I've been ripped off by multiple dentists. They literally invent things to do in your mouth, especially if your insurance doesn't require pre-approval. Don't be afraid to get 2nd opinions. I once had a dentist tell me I needed 6 fillings and 4 crowns replaced and I went and to get another opinion and the new guy told me my teeth were perfect. I haven't had a cavity in 20 years. Exactly same happened to me. Everytime I went to a new dentist nearly all of them changed my fillings. Now I know continuous drilling and fillings are slowly killing the teeth. The last straw came when I moved again for jobs and the new dentist wanted change all my fillings which were replaced only few months before! I told myself that was it. This happened 8 years ago. I haven't been at a dentist since. My teeth are ok, they are not perfect, since they were drilled so many times, but I haven't had real toothache.

Some of these can apply to doctors in general. Rule of thumb: always get a second opinion. In fact, my best doctors actually encourage second opinions. Another note: a doctor who is "shoot first" with procedures, such as wanting to do a spinal disc removal the moment there's any herniation. A good doctor would see it best to avoid surgery at all costs, and only operate if it's absolutely necessary.

I would agree that there are some dentist who are in it for the money.... i hate to disagree with replacing old amalgam fillings i usually advice replacement when i see shrinkage and expansion... this happens to amalgam fillings since it is metal. Also Porcelain Veneers can be really expensive but when you want a whiter teeth they would be recommended because they will not stain and they will retain their color longer rather than buying any whitening products... which btw is not recommended for smokers and people who consume food and drinks with color ex. Coffee tea spaghetti etc. Why? Because they will stain your teeth again thus you would have to repeat whitening.... over and over. Also night grinding is a big problem, your teeth gets abraded really bad, some patient have tooth abrasion up to half of the crown and this will cause pain or sensitivity because dentin or pulp might get exposed, and vertically your face gets shorter this will be a big problem for your TMJ, this will be a really lengthy discussion though but mouthguards are important basically it does not stop grinding but it will prevent the upper teeth and the lower teeth from coming into contact thus you grind but you do not harm the tooth no abrasion no problem, all material that is put on your oral cavity is safe and personalized.... it is just for you, you cant make other people wear it, thus it will really be pricey. My tip would be make sure that the location of the clinic does not have expensive overheads... like high rent or taxes because they might be a little more expensive that those who have a private set up in communities. I agree with the marketing strategy though, because they need to get back the money they spent for advertising not to mention it is really unethical.

That is a good reason to get a night guard, otherwise I'll have no teeth left by the time I'm 40. By all means, if you think your dentist might be ripping you off, get a second opinion, but if 2 or 3 different dentists have told you that you need a night guard, and you're not old enough to consider dentures in the next decade, you probably need a night guard.

It's because they have so much more dental school debt than they used to. And the people who have the most cavities also have the least money, while people who can pay for treatments have few real cavities thanks to fluoridated water and good oral hygiene. So dentists sell rich people treatments they don't actually need, like veneers, bleaching, replacing silver fillings, non-existent cavities, aggressively treating small cavities, etc.

This being said, it was very eye opening to see how dentists can go about in tricking people into having to spend more money for work that is not needed. It is true that the patient versus doctor relationships are very important. One should be able to fully accept what their doctor has in mind when treating them. The dentist office is supposed to be a place of trust. After seeing this video, everyone needs to be aware of some of these cases and take a stand against those taking advantage of them.

In the old days, my dental fillings remained intact for decades. But my last filling fell out in just a couple of weeks. Then it was refilled and that fell out as well. All this while the dentist was doing things like making a fuss about having to fly over to France to attend a wedding. Always making it damn clear that she had lots of money and the freedom to do whatever she wants. Another sick dentist, while cleaning my teeth, started asking me, "Does it hurt". At the time it did not. What she was doing while using a dental tool was scribing across some of my teeth just below the gum line. Years later, after my gum line had receded a bit, the scribed indentations were now visible. When my toothbrush moved across these sharp indentations, the nerve screamed out big time. So I just kept this up for many months until the fluoride in the tooth paste filled the indentation enough to stop the nerve from being exposed. All of my teeth are somewhat compressing against each other, and so much so that one of the upper teeth eventually pushed outward at an angle. On the lower teeth, one tooth did a 45 degree rotation due to the pressure from both sides. As you can guess, I never did have any gaps between any of my teeth. But once again I was back to see a dentist to clean my teeth. This time this particular dentist used her tools to clean between the teeth a heck of a lot. Once back home I was shocked to see that for the first time in my life I now had gaps between my teeth. Not only did she remove plaque and/or tartar, but she removed enamel as well ! After that, I now ended up with tea stains on the edges of my teeth since the edges no longer had enamel protection. These were 3 different dentists, 3 horrible dentists.

Now few days after I started having weird pain and another dentist in the same office told me I need a root canal. I went to another 2 dentist and they both confirmed that. Morover the 3rd told I need two root canals ! He doesn’t want to replace the filling on another tooth that is mext to the one that Inhad pain. I feel the tooth and when I press on it it doesn’t hurt any more. It’s weird because the XRays that nobody wanted me to have on hands are not really showing that famous huge black spot of infection/inflamation. It's kind of a crazy thing to know that people are being ripped off from their family dentist. Your dentist is someone that you should be able to rust like other health care professionals. The patient-doctor relationship is established when a dentist starts to care for a patient. That's kind of funny to know that a dentist uses fluoride toothpaste to rip people out of more money. My Dad recently started using fluoride toothpaste. I had noticed the change in the toothpaste he uses, and asked him why he'd changed from the toothpaste he normally uses. He told me his dentist recommended that he use fluoride toothpaste.

If you’re new to an area and don’t have friends to ask, just go to a dental school for diagnosis and get a treatment plan. Then take that plan and get a comprehensive eval by a private dentist and see the difference. At the same time if you don’t prioritize your dental health and are driven by insurance, plan on encountering differences in treatment plans because insurance doesn’t care about you, they just want to cover the cheapest treatment for you, which usually isn’t the best.

I also mentioned that I would like to have bonding done on my bottom teeth to close the gaps. The dentist who made the dentures did the bonding and did a wonderful job. Once he finished, He told me to go to the front desk before leaving. The receptionist said I needed to pay $700.00 dollars. I said can I pay half now and they bill me the rest. Oh I forgot to mention I had very good dental insurances from 2 different companies and they had already started bill. They said I had to pay the whole amount. I paid it. A week later, I received an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) from my insurance showing they had already paid $2,800. The bonding that I received was paid by my insurance on the same day of the procedure. I called my insurance and they said I needed to call them and demand my $700.00 back because they had already paid them. I was so angry. They immediately sent me a reimbursement for $700.00 dollars.

As a dentist I agree with most of these, big exception is the prescription toothpaste, small exception is the nightguard. I don't know a single dentist who makes a profit off of toothpaste or electric toothbrushes etc., it's against our code of ethics and I doubt even the scummiest dentist would do it. All those products we sell at cost which is usually less than stores. High fluoride toothpaste doesn't need a prescription in Ontario at least, and I do strongly recommend it to high caries risk patients, and sometimes I use it myself even though im 33 and have never had a cavity in my life. As for nightguards they can easily be overprescribed and it will be difficult to know if your dentist is doing that, but there's no question they can protect your teeth. If you are pretty sure you have a lot of tooth wear compared to other people your age, if you have a lot of expensive veneer, crown, bridge or implant work they will protect your teeth at night if you are grinding. The only problem is the dentist can't exactly say you are grinding at night firsthand, so it's an educated guess. The jury is still out on whether they help with TMJ dysfunction but they may be worth trying if other methods haven't worked. Couldn't agree more with the silver filling point though. Amalgam restorations usually last 3-4x as long as white fillings, especially in high caries risk patients. Once the filling is set they leach negligible mercury, but drilling them out to replace them will release mercury vapor so best leave them be unless there is decay or the tooth or filling is breaking or at a high risk of breaking. Don't get them replaced because they are "old" or "leaky".

@@duhsunnyday8590 I know some electric toothbrushes that cost $100 from the manufacturer so sell for $100 at no profit to the dentist, not sure about $150 and it does seems high. You would have to get the model and see what it retails for, they should be selling it below retail otherwise they are making a profit. A lot of the high end ones connect to smartphones and have pressure sensors and even seperate clocks they connect to, so it is not impossible. It's not illegal to make a profit off of toothbrushes, but it's unethical as dentists are supposed to sell their services only, not goods.

Hey! I am about to graduate dental hygiene school in just a few weeks, so I have years of experience in the dental field. I just wanted to let you know that many dental professionals recommend these because mouth guards made specifically in a dental office perfectly fit your teeth. Everyone's mouth in unique in terms of shape, size, anatomy, alignment, and bite. With sports mouth guards getting one at a dental office is recommended because they fit to that, while one bought at the store (even if you boil it to fit better) does not fit well enough to completely protect your entire mouth! It is kind of like getting glasses at an optometrist (eye doctor) or just getting glasses at the dollar store. My professional opinion is that for your safety, that when playing sports it is best for a custom one because it significantly reduces the chance of severe injury to your mouth that often comes with sports. However, I would understand if you do not have access or finances for this. It is your decision! Just wanted you to keep that in mind and not think dental offices are trying to rip you off just because they want to keep you safe and healthy! Best of luck :)

I was waiting for a lot more mentions... such as: 1. Insisting that root canal can't be done in one session... Or two... And take months to complete standard procedure, such as filling or root canal. 2. Pulling several teeth instead of attempting to save the tooth [especially molars] And then telling patient that they need partial denture but won't give referral or another course of treatment.... 😶 True story. 17 years later, have had all teeth remnants extracted with an immediate denture. Not gonna lie as a dental assistant patients would come in and need NO treatment and the doctor would randomly tell me to treatment plan a night guard. It was soo annoying because half the time the patient didn't need or they could have suggested the OTC nightguards at drug stores. There are times when patients come in and DO need them but if you come in and need no work done aside from a cleaning and your dentist recommends a night guard run. Also if you have missing teeth and they immediately discuss implants(bridge or single units) with you as the ONLY treatment option RUN.

Some generally good guidelines, but to say nightguards are useless is a rather broad and inaccurate statement, especially without facts to back it. Human jaw can develop hundreds of pounds of pressure, and bruxism (grinding) can not only wear down chewing surfaces, stress ligaments that hold teeth in place, but can also remove enamel and /or fracture a tooth, resulting in much more costly repairs. Dentist-fitted one will not be spit out or swallowed while sleeping, either.

Lengthy exam, told I may lose many other teeth that are giving no problems, periodontal specialist appmt set up, he measures (but I cannot possibly verify) gum "pockets", says US$1,065 deep cleaning needed. At this moment, I have 3 further apptmts, and nothing yet done for my original two reasons for first visit. My gums, BTW, are nicely pink, no pain, no redness, no puffiness, no bleeding ever. They look fine to me, but what do I know?
@toothrestorer6588

@ Lance Baker. Actually you could easily verify that the pockets by having the dentist show you with a mirror how deep he is probing. Any honest dentist would be glad to show you. Cleaning lady tells me she is concerned about one of my back teeth so she calls in the head dentist. Head dentist comes in and within 15 seconds of looking inside my mouth, she tells me a 3-side Onlay is needed for that tooth. Comes back a few minutes later with a cost plan..... $650 after insurance. Also tells me she can do it right now and be done within an hour and half. Told her I need to schedule because I'm not in the mood today to get novacaned up and have you drill into my tooth. The next week I went to 2 different dentists for opinion and both said onlay not needed for that tooth.

I prescribe prescription toothpaste to most of my patients and it’s not because it’s a markup item. It is because they have a decay problem in a town with no added fluoride in the water and they don’t want to give up their marijuana and daily coffee. Night guards are also very important but I recommend trying the Dentek brand from the pharmacy. It’s only about $20. Most people clench their teeth at night which puts 200,000 times more force on the teeth then they are designed to take! Don’t worry people most dentists are concerned with your best interest. I got into dentistry because I though they were all a bunch of con artists and I wanted to change the profession, but I found out I was wrong and I have found very few dentists are unethical. I think 4 in my town are out of about 700. Contact me if you want help making a more updated video about the truth of dentistry.

Needless to say I refused to pay they called me within 40 minutes of leaving the dental office and formally apologized for trying to in essence double charge me...bottom line, stand your ground if you feel something is nefarious about your situation, worst part is I've been a customer of there's for over a decade my job doesn't have dental coverage so I've been paying cash all this time...they should have just done the right thing and not tried to recharge me, soo not sure if I give them a second chance or just find a new dentist in the future...

Your info on topical fluoride is either wrong or outdated. There are official dental guidelines that specifically REQUIRE the use of fluoride gels and such, but the patient needs to have at least 2 cavitated areas of decay for this to be implemented. Look it up, they are called the CAMBRA rules. A lot depends on the patient demographic also, in areas with low dental IQ and high dental caries rates, it may be used more generously. Also the fluoride gel will usually be used in conjunction with another pharmacy product, an antimicrobial mouthrinse. Whether the office sells the product or writes a prescription for them, however may be telling, as it is certainly possible a dental office may have a conflict of interest if they sell the product they are prescribing. If they prescribe the product rather than sell it, then it's more likely to be a valid recommendation. Also most caries are symptomless when in the stage that is most easily treated. The wording of your video that suggests to wait until something hurts is both incorrect and potentially harmful. Often waiting until something hurts signifies a progression to necrosis and a root canal....which will likely cost the person an additional $2000 to $5000. Waiting "until something hurts" could even lead to a person's death: read the many news articles regarding, "Truck Driver Dies After Being Hospitalized For Tooth Infection"

Some good percentage of my patients don't actually have symptoms when they walk - in. That doesn't mean they don't have some significant problems .. I always explain the issue to the patient be it recurrent decay around there existing crowns, failiure of there root canaled teeth or some cavity that's definitly there but not causing trouble at the moment ! Me finding these issues is NOT RIPPING OFF THE PATIENT ! Some patients refuse doing anything unless it is killing them which makes the procedure waaay more difficult.
