I have unrealistic ambitions because I also live in a egotistical society with lots of competition. There's noway I can live without any sort of ego when this toxic society itself is in constant urge to deem my self into a box. Yet I feel empathy for my fellow humans even tho if they don't agree with me. Deep down I also know we're all the same, no one is superior when in nature we're all the same having a massive ego. There's no specialty. And I definitely know I'm not always right cause sometimes I've some sorta self hatred. I think I am some kind of egotistical towards other toxic egoists. As if I'm trying defeat the monster by being an even superior monster myself while being right. So I try to set the bar high of my sense of empathy towards my fellow humans to reduce the sense of ego. I then feel sorry for them for being soo wrong of petting such toxicity in their hearts.

This video really hit close to home. I struggle a lot with ego. The reason is because I use ego (or maybe ego uses me idk) to make myself feel better and to hide my insecurities. It's cowardly, and I know it. I really want to be able to love myself fully and stop hiding behind ego.

Self confidence does not equal having a large ego, just like they said in the video. I have a poor opinion of myself and I ended up falling into most of the traits stated in the video (for example, I have trouble accepting my achievements and I always want to do better/more, I have extremely high expectations for myself and I set unrealistic goals for myself.) Reflecting upon this, I think these factors can sometimes feed into a low self-esteem depending on the circumstances.

Just a small correction, "Ego" actually does not translate to "I" or "me" in Latin; it only translates to "I." Latin absolutely loves changing words/endings of words depending on what part of the sentence they are, and I/me is no exception. Actually, it changes just the same way in English (though in English, most nouns don't do this and in Latin all do); when the speaker is the subject of the sentence (I see, I go, etc.), we use "I", and in Latin, we use "Ego" (Ego video, Ego eo, etc.). When the speaker is the subject of the sentence, in English we use "me" (They see me, They go to me, etc.) and in Latin, we use "me" (Me vident, Ad me eunt, etc.). Not that this matters at all, but I felt like commenting it just for fun, because I'm a nerd who thinks this stuff is interesting, and I thought maybe someone else would too. Valete! < 3

To anyone who watches this video from now on I hope you see this. The problem isn't your ego, its your lack of it. Its not a good thought process to simply try to become the best, instead crush those who stand in your way, (those that are worse at what you do than you are). Now put yourself in an environment where there are other people with this big ego, then crush them, now you are the best no questions asked. At first you need to think you are the best, then you need to prove it. My soul is awake, I no longer waver, because I know no one can compare to me.

I used to be like that but one person in particular changed my perspective. You don't always have to be right, you don't always have to feel frustrated about someone else. Other people have other opinions than you and that's going to change. Now, about the one that says "you want to bebetter than anyone else, you deserve the same or even more than others", to me this might have been a problem I had as a kid. See, my parents, especially my mom, loved comparing me to my brother or even other kids my age. And yeah...self-confidence drops. Bullying was another aspect. Not having a social circle was also one. I believe that your ego develops with how you were growing up, how the nature you lived in affected you. I still do feel like I can be better but I have said to myself that I'm not gonna become the best at something, because someone out there is better than me at that something.

I have all those signs in different ways 1. I always want to be right, but only on subjects i have some knowledge on. And if it happens i have, i'll never admit i'm wrong unless proved otherwise. First because i'm almost everytime right and because i have strong arguments. Sometime i realize aftermath i was saying shit but for some reasons i still always believe i'm right even if i'm wrong some times. 2. I don't always want more, i really don't care about being famous or rich. But i do want more skills in drawing or editing, i still want more time to do what i want. Except for that i live only in my house and don't want leave it so 3. It's also depending on what, for school or things like that i don't need to do efforts and i don't care so it's not one of my goals to be good at it since that's already the case (i sound very narcissic sorry 😭) 4. That's depending but at least in drawing that's totally right. I already did drawings contest and never won, always was crying in my room and was disappointed. I didn't want the prize, i just wanted to win and i still do. I just want to be the best no matter the reward. Recently i've seen a 1 year younger person that was drawing a bit better than me (from my pov) and i broke down. I cried in my bed cause i still didn't found my art style after a whole life of drawing, recently what i draw is shit and i never get satisfied. Never. All my drawings are 1d lifeless shits no matter how i try, i don't even have ideas so even if i try i don't know how to be creative. 5. Yes, and idk why. I don't think it's because of my ego cause this was years ago, before all my depressed and paranoiac phase. I always had a problem with people. I can't get attached to them, only fictionnals characters (but that's another thing). This was like that since middle elementary school, at least that's when i noticed it. A lot of my friends moved to other places but nothing, i really didn't care. My brother almost lost 2 fingers, he wasn't panicked but tbh i didn't felt anything. I was just giving him some things to help while eating. My grandpa died in janurary this year, i didn't knew him at all but saw him a lot, nothing. I already saw my mother crying and dad too, nothing, my mom has cancer yet i don't worry more than that. You could guess i feel really lonely. There's a lot reasons that makes me feel bad recently but this is since i was alive, before being depressed or anything. It was always there, i noticed it at least 4 years ago.

Too much or too less of of an ego are both destructive cases. As said, ego is just stating you as a person and what make you, you, apart from the collective -- it's not a bad thing and it's pretty essential for your ambitions to work towards in life. That could be used to help or inspire others your own way. Ego itself isn't the problem. It is when it's not balanced.

He's an insane narcissist with a slight ego, but he bends for me when I'm hurt. He recognizes he did something wrong and tries to learn from it. Honestly I'm lucky to have someone as amazing as him. Surprised I don't have any of these traits. Figured i'd have at least one. Closest I've gotten to this was when I looked down on my peers in highschool for being dumb. It was never in a "ha i'm so much better than everyone" kinda way though, more like "why are you all so fucking stupid?!". I'm the kinda person who believes failure means you just have more to learn about a subject. The more i succeed at something the sooner i lose interest. So when i stay up 'till 4am playing video games, sleep through school and refuse to do homework yet still end up at the top of my class it frustrated the hell out of me. Wasn't until i got into college and those same people i looked down on were now giving me competition that i finally started revising the way i looked at people. I was happy about it though, not discouraged or angry. That's why i wanted to become a teacher too. I want my students to be better than me. That shit gives me hope for the future.

I guess change the purpose of the goal you want to achieve. Example: if you want to get good grades in school do cause you want to get to know a subject well rather than proving that you are better than everyone else. Also try and accept your inadequacies so that you wont have to overcompensate in a panic that somebody will realise them. Hope it helps

Honestly just embrace the fact that there is always someone better, it DOESN'T take away anything from you as an individual. I have an ultra competitive mindset, but I realise life isn't a game and the best thing for me is to compete against myself and be the best I can be; relative to myself. If that makes sense?

What’s crazy is I’ve seen these traits in people in positions of leadership. It’s sad thinking back on how relationships have ended and it can all be prevented if we checked our egos. I would add people that need to be another persons saving grace.

Most people around me tell me that I demand too much from myself, and recently with therapy I've come to realize that I don't think it's ever enough. Weird to think it might boil down to ego since I've lost so much self esteem, but I guess those two are different. Self esteem is healthy, ego is only for appearances. I have a long way to go to change this.

So once you recognize you have these traits, what’s the best way to go about improving yourself with them?
@pauligrossinoz
Жыл бұрын
The trick is to accept that you _will_ make mistakes and are not perfect. That's just part of being human! An inflated ego is triggered whenever we see, or are forced to see, something we did wrong. The inflated ego recoils, and tries to make excuses to avoid the negative feeling that our self-image is flawed in any way, leading to narcissistic behaviour. But if you accept that mistakes are truly inevitable, _because you are only human,_ and integrate that acceptance into your self-image, then your ego won't recoil from the realisation that your self-image and reality don't match. Then it becomes easier to say you're sorry to those you hurt, because you know that making mistakes is just part of being you, and it's now also easier to focus to improving yourself. Think of yourself as a work-in-progress, and when the real world exposes yet another of your inevitable flaws, fix the damage (say you are sorry), but also feel grateful for yet another chance at self improvement. Now you know what you have to work on to be a better person tomorrow! Of course you will never be perfect, but you now accept this, and you are always trying to travel in the direction of self-improvement. Does that help? In any case, please have a wonderful day! 😊 👍

Honestly, I’ve noticed that many of my high school peers struggle especially with signs 2-5. I do think it’s really great seeing many young people striving to do the absolute best they can in school, but it’s best to do so to actually learn and grow as a student and human being rather than to use academic success just to impress teachers, peers, college admissions officers, etc.

Spirituality and a firm sense of Identity. Your true identity is based off of morals and values you treasure. Some of mine are: responsibility for my actions; ownership of my wrong doings; understanding that intent, my emotional reactions, and others actions in the past are no excuse for my own actions. If your narrative or life story is about all of the pain and suffering you have endured--> trash it. Your identity is about who you are in relation to others, so it shouldn't sound like a children's fairy tale. Don't tell the sob story to others and build rapport like a normal person. Thinking you are superior to others might sound like "nobody could ever understand what ive been through" so look out for that as well. Your identity is then comprised of your spirituality, beliefs, values, interests, hopes, dreams, the character flaws that you are working on (which includes narcissism), and the drive to take responsibility for every rude thing you say, do, and hint at.
@doomgod314

@Julia Vee I don't believe no one understands me. I believe that very few people care. I get your perspective, but I'm not currently subscribing to the notion that my "Identity is about who you are in relationship to others". I do what I do regardless of others. This year, I lost my only friend and both my parents. I'm not looking for new people in my life. I'm just looking for a perspective outside of society looking in. I can't help but acknowledge a feeling of distain for all people. I want every one to be happy, but I just want isolation lately. My love and I started a business and it would be helpful to find a way to handle people. I'll hopefully buy a sailboat by the end of the year and take a few months off a year just to myself.

I would love to hear the community's take on the difference between a person with an inflated ego and someone who is confident and opinionated. That is to say, a person who will state and defend their opinion with logic/research/etc. but will also admit when they are wrong vs. the type of person described in the video. Any ideas why they're perceived to be the same?
