@@apptreeline In general, when you have a pair of rhymed words in English, they're meant to mean that thing only when they're together in that context. Example. To hork means to vomit. To be borked means that something is broken (it arose from when people would type furiously, and mistype "borked" instead of "broke", I believe). Both are slang terms for the most part, and not something that you find frequently outside of native speakers. That said it's present in other languages too. The phenomenon is called "reduplication". Definitely look it up, as it's a fascinating subject. Horky-borky is reduplication: you take a word, find another word that sounds similar (frequently they rhyme), and smash them together to come up with a new meaning. For native speakers, it's fairly straightforward to understand, based on the context.

I noticed that the recurring problem in the cities that need fixing is that they have a big highway running through the middle and individual districts are islands with very few accesses. Pretty much all the bigger cities I've been to that work have wide circular bypasses on the outskirts and then smaller roads leading towards the center and level-crossing alleys all around the city.
@nanfredman1991

Good video biffa. Sometimes it may help to build collectors along highways, these are basicly smaller paralel highways with lower speed made or alot of on and offramps. At the end of the collector you build a single onramp to the main highway to let it all merge on to the highway. the general highway wont have to deal with so many lane switching of the local traffic wanting to go on and off.

Fun video, as always! So much of the cross-district roads in this city have to share a road with highway access ramps. That's a recipe for road-cramp. I've had much success with creating non-highway arterial (6-lane) roads connecting to highways, with limited access, generally, at a roundabout that connects a 4-lane boulevard which in turn defines the edges or a district or neighborhood. Residential districts have very limited entrances and are generally a system of cul-de-sacs rather than a grid system. Commercial areas, close to residential areas, have through access but are always closest to the arteries. Industry areas are usually off by themselves, with fairly direct access to highways and other transport and never through commercial or residential areas. The rest, Biffa has shown us.

Okay, I have been watching a few of these videos today. But I probably forgot half of the rules. 1. Roundabouts to make the traffic run smoothly instead of waiting for stoplights. 2. Roundabouts having the right of way inside, but let all roads into them give right of way. That way the traffic inside of them will run off and make room for new cars. 3. Lane mathematics. 4 lanes go into 4 lanes instead of 4 lanes going into 3 lanes for example. Makes the cars pick a lane. 4. Lane switching not allowed in traffic jam places. Only allow lane switches that are conservative and make sense for where the cars are going. Make sure single highway lanes have a single lane all the way through with nothing stopping them. 5. Shorts small roads making people able to leave high traffic roads a bit early instead of getting into jammed places. 6. Delete bus stops that are just around a corner and block traffic. Make bus stops on smaller roads where they don't hold back traffic. 7. Place high traffic buildings like garbage collecting places at smaller roads and not next to highways or big roundabouts. As there will be a traffic jam up to them. You can make long narrow roads in a single direction like a roundabout going into these corporations just to let the trucks drive there in a long line instead of creating a line inside a city. 8. Roads round a town can be 1 direction and have the right of way. That way the cars driving into town will not be blocked by anything. And the roads inside of the town can often be one direction to not block traffic every 50 meters on the big road. 9. Making roads single direction can be something that makes the traffic flow and also make room for the jam to get unstuck. A roundabout or something else can make the cars get back on track. 10. Public transportation is essential to remove some cars. But yet again the stops should not be right next to high traffic roads. The metros should be circles with easy connections. 11. People should be able to walk everywhere to avoid having them take cars. But often sidewalks can go over roads so that stoplights can be avoided. Stoplights are pretty bad overall.

Compare the screens at 14:20 and 14:30. timed traffic lights work really well btw in areas where there is not enough space for a roundabout or very wide roads. i usually set 5-15sec completely green on each direction with all the pedestrians on red, then 3-5 sec pedestrian all directions green., if cars go equally in all directions on the junction. if most go straight on the mainroad, its a little more complicated, but that first one still works fine.

21:23 What I like to do here is bring the slip lane to 2 lanes at the end, and then I up the roundabout lanes to 4 and do two left lanes straight on, and the two right lanes are turn off- if you're in the right lane, it's dedicated turn lane for those coming off the highway, and the second from the right lane is for people on the roundabout to turn off... Then, the second lane in the slip lane I use for getting onto the roundabout. It helps splitting the turning traffic with the roundabout traffic :D

I don't have the time to do it personally, but I would love to see a city that has 2+ completely separated road networks. One for the citizens, and the other for industry vehicles, etc. That would keep all the trucks and maintenance vehicles off the pedestrian roads (until they get merged back together going out of the city at least) and keep traffic more predictable/manageable by the player. Having 6 or 8 lane roads would actually make sense if it means having dedicated citizen/emergency lanes and industry/maintenance lanes per side on a 2-way road. Junctions might get a little more complicated, but having alternating lanes would justify a multi-lane off/on ramp (lane mathematics still works here, but you would subtract/add the amount of lanes proportional to each specified vehicle type; for ex, a 6 lane highway could have a 2-lane off ramp then turn into a 4 lane highway, and it would function identically to a 3 lane highway with a single off ramp turning into 2 lanes for two different vehicle types simultaneously). Fatter roads does equal more traffic bandwidth after all, but the game's mechanics makes it require a bit of extra effort to work the way it is intended. You could circumvent the issue of having dedicated lanes on a single road by running two or more roads with fewer lanes in parallel, but that would create a problem with common intersections and junctions being too large and/or complex for practical purposes. Edit: I got the idea from the warehouse I work in, where the aisles alternate between forklift aisles and order filling aisles: forklifts bring product in and order fillers take product out, all without getting in each other's way. It's a sure way of doing it, but it would require a lot of pre-designing of a city to actually work. It would be impossible to convert a city to using this kind of traffic filtering without basically having to re-do the city from scratch.

Of course proper building starts with building sensible roads)

Nice timelapses of the working junctions and the cinemativs with the before/after cuts are nice too, Biffa. nice touch. anyone else here thinking some of these citys were purposly build to have terrible traffic? :D I take WEEKS to get my city above 30k people because I literaly think like 20min before I put in a new junction or something like that xD

There was a video about it from other YT creator but I'm sure Biffa ain't doing it. If you see some of the roads are not well designed or not properly managed. I've learned a lot from Biffa's videos about traffic management but I still don't use TPME. All vanilla with 80% traffic but not well designed just bigger spacious roads. :)

Embrace the diamond interchange. When there's more traffic coming from the highway onto the bridge than the surface-street traffic merely crossing the bridge, a diverging diamond interchange is more efficient.

Roundabout at 21:36 should maybe be an oval about to replace the small roundabout on the left and to get rid of the small section of road on the right side.

If your video editing software can do it, when you flash between the old and fixed versions it'd be good to put a color filter of some kind on the old version. I know the visual difference between the old and the new versions is already somewhat striking, but any tiny thing you can do in a film-language way to convey "This is the old bad version" helps and makes it more clear. You could put on a vignette, a film filter, grey-scale or just desaturate it and it would convey that message even more so.

These are really fascinating videos... even for those of us who don't have time to play the game. With a little bit of tweaking... I mean... lane mathematics the cars start to flow. If that doesn't work, nuke it and stick a roundabout in. It's almost hypnotic when it gets unclogged. I have a question and two suggestions: Do you know why people seem to like to put in those massive one-way systems? Or is it just that cities with them end up in your to-do list? Whenever I see a 6-lane one-way, I'm thinking that it would be better to replace all of those with equally wide two-way roads with buslanes (if such exist in the game...). I'm of the opinion (even though I don't know how you do theses fixed IRL, or how much time you spend on them) that you could save yourself some time and hairpulling, if the first thing you do is stick in the metro. You'll end up doing it anyways and it would take a massive amount of traffic off right in the beginning.

Another entertaining one Biffa. :) It occurred to me that you end up doing the same tweaks to your favorite junctions quite often. What do you think about loading them up in the asset editor and doing things like your lane mathematics and such so they're the way you like them? Could be its own episode of Biffa Traffic UniversiTEA. Your palette of go-to junctions and junction tweaks.

@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines -- Right you are, but if nearly every time you place them you're changing the road types of this section or that section, might as well do it once then re-save the asset. (Eg. Roundabouts to 3 lane highway with a sound barrier, reducing sections to 2 or 1 lanes, maybe even adding pedestrian overpasses/tunnels.)

Biffa, are the 5 lane highway and the 4 lane road in the workshop? I'd really like to have those 2 roads in my game too. Nice video by the way, it's great to see how Little changes can make the traffic a lot better. Metro FTW, no doubt about it. That part at 23:50 worries me a bit, it's just too busy but I guess the owner of the city can make a couple of extra roads to make it better.

Biffa one thing you should try is putting stop signs on highway ramps this will give cars time to merge without getting all choc o block this is similar to ramp metering which allows a traffic light on highway off ramps which uses sensors to find a gap in traffic to realese cars or timed feed which the stop signs will simulate

I loaded up Cities: Skylines yesterday, and didn't have any savegames, they're probably all on my old PC which isn't working at present, which is another story entirely. I'm after a few mods to drop into my Steam setup, already found TM:PE having that from the start of a new map will be a great help! I need a mod that does terrain adjustments easily and properly, also need the other mods Biffa recommends to use along with TM:PE. Please feel free to send me suggestions with mods for Cities: Skylines if they are what I need I might just make use of them! The default maps are okay but the coastlines on some of them are a bit rough!

Biffa, thanks for the videos man, made me go back to my city and try to fix everything. Have you been having trouble with TM:PE? I've been trying to restrict left turns in intersections (right hand traffic), without using lane to lane , but instead used lane arrow restrictions. Vehicle AI are still turning left, and when I tried connecting individual lanes, AI still did not stop turning. Anyone else having this issue? MOD has the latest update, rebuilt roads and intersections and still happens...

Can't help but wonder how one creates a 45,000 pop city with such insane traffic. Surely it is more work to make it this bad than it is to make a basically functional traffic system. I'm so-so at the game at best and I've never managed to make the traffic so bad.

Biffa, what do you think about nodal development in CS? Does it lend itself to heavy traffic or work to solve it? (Assuming each node is connected properly to all transit options...) BTW, where does the phrase "chocker block" come from? Asking for a friend who doesn't Google stuff. I'm my own best friend.
