Good information Austin. With 40+ years of welding experience I've tried all of theses methods with varying success. By far the best method that I have found is to straddle the gap with a VERY strong horseshoe magnet and weld between the magnet. I have encountered old line pipe on rehab projects that was almost un weldable do to magnitizem.

Used most of these methods over the years, but usually use the wrapping the ground around the pipe as a go to.

We had a job with my old company doing some metering stations. They’d never heard of magnetism in pipe, the quality director called it “hocus pocus” 🤣. They wouldn’t believe me and were firing welders because they couldn’t weld the pipe! Finally got them to buy an EWM degaussing machine, it took 20 minutes to set it up and completely demagnetize the joint. Some of the 48” you could stick a hammer on the side it was that bad.

You can also create a double ground that is open copper in the center. Ground to the open copper and put both ends of the double ground on either side of the joint. The double grounding kind of neutralized the magnetic lines of flux that causes severe arc blow.

The curie temperature for a low carbon steel is 770oC or 1390oF. When steel is heated above its curie temperature, it loses its magnetic properties. When it is cooled back down, it will go through a reverse transformation and will contain no residual magnetic field.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. In reversing the leads from your normal setup, you will be in straight polarity. This puts the stinger on the negative and the ground to be positive.

I was welding on a semi truck frame a month or so ago that was magnetized. I’ve never run into that before on a truck at first I didn’t understand why it wouldn’t weld right but then thought that may be the issue I ran 7018 on a/c uphill it still looked like hell but did the job it was for the icc bar so I still bolted brackets from the frame to the bar because I didn’t trust the weld

So I should run reverse? Or reverse straight polarity. That I may be running ? If I'm Low/Hy I'm running reverse anyway , plus I'm back stepping. Using heat your damn near critical to get rid of Old man Arc blow lol. But I do like to clamp inline to the joint. Sometimes that's helpful

If you heat the pipe(or other workpiece made of steel) beyond the point of change of ferrite to austenite structure which is around 900°C(if you look very closely it changes the shadowy looking shade ,if you did it before you will know), then the magnatization will go away . You do need to clean the mill scale off though . Do only if permitted by wps or engineers .

Having lots of experiance welding on equipment but not pipe. That some good advice about wraping cable around the pipe. One question? Why would your pipe be magnatized. Is this something that happens to the pipe due to fluids running through it or is that on purpose? Also if welding with A/C machine why would it matter which one is stinger or ground because it is A/C because your current is alternating. Thank you.
