I have had the problem you have: massively overweight, couldn´t keep a workout routine going, maybe due to my adhd, who knows. the only thing I changed was this: I stopped fueling my body with trash. I cut out all high processed foods and all added sugar, limited carbs a bit and raised healthy fats and protein. I limited calorie intake to a slight deficit whithout feeling hungry, the cravings went away after a few days. after a few weeks, I didn´t know where to go with my enegry and started working out. about 12 months later, I weigh 30kg less, build quite some muscle, can eat 2800 to 3000 calories a day without gaining weight, of course I sometimes eat sugar and unhealthy stuff again, cuz my body can take it now. about 1 hour of full body resistance training three times a week is all it takes, sometimes only twice if my body tells me that I need some extra rest-. maybe this helps, maybe you already eat healthy and you can´t do it for other reasons, in that case, ignore my text and I hope you find out how to overcome the problem.

Super great comment. I can see how trash food may be the root of some serious problems in my life, but reading your comment encourages me to remove it from my life. Thank you!

@@isaacw5845 start slowly! find healthy stuff that you really like! if your new diet requires constant willpower to maintain, it wont work. for me it was lots of chicken wings (not perfect, but high in protein), canned lentil stew and chili con carne, because im a lazy fuck... stuff like that, that has good macros. and for micros: salad with cheese, fruits. you know, whatever works for you. oh: if you eat lots of cheese, eat some peanuts or peanut butter for dessert, reduces the ldl cholesterol quite a bit. studies and my almost weekly blood tests (blood and plasma donor) confirm it works 😁

You need to stop eating carbs, i.e. keto/carnivore diet, that will give you the most results. Working out will be just a cherry on top.

Honestly I am using the inability to sit still for a long time to move around a lot. I would practice martial arts again if anything was close by and affordable. But I always figured as long as I move a lot I don't need to remember to excercise. I think I walk at least an hour or two at once every day. Even on days I'm not hungry and forget to eat. But the autism that is the main driver of my brain does make it easier for me to create schedules, plans, calculations, etc. Only for me to ignore it as soon as I try to start following it for a while. I'll feel trapped in a routine, I want to rebel against myself, it is a struggle lol. What does help if you have siblings with young kids is go over there and start juggling the kids. Kids tend to be better able to keep up with moving a lot. Also more fun to play soccer or other sports with young kids since it isn't about winning at all it is about moving around and having fun. Actually at one point I was practicing jumping by jumping on rocks and then down. Then some young kdis thought that is fun I'll join you. Then some more joined, then I was unintenionally leading a sports class out of nowhere. And the young boys went "oh you're so strong. I'm gonna train as hard to be as tall and as strong as you" Can you imagine adults just doing this? Everybody seems to lose the playfullness when they hit 20. Makes me kinda sad. I'd still play hide and seek. Or tag. Maybe find a job with heavy physical labour, and just adjust your work diet to help you recuperate.

There's some awesome points you made. I totally relate to planning everything out in detail - and then ignoring that plan all together. I love how you bring back childlike playfulness. It's naturally fun to jump and skip - and you're totally right: Kid's just get it! 🫶

@@luftigfrei brains are fun huh. I can't beat myself I'm too strong. Thus I beat myself in manners I didn't intend to. Paradoxes galore. Honestly it is kinda funny.

I've started going to a small class-based gym. I made a point to get to know the receptionist and coaches. That way, I can schedule a class, which sets up a reminder half an hour before so I know it's time to go, and I know there are people looking forward to seeing me there. It helps motivate me to get up and go. Plus, the workouts are short, so I can go on my lunch break or after dinner. There are multiple sessions I can make it to if I forget to schedule something at my normal time, and I've even got someone who will give me a call if they haven't seen me in a few days and get me scheduled for something once I'm available. It's been a major help, and I feel in shape for the first time in years

i have never had a problem with excerise, its the one place my mind is over working. Team based or class based is the way. I grapple, wrestle climb. Pick something that isnt boring.

Except for "schedule backup workouts," I've heard all of these points before as advice and I love how everything you said here mirrors my feelings. The letter tip in particular. I actually laughed out loud at 1:57. So relatable. Bonus tip: "just focus more [on exercising and less on other stuff]." If only it were that easy. You nailed it at the end. Nike's tagline doesn't work for us.

I do like the letter one, I did that with motivating myself to study. I think it helped me once. It may be helpful for me to revisit, but I just haven’t revisited it yet. I quite like journalling but it’s also a habit I’ve fallen out of in the time being. Unrelated to working out, just thought I’d comment ^^

Oof, the inner saboteur has been kicking me over these past few weeks regarding academic work. I’m hoping to get CBT soon to help combat it.

Thanks for commenting 😉 I journal on and off - lucky with journalling, the world will go on turning if I forget about it for a while. With academics, it's hard. Wishing you all the best! 🫶
