging! I am definitely learning very slow but I really like practicing the basics even with all the kids and good skaters sweeping by me fast. Haha. I am a scientist with a lot of patience. Skating feels as challenging as getting a PhD. I will continue enjoying it! Best wishes for your learning and practicing! Look forward to new videos from you in the months years to come! XD

Hey! i love your videos, thank you for sharing. I am curious how much time you have spent off-ice training in addition to your ice time. Also, how frequently you do private lessons, i'm trying to decide on that now.

Thank you! Glad to hear you like them :) Up until month 5 I didn't really do a lot of off-ice training but from then on and especially after the 1 year mark I started doing off ice weekly (1-2 sessions). Private lessons vary a bit for me, generally I have one every two weeks.

really awesome to see your fast progress! what knee pads do you use? I'm having a hard time finding ones that are less stiff
@ImoneOnIce
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) Funny thing is, I made them! Sounds dodgy I know... But I found that the store knee pads didn't conform well to my knees and like you said they were super stiff. So I got dense sponge/foam, gel pads to make the padding and cut up an old sock to hold it together and slide it onto my leg like a brace. Mind you I don't fall much on my knees anymore but it does protects from the nasty bruises I used to get when I did.

Thank you! I'm in the process of stretching out my hip muscles more so I don't have to bend my knees so much. Apparently closed hips are a thing that may hinder this move... But regular stretching seems to help and puts less strain on the knees for the spread eagle :)

Imone!OnIce Can I ask you a question about your skates? I want to buy one but I am not sure about which stiffness rating I should go for. I want to have a pair I can wear for a few years. but if I can start simple jumps in a year should I go slightly higher than the beginner level boots (stiffness 30) to get the stiffness 45 boots? Do you mind sharing your experience? My local pro shop told me a stiffness rating 30 boots can get me to free style 2 but that is not what I read on line. So I am confused. Thanks!
@ImoneOnIce

(Note: I'm not an expert so please don't take my word for this advice!) But in my opinion your boot choice depends on your weight, foot shape, how often you skate and yes, the difficulty of the elements you're working on. Yes it'd be great if we could buy new skates each time we levelled up but shelling out that kind of money isn't so easy (for me at least haha). The higher the stiffness, usually the longer it takes to break in and if the stiffness is too high for your feet to work with you may be in a lot of pain trying to break them in. I currently have Jackson Mystiques which entry-level skates which apparently aren't stiff enough for waltz jumps and yet I'm starting free skate 4 elements on them... The structure/padding of my boots is still strong (I skate once a week) though I do intend to get new boots soon as I am moving onto jumps that require higher stiffness/support!If you haven't started single jumps yet I would suggest the level 30s but again it depends on you. Good luck, hope this helps!
