Lots of comments on his mid-range, velocity, tuning, compression, and low-fi sound, but another thing I noticed is that he can play really fast 🙂
@GameOfThePlanets
Ай бұрын
Work. Power over time. Velocity is too simplistic. He sounds clear and articulate because he's a powerful drummer IRL and can produce that power consistently over a long period of time. I bet Louis Cole sounds just as good practicing on pillows as he does on a drum set. It's not velocity. It's work. It isn't enough to "play a Louis Cole beat." It's playing a Louis Cole set. Play what he can play for hours. Exhaust yourself. Work. And vary your work. Exercise. Pick up a barbell. Do endurance training. Become an athlete. Ride a bicycle 50+ miles. Whatever it is, do something until it exhausts you. And then pick it up and do it again for longer. If you want Louis Cole tier status, do Louis Cole tier work. There's no faking it. Homeboy is a tank.

I'm thinking that compression plays a role - and with JD Beck's sound, too. The ghost notes really stand out even though they are low height. Louis' kick notes are super consistent volume-wise, too, even quick doubles.

The treatment of his drums plays a massive role in his overall sound. His placement of splash cymbals on top of drums and the use of cheaper dynamic mics, make for a lo-fi, staccato, synthetic like sound. It is mostly all attack.
@tonedowne
Ай бұрын
Velocity! He has a middling dynamic range that allows his drums to absolutely thump. He doesn’t go particularly quiet and he doesn’t do any really loud hits. So he hits hard enough for the drums to resonate but not so hard that he needs a lot of headroom on the preamps.
@LuxLucidOfficial
Ай бұрын
Well he also compresses the bejeezus out of them too, so all hits will "hit" regardless of velocity.
@tonedowne
Ай бұрын
@@LuxLucidOfficial This is true, but heavy compression can choke the tone completely if you chuck some big hits in. It’s like the When the levee breaks, drum sound. Yes the compression and slap back makes it what it is, but he also played it in a controlled way to make sure it would work.
@LuxLucidOfficial

@@tonedowne For sure, he definitely has crazy control. I always thought it was coupled with a smacked compressor though. I'm sure the kit is super tight already, tho, but it was always my assumption

I'd add "hyperpop" (or whatever the kids are calling it these days) as a major part of the whole thing. There's a specific transient to his sound that makes it instantly identifiable and honestly really difficult to replicate acoustically. It's almost a "hyper" version of Mark Guiliana's attack/tone, which of course is an extension of Jojo Mayer and Deantoni Parks' sounds...(which is of course the whole drum n bass thing). Some of it is the head treatment for sure, but it's this commitment to an almost quantized leveling of velocities and dynamics that makes for an almost "programmed" sound but still retains some human element. I don't think you can understand Louis Cole without at least as an extension of Jojo/Deantoni and other drummers imitating and continually responding to the evolution electronic music

I remember playing breaks at local jam nights and 50% of the other musicians going nuts and the other half genuinely not understanding what was going on. Fast foward to the iconic Louis Cole Plays DnB video, which also blew my mind as he was doing stuff I'd never even considered (the 16th notes split between pedalled hats and his left hand while appearing to hand total freedom of phrasing with his other limbs amazing).

The Spivak technique looks to me a lot like holding a sword. I've done kendo and a little bit of fencing, and you hold the sword in line with your forearm for much greater reach and manoeuvrability. It's also the proper way to hold a tennis racquet. Holding things that way gives you more power from your wrists and also better control over how much power you wish to use.

About that "keyboard sound"-this sound doesn't come from any particular keyboard or synthesizer. The keyboards you mentioned likely didn't even make those sounds, and the M-Audio doesn't make sound at all. They're controlling his computer with MIDI, and it's hard to say what software he's using (probably Massive by Native Instruments?), but hundreds of synths could have made them! How you program a synth is more important than the synth itself. On that topic, each sound is within the general category of "supersaw," sounds made of a bunch of slightly detuned saw waves, not just one patch. While this isn't an uncommon synth patch, I think it specifically came from dubstep. For a while, Louis Cole seemed pretty into dubstep, which you can hear all over the album Life, and in the style he was pulling from ("brostep," think Skrillex), supersaws are really common for background chords or for big drops, since they sound so full. While he's lost a lot of the dubstep influence, the supersaws remain.
@wietzejohanneskrikke1910
Ай бұрын
Exactly. He uses midi controller keyboards to trigger whatever synth plugins he has on his computer. Jacob Mann, a keyboard player he works with a lot, seems to favor a Roland Juno 106 and his sounds are usually pretty basic. Just sawtooth and maybe some on-board chorus, but that's it. On the album Life I hear a greater variety of sounds. Epic string pads probably through a Valhalla Supermassive (my guess) reverb for example. I also hear a lot of sample manipulation and sound design. There's definitely a dubstep and drum n bass influence, but also a lot of nifty classical and jazz arrangement techniques applied to his electronic music production.
@wietzejohanneskrikke1910

The supersaw was first introduced on the Roland jp8000 i think. Because it was such a radical sound, you suddenly heard it everywhere, especially in EDM.
