Thank you for producing a wonderfully detailed and informative review of this oven 👏🏻 . I especially enjoyed how it is a ‘long term’ review, with legitimate pros and cons 🙏🏻 . I was on the fence before about buying it, but now I’m essentially sold 😂 (three cakes in one bake session? Goodness. That alone makes it worth it). I also very much appreciate the cleaning steps at the end, something I wish more KZitemrs would include.

I was an electrician for many years and 1800 watts is pushing it for anyone with 15amp circuits in older homes. I think pre-1960 home kitchens are 15amp. Newer homes have 20amp circuits which is plenty as long as other things aren’t running at the same time. Even 20amp could trip if your microwave or mixer was used while this oven is in full use. These days they have much more sensitive gfci breakers required on everything, and they can trip just by turning things on. I enjoyed your video and I just ordered my new power hungry everything oven today!

Thank you! At this point, I think it must have been a sensitive GFCI breaker. It still hasn't happened since, and that oven is the only thing that gets to stay plugged in on the counter out of sheer convenience. Hope you enjoy your power-hungry oven! That made me laugh lol

Do you think using this power hungry oven could benefit from plugging into a larger residential UPS for people that may be in a situation where this could be an issue? Would it help in a case with RV applications? I have a power hungry brother printer (DCP-7065N) that I have plugged into a Cyberpower 1500 VA AVR and it makes the UPS beep and lights flicker every time the printer prints. I am not sure how many amp service is in the room where this is located but I am running other devices (computer with 850W power supply) on the same circuit along with other devices as well. Not sure if the UPS helps with the printer issue, but it never has tripped the breaker and the printer functions fine.

Wow. A very thoughtful and thorough review of an appliance that I love! Mine has worked flawlessly for almost two years. I always need an extra oven for hosting Thanksgiving and this one is a life saver. All of your pros and cons are spot on. I have never had it trip a breaker though. We use the “Warm” function to warm plates for things like eggs and fish. It makes a huge difference on how long those meals stay hot while one is eating them. No one likes cold fish or eggs! The top gets very warm. It helps keep dishes warm while cooking another dish in the oven. The air fry function works well but does smoke and get the oven very dirty and splattered. Thank you for the cleaning video. Another great thing is it is portable. I have taken mine to cook in the garage when I didn’t want to cook inside the house due to extreme heat and have brought it to my in laws for a big family dinner. If I was an everyday toast eater, I would get a separate toaster for sure due to the long time it takes to toast, but we are occasional toast people so no issues. Great oven. And I have no idea why I watched a review and commented when I already own one and am very pleased with it. 😅

Wow, what a glowing review! Thank you so much for your kind words; they mean a lot to me! Just in case I don't make a video on my stove and fridge soon enough before you need to upgrade, here's a quick rundown of what I have just to give you some ideas: My gas stove is from GE (model number JGB735SPSS), and I have no complaints with it! Really convenient having the center griddle and convection bake setting. We went through a few GE fridges trying to get a good one. We started with GNE27JYMFS, but the internal water dispenser was not great (hard to press, slow to dispense, and required the fridge door open the whole time) and the ice tray took up a quarter of the usable freezer space (which we probably should have realized in advance, but Costco has a GREAT return policy for appliances that it didn't matter. I felt kinda bad returning such a large/expensive item, but they were happy to take it when they learned it just wasn't for us). Then we upgraded to the GFE28GYNFS, which had a better water dispenser and ice location but was SO loud that there must have been a faulty motor somewhere. Returned that one and upgraded once more to the GE Profile (PVD28BYNFS) and LOVED that one, but the delivery guys dented it in multiple places during install 😅 Costco replaced it in about a month, and I still really love it about 18 months later-after GE sent out a repairman to diagnose why it wasn't making ice, of course lol. Super bright and roomy (enough to fit 200 cupcakes at a time!), and the autofill feature is great for filling up large drinking glasses :)

One work around for the condensation dripping on the counter top is to slide a thin cutting sheet under the front feet of the oven. The condensation will drip onto the sheet, which can be easily removed by lifting the front feet of the oven and sliding the sheet out.
@FloralApronBlog
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! That sounds like a workable solution for smaller amounts of condensation during normal use if people don't want to keep wiping down their counters :) For use during the dehydration function, I'd recommend something in a similar vein but with a lip or rim, like a large baking sheet. In my experience, the water will slosh around and spill off a flat surface, like a cutting sheet, when pulling it out (especially if you're going at it one-handed while trying to lift up the oven!).

@@Mariaruiz-jq1us I just got the mini. It's funny that they call it that because it's actually the size of a toaster oven. And it's still quite a bit larger than my Nana's ancient one. The Breville is no longer but it is deeper. Nana's can toast 2 slices of bread at a time and the Breville can toast 4. I just wanted it for toast, tuna melts, side dishes, and frozen things that say "for best results bake in oven" but I'm not preheating my oven for pizza bagels. So for me this is perfect.

Their smallest oven for under $200 does everything well. It's when companies start making them larger and adding all the other things like frying that they just don't work as an all in one. But if you want toast, reheat, oven, bagel, pizza, then the small one you can't go wrong.
@FloralApronBlog
5 ай бұрын
If the smaller one fits your needs, that's great! I was debating between the two but ended up going with the larger one because 1) I wanted to be able to use my current pans, and most of them wouldn't fit in the BOV800XL, and 2) I wanted the dehydrator and proofing functions so I didn't have to buy a dehydrator or proofing box. But yes, if you have smaller pans or don't have a use for those extra functions, the smaller one will certainly work!

I have the same oven, and it's never tripped the breaker. I agree about the toast function, and I have a toaster next to the oven, but the oven is good for toasting garlic bread. I use the air fry function for grilled cheese sandwiches and turn the sandwiches over after 3 minutes. I've never noticed any drips on the counter so had to go look. Nope, not there,, but I already had a dedicated dehydrator I use, so I've never tried it as a dehydrator. I've baked cakes that turned out fine, but the last time I baked a sheet cake, it started getting too brown, and I had to turn the heat down. I suspect it was on "Super Convection," and I should have turned that off. I still love the oven and use it daily. I rarely use my large oven.

I think you're onto something there!! I saw your comment right before I started reheating pizza last night, so I pulled the crumb tray out a bit and saw steam escaping from underneath rather than collecting on the glass! That was a great fix! I am also curious about the smell haha 😅 I will say, I've baked fish in there and left the door closed overnight. When I open the door to toast my bagel the next morning, it still smells like fish, but it doesn't transfer to the bagel (thank goodness haha). Maybe your brisket will be similar :)

It also takes a long time to reach the temperature to the desired temp. I called them and they were not very helpful. Does yours have these issues?
@FloralApronBlog
Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks so much for watching and sorry to hear that! I wouldn't say mine takes a "long" time to reach the desired temp, but it does take longer than it says it will to preheat. The manual states that when the oven beeps to notify you that it's preheated, it's only at 75% of the temperature listed on the screen! That makes a bit of a difference with finicky recipes like macarons but not with much else. If I know I'm going to be baking something sensitive, I let it continue heating up 5-10 minutes longer before adding my trays, and that seems to work well for me. I know people who have older ovens that compensate for their oven manually by raising the temp 25°F if they know it regularly runs 25°F cold, but there should be some sort of calibration you (or Breville, if you sent in the unit) could do if it came to that!

The metal guards protecting the heating elements can be cleaned somewhat, but it takes a lot of scrubbing if there's a lot of residue. Any residue on the actual heating elements burns off with the next bake, but residue tends to stay on the metal protectors for quite a few cycles. The manual says to "use extreme caution" when cleaning the quartz heating elements, so I haven't tried to clean those quite as thoroughly as the rest of the oven ;)

Thank you! I am a recipe developer that focuses largely on desserts (if you couldn't already tell haha). That's what I focused on for this video, as I'd be able to give the most honest feedback there. I've found that if an oven can bake cakes and macarons well, it will absolutely bake less fussy foods like chicken and starches with no issues, though I probably could have detailed that a little more in the video :) That said, I've used this to bake my Cajun tortilla chip-crusted tilapia recipe countless times, and it works really well for that! Unfortunately, outside of crispy chicken parmesan once in a blue moon, I don't do much baking of my chicken or beef. (Though judging by a few comments on this video, a lot of people use it for air frying chicken wings, so perhaps you'll be able to find another video showing that lol!) Thanks again for watching!

Thank you for your thorough video! I had this oven in my previous place and I used it daily for almost all meals. I liked it a lot so I am considering getting it again. I have experienced some of the drawbacks you mentioned. The steam problem was worse for me. I not only got the little drips, but also the LCD display would fog up making it harder to read most of the time. Cleaning the interior was a nightmare but that was probably mostly my fault for not attacking things immediately. But there are some parts on the interior that are not non-stick and very hard to clean. Overall though, it did everything I asked. I wonder though if there are maybe better ones out there now.

Oh, interesting about the display fogging up for you! I wonder if the humidity where you live plays a role in that-some commenters have said they haven't noticed any condensation at all, and that's the only thing I can think of. Perhaps your new place would make a difference in that. The Breville ovens are all very highly ranked on Consumer Reports-of the top 10 spots in the category, Breville fills 7 of them. I'm sure there are some other good brands out there, though, if you want to keep looking :)

I appreciate the thorough review. I just can't find the ideal air fryer toaster oven combo. Every single one has at least one thing I don't like. In the case of the Breville it's the wider footprint (because they put the controls on the side instead of the top), and because it can't cook a good piece of toast in a reasonable amount of time.
@FloralApronBlog
6 ай бұрын
I hear ya-the Breville's footprint is pretty big! I don't know that I would have willingly given up this much counter space in our old house lol Have you looked into Green Pan's Elite Convection Air Fry Oven (aff link-amzn.to/3PyMoLP)? It has the controls on the top with what looks to be a similar interior size, and while I haven't tried it myself, one of my friends likes hers. I'm hesitant about having the controls on the top because ovens tend to degrade faster when their control panels are repeatedly heated, though. My Breville gets pretty hot and heats up the cabinet above it a bit, and I can't imagine that being great for electrical components. I totally understand the need for a smaller footprint, and that design is a great way to save space; it just *may* result in a shorter lifespan. I would hope it's engineered properly so that isn't a huge issue, but again, I don't have one, so I couldn't tell you for sure. Just something to think about if you haven't already! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :)

@@FloralApronBlog You make a good point.. I was looking at another oven with the controls at the top, and some people said the buttons gets so hot you can't touch them. Yes, and it is. The outlets in my kitchen are divided between two 20-amp circuit breakers, and the Breville was the only thing plugged in at the time. (Dishwasher, disposal, microwave, and oven are all on separate circuits.) As written on-screen at 1:51, the manual recommends "operating the oven on a dedicated circuit separated from other appliances," and that's what I have been doing :) That's why I recommend older homes or homes with electrical issues get a onceover from an electrician to make sure their homes can handle it.

Hi, thank you! I address that directly at 7:30 in this video and more thoroughly at 1:01 in my unboxing video (kzitem.info/news/bejne/wpmNqpyZgJljZIo) if you haven't seen that yet! :) To add to both of those statements, I test dozens of baked recipes every month as a recipe developer. A lot of times, I'm baking small test batches to reduce food waste/costs, and it feels pretty silly to preheat my full-size oven and heat up my kitchen to bake all of six muffins, especially in the summer 😅 I really love my gas oven for larger bakes, but if I don't need the extra space for a recipe, I'd much rather pay a few cents to cover the electricity use of the Breville in the corner over the cost of natural gas to run my full-size oven in the middle of the kitchen *and* the electricity needed for my AC to cool the entire kitchen back down in the summer. Annnd, as an added bonus, this toaster oven just happens to also have dehydrate and air fry settings, so I don't have to worry about buying those appliances in the future!

I used to love that oven, but the life spam is short. After the warranty ran out the problems started….first was the door, trouble closing. Second rust spots everywhere outside, off course is brush steel. After that the screen went blank, so the reliability is awful. It looks like it's only $400 on Amazon right now, but it was on sale in the last year for $320 at Black Friday and Easter :) Like I said in the video, I haven't used the air fryer setting a whole bunch, but everything I've used the air fry setting on has been accurate and just as crispy as a regular air fryer (fries, hash browns, home-fried chicken, tater tots, etc). I'd say it's even an upgrade from the standard air fryer because the large basket means you don't have to shake the food midway through baking! I always keep the two racks in there; that's fine. I wouldn't recommend also keeping the roasting pan with its rack, the pizza pan, *and* the air fry basket in the oven while baking, as that won't leave you much room inside, and I'd assume having all that in there would change the airflow considerably. Personally, I tend to keep the roasting pan in the oven on the upper rack, then place it on the top of the oven if I want to use a different pan (or just make toast/bagels on the upper rack). Then, I keep the smaller rack for the roasting pan, the pizza pan, and the air fry basket in the cabinet below my Breville.

For the baking function do you use the same temp and time as your recipe (old recipes and regular cookbook ones) or special temp and times that the air fryer has preprogramed?
@FloralApronBlog
Жыл бұрын
I use the temperature specified in the recipe! This is essentially just another oven, so you shouldn't need to adjust any bake times or temperatures. The only time you would change the temperature and/or time would be if you are using the convection or air fry setting *instead of * the bake function. So, for example, the frozen breaded chicken we like says to bake at 375°F for 23 minutes. I normally do that, but if I want it done quicker or more crispy, I'll use the air fry setting at 375°F but only set the timer for about 17 minutes to prevent the chicken from getting overcooked (since things do cook faster on convection and air fry settings). And just for clarity: The air fryer setting isn't necessarily "pre-programmed," as it just remembers the last temp/time combo you used the time before. So you would likely have to manually adjust the temp and time each time you used it, unless you only ever air fry one thing. It's not like a "popcorn" button on a microwave where you press it and it figures it out ;) Hope that helps! :)

Overall this is a great product. I'm trying to get familiar with this device, but found a few cons. What do you think about having to plug/unplug to turn the device on/off? No option to disable the preheat option? Having to open the door to pause cooking instead of having a dedicated button?
@FloralApronBlog
8 ай бұрын
None of those things bother me personally, but we all have different preferences :) I don't mind having to unplug it to turn it completely off; as long as the heating element and fan aren't on, I consider that "off" in my book. I unplug it if we are going to be away from the house for more than a few days, but I use it so frequently during the day that the minor power draw (to keep the display on) is worth it for me. Could you explain why you'd want to disable the preheat option? Someone else mentioned that in another comment, so maybe I'm not understanding what it would mean to disable the preheat option. If I don't want to wait the 5-10 minutes for the oven to preheat, I just add my frozen meat/veggies/sides in as soon as I turn the oven on and remove 1-2 minutes from the timer. That has worked well for us so far. If you mean something different, let me know! I like that the timer automatically pauses when I open the door, since I think that makes for a more accurate bake time and accounts for a bit of the temperature difference from opening the door (especially if you're taking the time to switch trays). I can't think of a time where I've needed to pause baking but left the tray inside the oven, so a button wouldn't be helpful for me. Usually, I remove the tray from the oven to check on it, and keep it out if it's done or pop it back in if it's not. I'd love to know what you're baking that makes those last two options cons-sounds like I need to expand my horizons and see what I'm missing out on! :)

@@FloralApronBlog I think I’ve been conditioned to have an on/off button lol. I did notice the screen goes dim after non usage for a few minutes. Like you mentioned it’s a matter of preference for each person, but I’d prefer the display turned off. I personally don’t enjoy the dangling wire loose especially with kiddos around. Also, my wire doesn’t have the finger assist to easily unplug for some reason. Little jealous haha With the preheat function you found a work around what my initial concern was. I did not like waiting for the oven to heat up before putting the food inside. Currently the oven preheats and beeps when ready and then the timer would start a new countdown when it actually is cooking. Maybe it’s just a matter of me getting accustomed to how this specific oven works. One major pro is just how quiet this oven is. After using a few different functions I couldn’t believe how quiet it actually is. To the point where I almost forgot it was on.

The Breville still makes toast correctly; it just takes a long time to do so. Now that I've had the toaster oven for over a year, I've gotten used to the extra couple minutes it takes to get the toast to my desired toastiness and don't really notice it anymore. If you didn't see it, I share my trick for getting my ideal toast in the video at 3:27, and that has worked for me! There is not another product on the market (that I have researched) that has a similar interior size and nearly as many settings/functions with fast toasting, which is why I still recommend the Breville over the others despite the minor flaws. Others are good at toasting quickly, but they have hot spots that make baking a nightmare and don't have nearly as many functions (no proof, no dehydrate, no slow cook, etc). Like I say in the video, if *quick* toast is really important for you, I would recommend buying a separate toaster, then using the Breville for all other functions, as it is second to none in regards to even baking :)

I have found that the quartz heating elements themselves burn off any residue after a few bakes, so I don't bother cleaning those. I've wiped down the metal pieces protecting the quartz elements with a damp sponge in the past, but it's hard to scrub with the quartz in the way. And the only way to really get the residue off those is by scrubbing (of course lol), so I just leave it now. They also tend to burn off, but it takes longer than the quartz heating elements themselves. The metal pieces only get dirty if oil drips down onto them (in my experience, at least), so I try to keep the roasting pan in between them and the air fry basket when I use it, and that has helped somewhat. My manual says not to use soap on the elements but does not specify if that also applies to the metal protectors. I don't use soap just to be safe, but it definitely makes cleaning it more difficult!
